To Lawson
Wendell was painting the porch. The afternoon had been perfect for it and he'd set up little cones at the front door and a sign asking for people to go through the back door. No one really ever used the front door anyway, so the rerouted foot traffic hadn't been a lot.

Currently, he was finishing the tiny details of the railing, using a small brush to dab the fresh white paint into the crevices. He had smudges of white paint on his face and every time he wiped his brow, he got more paint on himself. But the job was nearly done and he'd enjoyed doing it.

Wendell had to stop himself from asking her if she was sure again. Instead, he started to head into the house, beckoning her to follow him. "I have books for you to read. I bought some for Kinley and I ended up keeping a few copies for myself." For his own research because even then he'd been considering looking for a surrogate, but he'd expected it to be farther in the future than now. But it was time and he was certain of it.

"Well, you don't have to read them, but of course I would recommend them. They're fascinating and I suspect they would hit home a little more for you given your gender. Are witches different? I've never known a pregnant witch before."

Lawson followed him, and she couldn't help but smile. Wendell was so sweet, and seeing him so excited was absolutely adorable. This was definitely something she wanted to do, especially seeing how excited he was.

"I'll read them, I'm sure they'll be helpful," she told him as they slipped inside. "And I think we're mostly the same as regular women. We have midwife's though, from the coven. They'll make sure everything is going all right with the pregnancy."

Which was good, considering the fact that it'd be a possible baby werewolf if it was male.

"We can all take some time to think about it more, explore our options." But it was clear he was already in planning mode, barreling forward as if they were off to the clinic tomorrow.

It struck him that the current little ones might take issue with not being the babies of the family anymore. He would start researching the best ways to introduce children to the idea of having a new baby.

Lawson smiled. She could tell that Wendell was all ready on planning mode, and she had a feeling that Hunter was going to be on board as well. She'd seen him with the little ones, and she knew how much he adored them. The pair were all ready amazing parents, why not have more children around?

"All right, well, when you talk to Hunter let me know?"

Wendell nodded fervently and then gave her another hug. This one, however, was far more civilized, less crushing. "I will," he promised before releasing her.

Lawson let out a soft laugh, and she hugged Wendell back warmly. When she pulled away, Julian was coming inside with a bundle of black fluff in his arms.

"Miah changed again," he said with a serious frown as he looked up at Wendell.

It had damn near caused Julian to shift, too, but he'd managed to hold off somehow and the little boy looked absolutely exhausted.

"He's heavy," Julian added as he tried to hold Miah up to Wen.

"Are you sure you're ready for more?" Lawson asked with a laugh, and it was clear the joke went right over little Julian's head.

Jeremiah had changed with his grandfather as well. The man had pushed a shift, though not harmfully since he was one of the best controlled Wendell had seen other than Hunter. Now it seemed like Jeremiah was popping back and forth all the time. Wendell reached down to pluck the puppy out of Julian's hands.

The frown was sweet and Wendell got down on his knees so he was level with the little boy. "I'm surprised you didn't change too. Did you try not to?" There were good and bad things about that, he supposed. Good because it meant Julian already had a goodly amount of control. Bad because Wendell worried the boy didn't like shifting and holding it back would make the change painful for him when it did have to happen.

When Wendell took Jeremiah from him, Julian relaxed and put his hands on his hips as he tipped his head up to look at the older wolf. Even kneeling, Wen was taller than him.

"I didn't wanna," he said softly with a furrowed brow. "It hurts and this is a new shirt," he added, meaning the Batman t-shirt that Wendell had gotten him earlier that way. "My clothes always get ruined when that happens and I don't like it."

It was obvious that the boy was going to be a bit of a priss, most likely.

Wendell reveled in the similarities between himself and the boy. He'd resisted his first shift for as long as he could and it had been very painful for him. The following shifts had been difficult too, mainly because Wendell hated forgetting things and he hated waking up all dirty.

He grinned and ruffled the boy's hair. "When you get older, it's easier to plan when you want to shift. Then you can take your clothes off first and fold them so that they don't get ruined," he reassured him.

"I'd like that," Julie said softly as he looked up at Wendell and leaned into his touch, and he smiled a little bit. "I don't like ruining my clothes at all. I like my clothes," he added with a serious frown suddenly. "I like things to be neat."

"Nothing wrong with that," he smiled. "Don't worry; I'll teach you all of the tricks to keeping your fur nice and avoiding mud." Wendell was very good at staying pristine. He wasn't nearly as OCD about it as someone like Basil could be, but he did like to keep his civility even in wolf form.

"We're a lot alike," he added, hoping that Julian would like to hear that.

"Okay, but I don't really like being naked," Julie said as he sat down on the floor to take his shoes off. "I'm hungry, can you make me a peanutbutter sandwich? When do you think Miah will change back? Do you think we'll have to be home schooled because we change, what if we change in the middle of class? That'd be bad."

Wendell accepted the barrage of an open ear as he stood back up to lead Julie into the kitchen, carrying Jeremiah on his hip. When they got there, he set the puppy on the floor, letting him do his own thing while he lifted Julian up to sit on the counter so he could watch the sandwich making proceedings.

"I think home schooling might be a good idea for awhile if we can't get the shifting under control. But you two have the whole summer to get used to it. Hunter's very good at helping out with that." His power made it easier to get the hang of controlling it. Without his guidance, a safe degree of control took far, far longer.

Lawson was hovering in the doorway to the kitchen, just watching the two with a warm smile. She had to get back home, though, so she waved a goodbye at the pair before she headed for the back door to slip outside. Julian watched her go before he settled his attention back on Wendell.

"Is Miah still too little for school? I don't like leaving him alone," Julian said as he watched Wen make the sandwiches. "I guess he'll be okay here."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

I'll start one up for them!

"Well, maybe we'll home school until he can go to school with you. You'll be in different classes, but you can look out for each other at lunch and you can ride the bus together." Or Wendell would insist on driving them to and from school until they were old enough to drive themselves.

Handing Julie a sandwich, he started in making a couple more.

"I'd like that very much, thank you," Julian said properly, because Wendell had been teaching him and Jeremiah manners and Julian took it very seriously. "Joshua hated leaving us alone. Sometimes I'd see him cry out front, on the porch, but I never told him. I don't think he wanted us to know. Don't tell him I told you, it might make him sad."

That broke Wendell's heart a little and he thought about Jason. He'd wanted to believe that the man had the best intentions, but it nagged at his conscience that Jason hadn't come to rescue the boys from their mother in the first place. He'd been rich and powerful for a long time, hadn't he? It would have been easy for him.

"I won't tell him. I think you're right that Joshua wouldn't want you to know that he cried. He likes to be very brave, and he is."

Finally, Julian seemed to remember his sandwich and he took a big bite. Despite learning his manners, he was still a messy eater, and peanutbutter got all over his cheeks. He chewed happily, though, completely unaware of how he looked.

"How come you make so many sandwiches?"

"Because wolves need to eat more. We have a high metabolism--that just means it takes more food to keep our bodies going strong." He laughed a little. "Like a big truck needs more gas."

He took a napkin and wiped at Julian's cheeks before digging into his own sandwich. He liked having Julian sit on the counter because that put him more up at an adult height so they could have a conversation.

"Oh," Julie said, seemingly satisfied with that answer. He swung his legs a little bit and took another bite. "Can I have some milk, please?" he asked, because the peanutbutter was sticking to the roof of his mouth and nothing went better with it than milk. "Who's that older man? Joshua doesn't like him much, I can tell."

Wendell fetched the boy some milk, pouring it into a glass that could fit Julian's small hands. "Well," he began, trying to figure out an appropriate thing to say. "He's a man who heard about you three boys being sold and he wanted to come and see if you were all right." That was the truth, just not the whole truth.

Julian wasn't sure how to take that response. He sipped at his milk instead, and went quiet for a moment as he thought about Wendell's answer.

"How come he'd wanna see if we were okay if he doesn't know us?" he asked, his brow knitting up together. "Did he want to buy us? You're not gonna let him, are you?" he asked, his brow furrowing even more and he almost looked like he might start to cry he was so worried.

"No, no, no, of course not! You're not for sale. People aren't ever for sale, Julian. Wherever you go is your choice and the choice of people who love you from now on, all right?" His voice was firm, but not in a scolding way. He just wanted Julian to be reassured of his conviction.

And Wendell finally just had to shrug at that question of why. He wasn't going to make up a reason, so he feigned ignorance. It was very uncharacteristic of Wendell, so it was obvious to a smart boy that something was up, but also obvious that Wendell wasn't going to give out more information about the situation.

Julian seemed to calm down real quick at Wendell's assurance. He sniffled and sipped at his milk before he reached for one of the extra sandwiches Wen had made to start in on it, too.

"Do you like changing into a wolf?" he asked, "When I'm done eating I think I want to nap. Would you nap with me for a little while?"

Wendell made a bit of a face, unsure of how to answer that. "Well--yes and no. It's hard for me to let go of my human side. I like things just so and when you're a wolf there's so much going on inside your chest that your human thoughts get muddled up. I like to think about more than running and jumping and catching rabbits." He liked to talk to the boys like little adults. It was important to be honest with them and show them that adults were friends and people too, not just authority figures or even good providers. They were pack. "But Hunter helps me and it's good to let go every now and again. It's good for us."

There was just no describing how much he adored Julian. He put his hand on his head, smoothing his hair back and leaning forward to give him a kiss. "A nap sounds like just the thing after painting the porch."
