Giving Thanks
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." JFK

In America today is a day for being thankful for the things in people's lives. Today was a day to celebrate family, friends, prosperity and health with food, family and friends. It is a time to reflect on what is important us and to recognize the gratitude we hold for having those things in our lives.

"CEO of Mine, there are some things we should probably talk about, regarding the whole future-of-our-relationship thing." Hal says.

"Have you ever thought about having kids? Not with me, necessarily, but in general?" he asks.

Carol's mouth opened. And closed. She began to speak and stopped.

Finally... "Children?"

"Yes, dear." Hal says, nodding slowly.

"You know, those miniature humans that take about nine months to bake before they're ready? Those guys." he chuckles.

"Should I take that as a 'no'?" he asks.

"Oh, /those/ guys." Carol leaned against him. "I'm surprised you're thinking about kids. I used to want six of them to inherit the company and fly all the planes."

"Only six? I was aiming higher, like twelve. I mean, it would take six kids just to run the whole company after you've turned into the Billion-Dollar Princess. We'd need at /least/ six more to fly the planes.

Actually, we'd better just go for an even twenty to beat out the Duggers and make sure the planes are adequately staffed along with rotating back-ups." Hal says, trying not to laugh at what he believes is Carol's incoming expression of horror at the idea of twenty kids.

Horror is right! Hal looked far too earnest about the subject. Until he mentioned twenty. Even that was too many for Hal Jordan.

She elbowed him lightly. "Are you planning to have a few of these kids? I certainly can't have them all."

Hal laughs aloud. "Okay, twenty might be a little much. One of the upsides to you getting pregnant at any point would be that you'd /have/ to hire another assistant, which you seem to be avoiding like the plague." Hal says.

He looks down at her with a serious expression on his face, putting all jokes aside.

"I've been thinking about kids a lot lately, Carol. I've been thinking about what I could teach a child, too. My dad didn't live long enough to see me grow up and find a woman who'd make an honest man of me. I love playing with my niece and nephew. It used to be enough to be 'Cool Uncle Hal' who took them to the park or out for a hot dog, then returned them home." Hal says, phrasing his next words carefully.

"That's not really enough anymore. I'd like to have big family dinners with my brother's family, my family and friends, and celebrate stuff like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Independence Day." Hal says.

"I'd like to have a family and I can't think of anyone better to do it with." he says.

She pretended to think about the idea, brushing the hair from his forehead. "I could see a couple of little girls with your smile and ability to find trouble. I just don't know if you'll get them by next Thanksgiving."

"Girls? I think boys would be much more appropriate, don't you?" Hal asks. Girls would be karmic payback for his reputation over the years, which is why the idea of daughters scares the crap out of him.

"Oh, I don't mean they need to be here by next year. I'd just like that to be a consideration someday. That's all." he smiles.

"That's good to know. Even my organizational skills would be stretched for that timeframe."

"Honestly, I haven't thought about kids in a very long time. I wanted the whole package - husband, kids, company. Haven't had much luck with the first requirement." She smiled, indicating it was okay to find humor the idea. "But I can safely promise we can put it on the consideration list."

"Well, the first requirement seems like it's looking up for you." Hal grins.

"We'll be happy, Carol. I promise you that." Hal says.

She grinned back. Impossible not to when he looked so happy.

"Just promise me that you'll be here to work at it."

"With the exception of the occasional space foray, I'm not going anywhere. I've got a CEO to keep happy." Hal says.

"So...about that dinner. Should we just do turkey sandwiches and Stove Top?" he asks jokingly.

"About dinner..." She hooked a finger in his collar and tugged him down for a kiss. "Since this might be the last 'small' dinner we ever have that we don't have to be good examples, I say we eat dessert first. Christmas is time enough to meet the JLA/JSA. I think I'd like you to myself for this one Thanksgiving."

"Has anyone ever told you that you have the best ideas? Wait. That /is/ why they pay you the big bucks, isn't it?" Hal says, kissing her.

Then he'll scoop her up into his arms and carry her away to the "dinner table" for dessert.
