New Year's Dead (New Year's Day, Open to reactions)
The information has been coming in from around the world since 1:00 am EST. Each news outlet tells the story in a slightly different fashion, but the facts remain the same: at some time after 12:00am, planes on five continents fell from the sky, cars slammed into each other in traffic and regular people going about their every business simply fell over unconscious for no discernible reason.

"This is Austin Davis for the Daily Planet. The only word that can adequately describe what has happened is "catastrophe". Information is still coming in at this time, but it seems that most of Earth's inhabitants seemed to lose consciouness for exactly two minutes. In that time, planes,c cars and buses crashed, pedestrians were hit where they lay, and the world fell into chaos. Even now, the death toll is nearing the double digits and still climbing.

Stranger still is that the survivors, this reporter included, all report having a lucid dream of some kind during their black-out. Few dreams were alike, but one common thread unites them all; each person spoken to thus far believes they saw a relative or friend or lover who passed away some time ago returning to speak with them and offer advice. Many are shaken and unable to understand the meaning of these visions or why they were given.

The heroic community has leaped into action valiantly, aiding in relief efforts, but many are asking if the heroes knew about it in advance. Moreover, may are asking why America remained unaffected by the blackout. Thus far, no portion of the United States has reported any crashes or loss of life due to the blackout. We will bring you more on this story as it develops.

Austin Davis for the Daily Planet, London."

Red Robin had fallen asleep in his chair after his argument with J'anna, but the droning of his messenger woke him.

DarkKnowledge124: HUGE power-surge last night in Capetown, South Africa. May be what you were looking for.

Tim blinks at the screen as his thoughts slam into place. How did he MISS that?

Redbird: Time?

DarkKnowledge124: 12:01 EST. Incidents in London, China, Japan, South America, Australia, and others. No American incidents.

Tim switches to a news channel on his console and begins looking over the reports. His contact was right. No American incidents.

Redbird: Thanks for info.

Tim shuts down the connection and picks up his phone, calling Wally West. He relays the information he just received.

The only response Tim received was the sound of air being parted as the Flash raced toward Capetown and his son.

Lian was still shaking after she saw the news, as she dialed Tim's number.

J'anna woke up on the couch with this gut-wrenching feeling that something was wrong. Probably because of the time and because Lian's ringtone was blaring on Tim's phone. She picked up the phone and answered it as she wandered down to Tim.

"Lian, it's J'anna." She didn't have to turn on the television. She read Tim's mind. "Tim! Lian's on the phone."

J'anna made it to Tim's desk and plugged it in to a better speaker than the phone itself had.

"I need to find your brother, stay put Iris," Wally had told his daughter before racing off to Capetown after he hung up the phone.

No. She wasn't staying behind this time. She had to go with him.

He was going yell at her later, probably, but not even five seconds after her father left, Iris was out the door after him.

Wally West learned in his teens that his speed could do immense damage if he ran as fast as he could at all times. For years, he'd practiced staying within a certain limit in populated areas so that he didn't cause additional damage in battle.

Today, he nearly forsakes all of that training in the effort to get to his son. It's a running joke that the World's Fastest Family is often late to many things. Uncle Barry was frequently late for dates with Aunt Iris even after he obtained his speed.

I cannot be late today. I will not be late today.

As soon as Wally gets to the Atlantic Ocean, he pours it on, racing headlong toward Africa faster than any instrument can track.

One and one-half minutes after picking up Tim Drake's call, the Flash is standing amid the ruins of a scientific complex. The damage was catastrophic. Metal was strewn about, while walls had collapsed inward or fallen altogether. The smell of smoke and charred flesh permeated the air.

Jai could have outrun an explosion. Even if he'd been at the heart of it, he still could have gotten himself and others to safety...

And then Wally saw the first of many corpses among the ruins. He tried to lift some of the debris, but he's only the Fastest Man Alive, not the strongest.

He turns on his communicator.

"Attention, Justice League of America...I have a Code Red at the following coordinates. If you're not already involved in relief efforts elsewhere, I could use you in Capetown." Flash says.

"Daddy?" Iris stopped next to her father.

Her face paled when she saw the debris.

"Daddy...Jai got away, right? He got away?"

Wally is listening as Kyle, Dick, Donna, Victor and Garth all inform him that they're on the way to help him out. The Titans share a communications channel with the League, so the others got the message in minutes.

Wally wanted to tell Kyle to stay home and be with Jenny, as they'd just lost Mickey, but his old friend was the Green Lantern for a reason. He never backed down from anything, no matter how difficult.

Iris' words break him out of his momentary rise in spirits. He turns and looks at his daughter with displeasure.

"Irey, I told you to stay at home. You need to go home and sit with your mother right now, young lady." Wally says, his tone coming across far more harshly than he intended. He didn't want her to see this, see all of these dead people that they couldn't save.

He didn't want her there if his worst fear had indeed come to pass.

"Honey, I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be here. I asked you stay at home for a reason." Wally says.

"I'm not going anywhere," she said sternly, folding her arms over her chest.

"I have to be here, I have to see if Jai's okay. I have to make sure he's alright. I can't just sit at home with Mom, waiting...."

In the midst of the conversation Tim was having with Lian, J'anna heard her own phone ring--the ringtone of the London hospital where her mother was being cared for.

"I need to get that," she said with fear in her voice. London had been impacted by the Event. What if her mother had died?

Tentatively, she answered her phone, walking away from Tim so that she could take the call without disturbing him.

"This..this is J'anna."

Aubrey Sparks still couldn't believe it. The first thing she had seen when she woke up was J'onn...who asked her if she was alright. And then told her everything that she had missed over the last twenty-two years.

Like the fact that her daughter was now fully grown.

"J'anna? This is Aubrey Sparks." A long pause. "Your mom."

Your mom.

The voice was almost exactly as J'anna imagined it--very much like her own. For a moment she was lost in the sound of that voice, how it had wrapped around the letter's of her name, how it had even spoken the space between the J and the a.

"Mommy?"

J'anna yelped the word and started to cry.

Angela wakes up the following day in her hotel room, still shaking off last night's headache and activities. She'd had a lot of fun, but today it was back to work.

She turned on the TV and what she saw confirmed one thing about the New Year.

Work was going to be tough for a long time to come.

"The hits just keep on comin'." she says, starting to dial numbers. Mom was going to want to talk about this and so was dad and maybe Mr. Black as well.

Mitzi couldn't believe the insanity going on right now. It was like every bad thing that could happen in the world was happening en masse.

She sat with Mrs. West and prayed that Jai would come home safely, but when she saw Irey's face upon her arrival, Mitzi knew it wasn't to be.

She felt so bad for her friend and wished she could help her somehow. For now, however, Mitzi does her best to help Mrs. West through her grief.

When she'd gotten the call that there might be a lead on Jai, Traya had spend to the West house, even if she'd been too late to actually go to investigate with people.

And suddenly, it's the worst of all possible news and she's not sure the world is ever going to be right again.

Outside, the wind began to pick up.

Mitzi was in the kitchen making tea when Traya arrived, but when she did, Mitzi felt even worse about everything that was happening. Jai talked about Traya all the time, about how they'd met George Lucas together and how great she was.

Mitzi wished there was a guy that talked about her the same way.

"Hi, Traya? Um...I'm Mitzi. I don't know if you remember me. I'm sorry for you loss. Jai tutored me in math and he talked about you all the time. He always said he was lucky to have you in his life." Mitzi says sadly.

Traya wiped away a tear. She kinda remembered Mitzi from the rating thing.

"Thank-you," she said, quietly. "I was really luck. He was the best."

The wind outside was really howling now. Tree branches and even windows shook.

"No! No! No! NO! NO! Chou ma niou!" Michael was somewhere between Saddened and Furious when the news made it to the YJLA headquarters. He had offered to take Jais monitoring duty while he was gone as a show of friendship.

Michael was the kind of guy who was caustic, but bonded quickly to anyone who could put up with him. In the community, that number had been two: Cindy Lord and Jai West.

And now one of them was gone. Just like that.

It's difficult to find the time to mourn in the chaos of the New Year, but Dinadan finds it anyway. They'd known each other since they were kids, it's the least that Jai deserves now.

Shrunk down to his normal size and dressed as the Katarthan prince he is, Dinadan crouches down in front of the fire he built on a saucer on his desktop with his sheathed sword across his knees. Normally, this would be done with the other warriors of a troupe; but if they cannot attend because they're too busy, too far away, or mourn in other ways, a fire is an appropriate partner.

Dinadan cries quietly as he tells his friend's stories to the flames.

Alina's powers aren't the best for shoring up wrecked buildings and roads, but she does what she can. Doing something, anything, is better than sitting around and nursing the gut-punch of Kid Flash's death. Besides, the last thing his friends and loved ones need is someone who only barely knew him and only barely knows them standing around mouthing on about how she's sorry for their loss. Her energies are better spent out here so that they don't have to be.
