To Shiloh
Bernadette didn't often go searching for other people. Other people came to her. But tonight she was feeling particularly proactive and she whisked through the house, poking her head into every room looking for Shiloh. She missed his face and she missed his voice. He was rapidly becoming her favorite, a position that held both advantages and disadvantages. Thanks to him, she had long since forgotten the two little half-demons who had left her before she'd truly been through with them.

"Shiloh?" she called out in a sing-song voice as she traveled down one of the long halls of the mansion. "Shiiiiiloh." She amused herself a great deal and his name was followed by the sound of her laugh. She trailed the tips of her fingers along the crisp white beadboard until she came to a doorway. Swinging into the room, she scanned it and then let out a frustrated little sigh when she saw that it was empty. And so she continued on her way, still calling out his name.

Bernie looked at him with surprise. "Never?" In her earlier days, she'd spent a lot of time in libraries, drawn to the quiet. "I love the smell of books and you always find strange people in the library," she mused as she drove.

It went by quickly and soon enough sh was leading him inside. It was a large place, with two floors. There weren't many people in there at this hour and Bernie could hear the faint ruffling of pages. She took Shiloh's hand and headed up the stairs before slipping through the stacks. She found the horror section, giggling to herself about hunting there. A man was leaning against one of the shelves, flipping through a large book as if he was deciding if it was worth lugging home. He had on a trucker hat, and a plaid flannel shirt over torn jeans. He was scruffy at best, but Bernie felt oddly drawn to him. She was certain that he was a necromancer and she wanted to devour him whole.

Morris knew she was there, able to sense the fact that her heart wasn't beating in her chest. But he couldn't tell how powerful she was, so he wasn't afraid of her.

Shiloh was anxious the entire ride. He kept fidgeting, his long fingers tugging at the hem of his shirt. Once he saw the library he sat up in his seat to peer at the building, surprised at how big it was. He slipped out of the car once it was parked and followed Bernie up the steps. When they were inside and had reached the horro section, he looked at Morris in interest. The man was scruffy, but he was striking in his own way.

She could feel his anxiety rolling off of him and she was curious about it. But instead of saying anything, she decided to let him stew a little. To be honest, the scent coming off of him because of it was intoxicating.

Tugging him around the corner, she moved like a small child playing hide and seek, bent over just a little as if she thought standing too tall would alert the man to her intentions. "What do you think of him? Does he seem different to you?" She said as she pulled Shiloh close so that she could speak below a whisper to be certain her voice wouldn't drift over to the man.

Shiloh wet his lips a little nervously as he looked at Morris. He wasn't sure what to think of the man, save that he was attractive.

"I don't know," he said softly. "Maybe? I like the way he looks," he added. "He's completely opposite of me."

Shiloh was delicate, pretty, even. But this man was masculine and rugged. Shiloh liked that and he sighed a little bit through his nose.

"He's not human," she noted with a knowing little smile. There was a lot of sensation to be had draining a necromancer. His sort of power spoke to the heart of her being, ultimately a dead thing. Even though Morris could weild no specific influence over her, his energy was the same as her's at its base. "And you like the way he looks?" She laughed a little at that, and even though the sound of her voice was elegant and pretty, there was a hint of derision there. "He looks homeless and dirty."

Shiloh smiled a little as his cheeks flushed with a bit of pink color. He glanced at Bernie, then offered a shrug of his slender shoulders before he returned his gaze to Morris.

"That's kind of why I like him," he said honestly. "He looks like a man. Not like me, I look... Not like a man."

While Bernie appreciated the boy's honesty, she wrinkled her nose at the sentiment. She was not entirely fond of men, finding that she prefered those males of the species who looked like Shiloh. "Men who look like that like to have control," she said with mild distaste. She'd spent her life escaping from that kind of control and she'd made a vow not to do the same with her unlife.

"Well, anyway, get an eyefull of him, darling, because he won't be alive for much longer. I do wonder if a necromancer can raise himself from the dead? Oh, probably not and if he could, important bits would be falling off of him all the time. He'd make a terrible lover."

"Maybe I like being controlled," Shiloh said with a little shrug as he chewed on his lower lip. When Bernie said the part about important bits falling off, his cheeks went pink. "Bernie!" he said with a shy little laugh as he moved to hide behind her a little. "You're really going to kill him?" he asked after a moment, his voice going a bit soft.

She'd fully planned on killing the man the moment she'd sensed his powers, but that softer tone from Shiloh got her attention and she glanced over her shoulder at him with a curious look on her face. To Bernie, playing little games with people was far more entertaining than a kill could ever be. "I had intended to do so, yes. Why?"

"I don't know," Shiloh said quietly with a shrug. "You said he isn't human, what is he, then?" he asked her curiously as he peered over at Morris. "Is he a shifter like Mason, or a demon?" He hadn't seen a demon yet, and he hadn't even considered that Morris might be something else entirely.

She watched his reactions carefully and was amused by his slight hesitation about killing. "Is it the killing, I wonder or is it him?" She would like to think that maybe Shiloh had found someone interesting to him in that way, especially if it might distract from Elgyn. There was something about Shiloh that she didn't want to share with the vampire.

"He's a necromancer. He plays around with dead things, like corpses and ghosts. Messy business really."

"I don't know, him I guess," Shiloh said as he slipped his hand into Bernie's. He hovered close to her, as if he was trusting her to protect him, and he was. He wasn't sure what from, though. "A necromancer? I didn't realize they existed too, though I guess I should expect that most things are. He can't do anything to you, right?"

She liked the feeling of his warm hand in her's. Leaning over to give him a kiss on the corner of his mouth. Laughing at his comment, she kissed him again before peering around the corner at the other man. "Power over me...because I'm a dead thing?" She mocked injury, as if being called dead hurt her feelings. She just liked to see the worried look on his face. "No," she said finally. "He can't do anything to me. Though he can sense that I'm here. They're notoriously passive sorts, no affiliation, frequently keep to themselves. I suppose I would too if I ran the risk of smelling like corpse."

Morris pretended to continue looking at his book, but he was payong close attention to the woman and her little companion. He was not a fan of vampires. Finally, he couldn't stand it anymore and moved closer to them. He wasn't afraid, but not because he was particularly confident in his abilities. He would have run if he hadn't thought that that would just excite the woman. "Deciding my fate amongst yourselves?" he said wryly.

"Oh no, I didn't mean it like that," Shiloh said earnestly with a frown. "I just don't want anything bad... To happen to you, and I don't know how some things work, that's all," he added, obviously concerned that he'd upset her. When he heard Morris' voice, his gaze snapped in the man's direction, and he arche a brow in surprise. He looked a little guilty, or like a deer caught in the headlights, and he held onto Bernie's hand a little tighter.

Morris looked between the two of them. "She'll probably eat you when she's done with you, you know." He pursed his lips, talking about Bernadette like she wasn't there. Morris didn't have a death wish, but he wasn't afraid of dying. Most of the time he didn't care one way or the other.

Bernie leaned forward and took a deep breath of the man. "I might eat him. He's terribly delicious and maybe someday I'll just lose control." She would do no such thing. Bernie never lost it, not on accident anyway. "And yes, we were deciding your fate. Would you like some input? I think my boy here likes you. I vote death, he votes life. So we need a tiebreaker. Isn't that right, Shiloh?"

Shiloh was well aware of the fact that he was always at Bernie's mercy. She could kill him in an instant, but he trusted her. Maybe he was silly to trust her, but he didn't care. At the exchange of words between the two, he stared over at Morris before he returned his gaze to Bernie.

"I imagine that he'll say live, too," he said before he looked back to Morris shyly.

Morris frowned at Shiloh. "That's an optimistic assumption," he said with the faintest hint of a smirk. He wondered if the young man did like him or if the vampire was just making fun of one of them. Bernie was hard to read. Instead of giving her an answer, he changed the subject. "You're from Coldwater," he said confidently. He recognized her. "Not a lot of exsanguination deaths in the area. I've always wondered why, given I can smell a huge nest of your kind there. Not into shitting where you sleep? Night trips to the city? Smart, I suppose."

Shiloh wasn't sure what to say or do when Morris looked at him and addressed him directly. He chewed on the inside of his lower lip and let his gaze drift down to the floor at Morris' feet. The man made his stomach twist into odd feelings and his heart seemed to speed up. He knew that Bernie would be able to tell, and he wondered if Morris could, too.

"She is always smart," he said quietly, finally lifting his gaze back up to Morris's face.

Morris was very bad at reading the living. It seemed as if a heartbeat threw him off. It had been that way his whole life and he'd eventually stopped trying to connect with people. Shiloh's shyness was alluring though, like someone running away, shrinking and in need of protection. Morris liked to rescue. Even if he felt disconnected from humanity, he had the urge to save it. That was why he'd become an EMT.

Bernie put her hand on Shiloh's shoulder, amused by his body's reaction. "You're making his blood pressure go up." She laughed, doing nothing to keep the boy's reactions under wraps. That made Morris look surprised and it was clear that expression didn't come to his face often. Bernie pushed Shiloh forward. "I'm going to go eat someone else. Shiloh, I'll be back for you later. Stay with this nice stranger here." Like dropping a kid off at daycare.

When Bernie pushed him forward, Shiloh's eyes went wide and he stumbled a little before he looked back at Bernie in surprise. He didn't know what to say, or what to do, and it really did look like a mother was dropping her kid off at the daycare and the kid was entirely anxious about it. Shiloh didn't venture off on his own, and though he'd managed on the streets before on his own (barely) he had grown ridiculously attached to companionship.

"You're coming back?" he asked softly, afraid he might be left behind. He wanted to be sure she would really be back for him.

Bernie offered him a fond little tut-tut, wagging her finger delicately back and forth at him. "Of course I'll be back. I would never leave you behind." Her mothering instinct was strong with her favorites, not to mention the idea that she owned them and wouldn't want to throw away such a precious commodity. In reality, she would be staying close, but she wanted to see how Shiloh acted when he was alone with the peculiar man.

Glancing back and forth between the two of them, Morris waited until Bernadette was on her way out until he spoke. "If you think I'm babysitting you while your freak of nature mummy goes hunting, you've got another thing coming." But he didn't move to leave.

Hearing Morris speak of Bernie like that instantly rubbed him the wrong way, and he wasn't sure he liked the man all that much anymore. He looked a little lost and a little hurt for a moment before he turned away from Morris to go disappear into the stacks. He planned on finding a book to read until Bernie came back for him. He didn't need to be babysat, he wasn't a child, he'd survived the streets on his own for a while after all. And he didn't want to talk to Morris if he was just going to be mean.

Morris watched him leave and he stood there stubbornly with his arms folded across his chest for a little bit. But it wasn't all that long before he followed after the young man. "You don't have to get your feathers in a fluff. I just meant--actually I don't really know what I meant. I just don't like to see humans hanging out with vampires. No one should have a death wish like that."

He got the strong feeling that he wanted to rescue this one, but that this one didn't want to be rescued. A sticky situation if he'd ever run into one.

Shiloh let his fingertips brush against the spine of each book, and he glanced over his shoulder to look back at Morris quietly before he looked forward again.

"I don't have a death wish," he said quietly. "Bernie takes care of me. If I had a death wish, I'd bother Elgyn," he added before he turned around to face Morris. "Why do you care, anyway?"

Morris finally had his arms at his sides as if he might be relaxing now that he had to pursue Shiloh, but as soon as the other man turned around, Morris had his arms back up at his chest, blocking himself off. He offered a shrug as he looked away from him and at the books on either side of them. "Because when you see a lot of death, life becomes really precious. I don't know." He mumbled.

He hated to admit that Bernie's words had wormed their way into his consciousness and he glanced at Shiloh's chest, wondering if his heart was still racing or if she'd been teasing him. He didn't like to be teased and he hated even more to be embarrassed.
