I have morals. I know they aren't what you wish they were, and no, I don't think sex is sacred, but you have to know you taught me well. All I want is for people to be happy and safe.

And Mum ... she was upset. [Admits.] I told her about what I wanted to do and she doesn't want me to, either. I don't know if it was a dream or if she really did talk to me, but I feel like I met her. I don't want to disappoint her, but I feel like if you and her were in the same position as me and Tobi, you'd want to do the same thing. Don't you want to hurt the people who killed her? Don't you want to stop them from doing bad things to anyone else?

[cuts in before that last sentence ends] -Don't you dare ever assume what I would have done if your mother were still here. You know absolutely nothing about what happened. Your silly dream- You've always acted as if you knew everything there was to know about life or about me. Truth be told boy-o you don't know the first thing about what made me who I am today.

I did this for a reason. Because not knowing that past is what kept you safe. That work is all for ruin now in't it, Naruto? Because you've gone and walked the same path as your mum did. Always... ['sticking her nose where it didn't belong' is what he wanted to say. but he pauses and loosens his grip that had grown considerably tight on the phone] ... You gain nothing from vengeance. If you start a battle it will end in war. Everyone who bothered to care for you will get hurt in the process. And you're more than willing to risk their lives for the greater good.

... If only I had known I was raising such a selfish son maybe I would have let a better family take you. They would have done so much better.

[Silent as Minato chews him out. Deflates a little, having been touched by his dream - but now wonders if it wasn't just a silly dream. Didn't know how Minato would react, but shouldn't be surprised - probably wouldn't think such a dream were real if he hadn't had it himself.]

Don't blame yourself. I'm old enough to take responsibility for my own actions. It's not you, it's me. I'm lucky and I'm grateful for what you've done. I don't feel like I'm throwing it all away. I feel like you taught me right, Dad. Everyone deserves happiness, and sometimes a person has got to take it upon themselves to sacrifice themselves for everyone else. That person might have a family; a dad who cares about them and wants them to live a quiet and safe life, but I'm sorry.

I want you to stay out of it. Take care of yourself. I'm not rushing into things, and I won't do anything until I'm confident it'll have an effect. I've got help. I know that doesn't make you feel better, but it isn't about how you've raised me. It's just who I am.

I was always some silly chap that spoke words far too advanced for his age and Kushina would be there to whap me a good one and go on about her way. Doing good or bad. No matter what the outcome it was her way and that was all that mattered...

This is all backwards. I'm your father. I should be risking my life for you and keeping you out of harms way. But what else can I expect out of my son? Except disobedience.

. . . [Stronger tone] I'm not allowing you to end your life so recklessly. You might have already decided your path. But I brought you into this awful world and I will be the only one to take you out of it. Do you understand me?

I think about her everyday. And wonder if what I've done with my life would come even the slightest bit close to acceptable if it were with her. Because your mother deserved the world, Naruto. She was a beautiful woman.

But I'll never be lost. I made my own life and path for myself. And for you. [Another pause.] However I like to think I'm strong enough to accept she is gone and preserve her memory then be weak and fight for something I cannot have.
