New Year's Dead (New Year's Day, Open to reactions)
The information has been coming in from around the world since 1:00 am EST. Each news outlet tells the story in a slightly different fashion, but the facts remain the same: at some time after 12:00am, planes on five continents fell from the sky, cars slammed into each other in traffic and regular people going about their every business simply fell over unconscious for no discernible reason.

"This is Austin Davis for the Daily Planet. The only word that can adequately describe what has happened is "catastrophe". Information is still coming in at this time, but it seems that most of Earth's inhabitants seemed to lose consciouness for exactly two minutes. In that time, planes,c cars and buses crashed, pedestrians were hit where they lay, and the world fell into chaos. Even now, the death toll is nearing the double digits and still climbing.

Stranger still is that the survivors, this reporter included, all report having a lucid dream of some kind during their black-out. Few dreams were alike, but one common thread unites them all; each person spoken to thus far believes they saw a relative or friend or lover who passed away some time ago returning to speak with them and offer advice. Many are shaken and unable to understand the meaning of these visions or why they were given.

The heroic community has leaped into action valiantly, aiding in relief efforts, but many are asking if the heroes knew about it in advance. Moreover, may are asking why America remained unaffected by the blackout. Thus far, no portion of the United States has reported any crashes or loss of life due to the blackout. We will bring you more on this story as it develops.

Austin Davis for the Daily Planet, London."

Mitzi couldn't believe the insanity going on right now. It was like every bad thing that could happen in the world was happening en masse.

She sat with Mrs. West and prayed that Jai would come home safely, but when she saw Irey's face upon her arrival, Mitzi knew it wasn't to be.

She felt so bad for her friend and wished she could help her somehow. For now, however, Mitzi does her best to help Mrs. West through her grief.

When she'd gotten the call that there might be a lead on Jai, Traya had spend to the West house, even if she'd been too late to actually go to investigate with people.

And suddenly, it's the worst of all possible news and she's not sure the world is ever going to be right again.

Outside, the wind began to pick up.

Mitzi was in the kitchen making tea when Traya arrived, but when she did, Mitzi felt even worse about everything that was happening. Jai talked about Traya all the time, about how they'd met George Lucas together and how great she was.

Mitzi wished there was a guy that talked about her the same way.

"Hi, Traya? Um...I'm Mitzi. I don't know if you remember me. I'm sorry for you loss. Jai tutored me in math and he talked about you all the time. He always said he was lucky to have you in his life." Mitzi says sadly.

Traya wiped away a tear. She kinda remembered Mitzi from the rating thing.

"Thank-you," she said, quietly. "I was really luck. He was the best."

The wind outside was really howling now. Tree branches and even windows shook.

Mitzi, not knowing the connection between Traya and the wind simply looked outside with a little surprise.

"Wow, the wind really picked up out there. I guess even Mother Nature hates what's happening. Jai was that kind of guy, though; you couldn't dislike him. He was good to everyone, even people that didn't deserve it." Mitzi says.

"I just hope he didn't feel any pain or suffer. No one deserves that." Mitzi says, thinking of her mother.

Traya frowned, closed her eyes, and concentrated. God. She hadn't lost control like that in just about forever....

"I know," she said. "I just hope whoever did that to him is already dead. Because if not..."

"Traya, I know that sounds like a great idea, but...would Jai really want you to go down that road? He wouldn't want you focusing on that kind of hate and pain, I don't think. I think he'd want someone he trusts to check up on his family and make sure they're okay." Mitzi says.

"And the person responsible for this will get theirs. The world has a way of balancing things out in the end." she says.

And there goes the wind picking up again.

Traya clenched her fist. "It just hurts so much..."

"I know, Traya. It does hurt, but we can't let it make us into people we aren't. I think that would hurt Jai more than anything. He's still alive in our hearts, Traya. As long as we remember that, he's never gone." Mitzi says gently.

"It's just... it's just..." Traya flails for the right word. "What's the point of saving the world if we can't save the people we love?"

"I wish I had answers for you, Traya. Life is unfair, though. It's one of the first lessons we learn. My mom, when she wasn't drinking, used to tell me that losing something matters, but what we have left matters more." Mitzi says.

"We're going to miss Jai forever, but he wouldn't want any of us to stand still, I don't think. We've got to get out there and keep helping people who can't help themselves, like he did." she says.

Traya put her hands on the kitchen counter to steady herself, eyes closed as she fought to keep herself from crying.

She laughed, the kind of laugh that only comes from grief. "Stand still. Heh. See, he was a Flash and he wouldn't wan to stand still and..."

The laugh quickly gives way to sobs.

Mitzi simply holds Traya, soon crying herself.

Traya eventually managed to quiet her sobs. "...Sorry," she said, quietly.

"You've got nothing to apologize for. You're grieving the loss of someone you love. If you weren't crying your eyes out, I'd be way more worried." Mitzi says.

"Mrs. West could use some support right now, Traya. You two should talk." Mitzi says.

Traya sniffs, then nods thoughtfully. "Yeah. Guess I should."
