open to pirate arrrrrrrr [he's probably glaring rn]
Vance hated when Pirate had to work late into the night. He was a little more than spoiled by the other wolf's warmth when he'd crawl into bed at night, and having to go to bed without his mate was disappointing. It wasn't even about sex - it wasn't as if they had sex every single night, it was just about the comfort of having Pirate there.

School had started back up, and Vance was now into his sophomore year. He was about to be sixteen now and it was strange to think that he'd known Pirate for nearly an entire year now. He'd been through a hell of a lot for a boy his age, wolf or not, and sometimes he still had nightmares about being kidnapped and especially about Kenneth. He never let on about them, though, because he felt a little silly. It'd been over six months ago, hadn't it? Sometimes he couldn't remember. Usually when he wokeup from a dream, he just snuggled against Pirate and went back to sleep.

Tonight, though, Pirate wasn't there to snuggle up to and even if he was Vance was in the middle of a dream instead of waking up from it. His entire body was stiff, posture not at all natural for one who was sleeping, and every now and then he'd mutter or whimper about something in his sleep.

"Oh, telling me what to do now?" He leaned back to look at Vance. He couldn't resist pointing that out instead of just following the suggestion. But he nodded and stood up to get changed. He was the sort of wolf who was comfortable with some nudity, but frequently chose to wear clothing. He loved the fact that Vance slept naked though.

After brushing his teeth and washing his face, he slipped into his pajama bottoms and got into bed. He was getting the feeling that dreams like this had happened a lot more often than this one time. He didn't like that he hadn't been aware of them.

When Pirate settled back into the bed, Vance turned to settle into the crook of his mate's arm. He rested his head against Pirate's shoulder and blinked a few times before he tipped his head up to look at the older wolf.

"I hate that I still dream about him sometimes," he said quietly, meaning Kenneth. "I should be over it by now. Nothing really bad even happened to me." Not like it had to Wendell, anyway.

Pirate should have known that it would take longer for Vance to feel perfectly safe again. If he was realistic, the boy would probably never be quite the same. He'd just wanted to believe that Vance was healed. He didn't want his mate to be in pain like this.

"You were kidnapped. That's a big deal, Vance. It's a big deal and you don't have to be 'over it' at any particular time. I'm better at physical healing, emotional shit takes longer. I'm sorry I'm not more help." He worried about that.

	"You help," Vance insisted softly as he draped an arm around Pirate's waist, just wanting to be closer to the other wolf. "Even when you're asleep and I wake up, just you being here helps," he added before he leaned up for a soft kiss. "I just sometimes feel like it's over. I'm safe now, I'm happy. Vance let his fingers splay out against Pirate's bare chest, and he was quiet for a few moments before he closed his eyes and let out a quiet sigh. He didn't want to make Pirate feel like he should have known, but at the same time he didn't want to admit he'd been hiding it in a way.

"Do you know what happened to Wendell?" he asked after a moment, because while he was more than sure Hunter knew, the others he wasn't so sure about. And really, he was sure Wendell wouldn't want them to know, but Pirate was important to Vance and he trusted he wouldn't say anything to anyone else.

While Pirate knew that Wendell had probably experienced some bad things, he'd never really thought about it before. Slowly, he shook his head. "No, I don't suppose I know what happened to Wendell. Is that what happened in the dream?" He wondered if Vance's horror had something to do with whatever had happened to Wen.

"Maybe," Vance replied as his eyes opened up, and he furrowed his brow some. "I don't know," he added before he bit down on his bottom lip before he let his fingertips start to draw little designs against Pirate's skin. "Sometimes I can't remember the dreams, just the feeling."

At the lazy little touches, Pirate's eyes drooped. Part of him didn't think he deserved to feel so good in the middle of talking about such things. "What happened to Wendell?" He asked. Now he wanted to know, especially if it related to Vance.

Vance wasn't sure if he should say something now that Pirate had voiced the question. It wasn't his to tell, was it? With a sigh, he rolled so that he was half on top of Pirate, one leg now slung over the older wolf's waist.

"Joseph - he used me to force Wendell to have sex with him," he said quietly after a moment. Saying it like that made him feel so guilty all over again, and his brow furrowed up.

Pirate nearly winced at the wording. "Jeremiah was there. Do you blame him for what Joseph did to Wendell? Because if you blame yourself, you'll need to blame him too." He was firm with that.

His hand smoothed up and down Vance's back, fingers pressing lightly against him.

He tried not to cringe at the visuals that came with that. It reminded him of how animalistic and horrible Robert had been before Louisa had been able to do something about it. He knew ruthless packs existed--his had been one--but living where they did now, it was hard to believe that someone could be so cruel to a child.

Pirate was glad they were dead. Instead of prying more, he kissed the top of Vance's head. "Feel like you can go back to sleep?"

"I guess a part of me feels kind of glad I was there, because if it'd just been Wen and Jeremiah," Vance said softly before he bit down on his lower lip and went quiet.

At Pirate's question, he shook his head a little bit and pressed his face against the older wolf's chest with a heavy sigh.

"I'm gonna be so tired in school today," he said softly, "I kind of don't want to go," he added, which was odd for him because he actually enjoyed going to his classes.

It was hard to get back into the swing of school. Pirate kept forgetting that Vance was back in classes. He hated it. But even if he really wanted to encourage Vance to play hooky, he resisted.

"I've got to get someone to cover Morris's hours for me. I can't stand not being around to see you enough." He smoothed his hand over Vance's hair.

When Pirate's hand slipped through his hair, Vance tipped his head to the side and brushed his mouth against the inside of his mate's wrist. He opened his eyes and looked up at Pirate, knowing the sun would be up soon and he would have to get ready for school. He curled up against Pirate a little more with a heavy sigh.

"My head hurts," he said softly. "I just want to sleep in with you."

"I'll bet Hunter would call in for you if you wanted to stay home for a day. You can't possibly have any tests this early on." And he knew Vance wasn't the sort of person who was going to skip school if he could avoid it.

He laid Vance down and rubbed his forehead for a little while, trying to soothe him as best he could. "Maybe a shower will help."

Vance closed his eyes again and relaxed against Pirate as he felt his head being rubbed. After a moment, he opened them back up before he wriggled so that he could settle on top of the other wolf.

"Are you suggesting I shower alone or with you?" he asked with a slow smile.

Pirate raised an eyebrow. "Well, I wasn't suggesting one over the other. Are you offering me an invitation to your shower?" He was exhausted, but he had no intention of going to sleep until Vance was off to school or had decided to stay home and sleep with him.

"Lets sleep in and worry about showering later," he added, because all he wanted to do was fall asleep next to Pirate since he hadn't been able to for the past few days.

As much as a naked, wet Vance was tempting, Pirate's body was thrilled with the prospect of drifitng off to sleep holding on to Vance.

"I love you," he murmured, eyelids feeling incredibly heavy now that he knew Vance was going to lie with him. "Sleep is never right without you."

Hearing Pirate say those words made Vance feel warm all over, and he smiled a little against the older man's chest before he lifted his head up and leaned in to press a soft kiss against Pirate's mouth.

"I love you too," he said back before he put his head back down with a yawn. "Really?" he asked, "You don't mind me stealing covers or using you as a human pillow?"

"I'm used to much more unpleasant sleeping conditions at work," he assured Vance. Catching naps in the backs of ambulances made a bed quite a priviledge. Even better to have Vance in it, the smell of him so close.

This was a good place and he hoped Vance wasn't faking it just to make him not worry about his nightmares.

He was quiet for a moment before he sighed, "I promise I'll wake you next time. If I have a dream like that again and you're here. And if you're not, then I'll tell you about it, okay?"

That was exactly the sort of thing Pirate wanted to hear. He didn't want Vance keeping those things from him. "Good, because that's what mates do. It means neither one of us ever has to deal with something on our own again." And he was serious about that; they were a pair now.
