Summary: Leon's having trouble sleeping, and when he steps out to try to get in some much needed conversation with Michi? Why he's attacked by some mysterious creature! A few spells, and a dash to Professor Simmons' door later, Leon's being ushered to the nurses office.
It was Thursday night, and the majority of the Sonnier dormitory was asleep. Sure, there were a few up and reading, or talking to friends, but it was late enough that there wasn’t a great group of people roaming the halls. Mostly, the only noises came from the owls up in their roost, and from the occasional television, computer or stereo. It was also late enough that most creatures outside had settled in for the night. All in all, it was fairly quiet in House Sonnier. For now. Leon was bored, but that wasn’t particularly new. He could already tell there was not going to be any chance of sleep, and leaving him anxious and frustrated on top of his already glum outlook. He’d scrolled through his phone a bit, before deciding he didn’t want to talk to anyone and picked up a book to read instead. Only that didn’t help him relax, nor did the music streaming out of his speakers...nor did being in that
room. Groaning he’d turned the light off, then flicked it back on a moment later as he couldn’t decide what to do. He tried laying down, but sat up moments later.
This wasn’t working. Being in that room wasn’t working. Fuck, being at
school wasn’t working. Every since he’d returned from holiday, everything had gone to hell in a hand basket. He had to tell Adelaide the truth, something AB and Gael wholly agreed on, but the more he thought about it, the longer he put off telling the truth. It would only hurt her, it wasn’t fair to her; one excuse after another popped up, each making it harder and harder to muddle his way to the inevitable. And with Jake Frost knowing the truth, and only Merlin knew how Jake figured it out, he imagined that it was only a matter of time.
“Fuck me,” he muttered to himself, pushing off the bed. Grabbing his phone and his hoodie, Leon did the one thing he thought wasn’t likely to happen of his own free will. He texted Michi-
Hey, can we talk? I need your help.He dropped his phone into his back pocket before pulling his hoodie on. Sighing, he slipped out of his room, patting his pants down to make sure he had his room key before letting the door click shut behind him. Walking down the hall, he stuffed his hands in his pockets, eyes on the floor as he tried to imagine how he’d explain the situation to Michi...without outing in the process.
From the ceiling, up by the stairwell, something stirred. It was large, and black, and quite hungry. Its last meal had been thwarted by other owls, and it hadn’t been able to hunt properly since then. It was agitated about being outside of its normal environment, and was quickly growing restless in its need to get something to eat.
Hearing noises coming toward it, the creature opened its beady black eyes. This thing coming toward it was large, but then so were some of the other things it had taken down in the past. It was also desperate enough to make the attempt. Silently, the cloak-like beast spread its membranous wings and descended from its space, mouth open and teeth bared. The thing made a desperate grab at Leon’s face with its mouth. Latching on to his cheek, the creature finally shrieked as it made to claw at the skin by Leon’s ears.Leon didn’t even notice when the creature moved, though he paused then the light in the hall seemed to change. That was weird, but maybe it was just the effects of little sleep. But he hadn’t taken two steps before something was biting into his cheek painfully. His eyes went wide, as he jerked back to no avail. He cried out, hands coming up to try to pry the biting, clawing beast from his face.
“
Temero!” He shouted, latching on to the last spell he’d been mulling over. He didn’t have the time, or the presence of mind really, to debate the merits of using dark arts against the howling beast. He wasn’t even sure what the spell did, really, save to desecrate the victims body with painful bruises and open wounds. He wasn’t even sure it it would work without a wand, for that matter.
It was expecting a meal, or even just a few bites before it needed to fly away. What it was not expecting was to be hurt by its prey like that. With another shriek, the bat-like creature removed its mouth from its intended prey and flapped its great wings to move away from what had caused it pain. Its eyes weren’t meant for this kind of environment, and it seemed to be out of its league with this target.
Its leathery body was now spotted with bruises, naked to the eye because of its naturally dark coloration. In its small brain it tried to weight the options of either attacking again, or just fleeing for good. It decided on the latter since the former had hurt too much for its liking. Shrieking once more, the creature turned around and made to go back the way it came - up the stairwell to the owlery and then out the window from there to retreat back to the forest.Leon stared at the creature as it fled, his chest heaving as he stood wide-eyed and uncertain. What the hell was that?! Shuddering he lurched forward, giving chase as blood rolled down the side of his face, dripping on the floor.
“Shit, shit...shit....” What the hell?! “I can’t....what...”
He picked up his pace to race after the creature, holding up his hand as if he could catch it before shouting “
petrificus totalus!”
Well this was not something the creature had forseen. One moment it was flapping its wings in an attempt at getting away from this meat-thing that had caused it pain. Then next moment it was falling to the floor, unable to even shriek its anguish and frustration. It fell face down on the floor with a soft thud, almost the sound of a leather jacket being tossed to the ground, and did not move any more. Leon fumbled as he followed the beast, blinking rapidly as he came up to it and stared. Just what
was that thing anyway? Kneeling down he reached out, rolling it over so that he could get a good visual of it. “What are you?”
He pushed its wings out wide as he took in as much of the sight before him as he could. This thing had just attacked him, and he was treating it like a science experiment. There was something fundamentally wrong with his reasoning, he realized. And yet, he didn’t want to
kill it...
It had to be this that attacked the owls the other night, and...but how did it get in the dorm in the first place? “You must be hungry...”
Well, it was a logically conclusion, he thought.
Looking about the hall, he considered his options carefully, ticking through all the things he could do. Granted, there wasn’t much he
could do, but it made him feel better to consider things as if he had much option for it. With a shuddering groan, he started to gather the beast up in his arms, careful to keep the things mouth away from his vital organs, and the claws pinned down. There was no way he was getting bit by this thing again.
Getting to his feet he moved to the stairs, he took the four flights down to the ground floor far quicker than he had ever done before in his life, before all but crashing into the wall at the bottom. Turning, he rushing into the freshman floor and made an all but made dash to Professor Simmon’s door. Banging on it, he hoped to get her attention long before any of the curious freshmen.
Amethyst Simmons was in her robe when she heard the knock on the door. Wondering what crisis the students were going to drop into her lap this time, she came slowly to open the door to her room. “Yes? Is there a...”
Gasping a little bit at the sight of Leon’s face, Professor Simmons took a mental deep breath and steeled her nerves. “Leon? What on earth happened to you? We have to get you to the Nurse’s office right away! Your face... what is that you’ve got there?”“It...It attacked me, I don’t...I don’t know what it is but this thing attacked me,” Leon let out, like a sprint through the gate. He shook his head, looking at the Professor with wide eyes. “It’s petrified, but....I don’t know how long that’ll last. And....”
Leon trailed off, not really sure what else to add to that long winded explanation. After all, he’d covered the important parts- he didn’t know what it was, and it had attacked him.
“I think this is what attacked the owls. It was trying to go back up when I petrified it.” There, the last bit of important information.
Professor Simmons thought quickly, something she was known for being able to do. “Alright. I will take this... thing from you. Lets get you to the infirmary so Nurse Ducote can get you patched up.” She held out her hands to receive the creature from Leon.
“If this is what attacked the owls, you’ll have done us a favor. Here...” She took her wand and cast another body-binding spell on the form in her arms. “That way it won’t wake up on us on the way over. Leon,” she looked at the blonde senior before her as she went to slip her shoes on, “You did well. Come on, now.” She went at a brisk pace with Leon to the infirmary, her mind quickly going over things as she glanced at the creature in her arms. This certainly did not bode well.
