oh woooow! Someone needs anger management ;)

Okay, so...I feel kinda bad for asking you about this, but I live about an hour away from an apple store and I'm not sure if I can really afford to take a special trip up just for this.

I accidentally dropped my macbook today (read: I was packing things up and I pulled at a cord that I didn't realize was underneath my computer and it came crashing down from desk height to the floor). The computer fell monitor side down, and now the optical drive is making funny noises. Not the regular noises it makes at start up; they're higher pitched and about four times longer in length. I'm not sure if I did damage to it or if I should not worry about it. I'm afraid to stick a CD into it for fear that I'll never get it out but don't know how else to test its working/not working capabilities.

I guess I just figured that you're the closest thing to a consultant I have without getting in my car and driving for an hour. Feel free to ignore this if it offends you, I just want to get my baby figured out if at all possible.

No, definitely ask away!

Unfortunately I have a feeling you damaged the optical drive. Is there any noticeable physical damage to the MacBook, I mean can you see any dents or scuffs? Try putting in a disk, if it doesn't go in then you can be pretty sure it might be okay, although even if it does get stuck in there you should be able to bring it to Apple (so long as there's no visible damage) and they'll probably replace the drive.

You should feel lucky to have an Apple store so close, I had to drive about 3 hours to get my iPhone replaced. Oh yes, and be glad your LCD display didn't crack, that's a $800 fix :(

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Oh geez. The only thing different past the funny noises is that when I move the screen it makes what can best be described as a squeaky hinge noise...minus the metallic squeak. And I disturbed some dust/stuff that had lodged itself between the screen and the casing (no idea how, though). No dents, no scuffs. Thank God.

I don't have insurance on it (augh, foolish me I know). I hope that replacing the drive (should it require it) doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm just afraid that the consultant will nail me to a cross for my poor treatment (some of the casing below the mousepad is gone and there are smudges and dust in the keys, etc) of my baby.

Ooh...if it were $800 to fix, I'd just say eff this and buy a new computer. At least I'd have all the new software and everything for only a little bit extra.

Thank you!

Hrmm yeah it's possible there's some case damage then too. They'll probably notice that right away. If you're in your warranty and they can't figure out that you dropped it then it'll be the free, but if you're out of warranty you're looking at $200+ dollars.

I've definitely seen the case chipping, if yours is the white one I know the white hand rests also turned yellow/brown which should be covered under warranty which is nice. Buy a $5.00 can of air to clean out that keyboard, well worth it!

At $800 I would just buy a new laptop too haha

I mean, if it doesn't go in, you can be pretty sure you've got a busted optical drive heh In which case, I would take the 1hr drive to Apple...so long as there's no visible damage to the unit. :)

oh oh oh oh oh it went in! I had to push it in almost all the way for it to realize it was there, but it took the CD! It made strange noises when i tilted it to check the sound quality of the speakers, but...it spit the CD out and everything too.

Phew! Okay...I think I can wait until Friday to go up to the store. My computer is still usable since I don't need to use the CD drive to function. I'm going up to Kansas City to celebrate my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary, so I'll be around there and can sneak away to have it looked at and taken care of then.

Oh excellent, never force it though, if it just won't go leave it haha Does it read CDs/DVD and such? Also try it with a CD you don't really care about just incase it scratches the hell out of it, wouldn't want to ruin a good CD ya know!

If everything else is okay then I'd say keep using while noting anything else that's wrong it, that happened, that way you're prepared.

I suggest hitting up the Apple website, and scheduling yourself a Genius Bar appointment, that way, you just show up when you appointment is and you're taken care of!

I got the computer in October of 06. I have no idea how long my warranty is for xDD

I do have the white one, but my spots are more gray than yellow/brown (at least I have that going for me, yeah?).

Well, I didn't force it, it slid in easily until it grabbed. It's just that it grabbed with maybe half an inch of the disk showing instead of half of the entire disk. It read the CD (one I burned), was trying to import it, and worked on random (I figured that was a little more abusive on it than just playing straight through). I'm afraid to stick a DVD in, though, because I'm kinda attached to all the ones I've got.

Probably a stupid question, but will the computer still work with casing damage? I've got the whole poor college student thing going for me.

Yeah, if you didn't get the AppleCare which you should almost always get with laptops, I say give the desktops a year, if nothing happens within the year then you probably don't need the AppleCare, but anyways, if you didn't it, you're definitely out of warranty.

If you don't have the brown/yellow spots, then yay, haha It's kinda gross...they definitely used the wrong plastics haha

Well if it played the CD on random I think it's doing well!!

It'll definitely work with case damage, it's usually just a cosmetics thing, at least as far as we know right now, it'll probably take Apple looking at it to know if there's something else going on inside...and hopefully in your case, it's okay in there!
