Another Night, Another Bottle
Sam Winchester knows, deep down, that he's better than this, better than letting himself drown in self-pity and a cheap bottle of whiskey, but he doesn't care right now. He doesn't care that his brother, Dean, would want him to find a way to move on with his life and get out from under the cloud hanging over him, but Sam doesn't care about that, either.

Dean is dead, and much of Sam's purpose in life went with him. Dean was the one who'd first gotten Sam into hunting, into this life of moving from place to place and helping where they could. He'd been happy in law school, leaving this all behind, before Dean came asking for his help. Every time Sam needed his brother, Dean was there to help, there to encourage him.

But when Dean needed him, Sam couldn't come through for his brother.

He takes another drink, letting the alcohol burn as it runs down his throat. The drinking dulls the pain somewhat, keeping his guilt from eating him alive completely...

...at least, until the whiskey runs out again.

"The options of you accessing your full power without it are extremely slim, Sam." Ruby said. "I can still show you how to use it, but there's only one way you'll be strong to do it, and that's drinking demon blood.

I'm not saying you have to go out and drain a new demon every night. I know your stance on not killing unless it's the only option. I'd allow you to drink my blood."

"I get what you're saying, Ruby, but on the surface of things, this really seems to benefit you." Sam says.

He wants to kill Lilith with all of his being, but this? Could he really go down this road? With her?

Then again, he'd been powerless to save Dean from Lilith. Would he have had this edge if he'd started sooner?

"I'll do this, but on my terms. We start slow and you help me look for other methods in the meantime, deal?" he asks.

	Sam just blinks at Ruby. "A demon with an addiction to french fries. I don't know if I should laugh or stare." he says, starting to chuckle. He pauses. "How are things with...your body? 	Sam's questions weren't random, but he was trying to gauge Ruby's feelings on something before he explored it further. There was a better than good chance that, if he killed Lilith, he wouldn't live to tell about it. But if he did... "Okay, cool. Thanks." he says, and goes back to his reading.
