It's a Date (And Hilarity Possibly Ensues)
Since the Outsiders were one of the few groups out there with a true secret headquarters, bringing GK back there hadn't been an option.  Joey had, instead, opted to meet and pick up his date at the coffee shop where they'd met.  True, going on a date in the middle of a possible zombie invasion wasn't necessarily the best idea, but as far as he was concerned, if they needed more heroes, they'd page.  Whatever was going on now, it was way above his paygrade.

He checked his watch.  He was a little early.  Good.  Drawing a handful of stares, but if the last few days and coming close to dying had taught him anything, it was that life was way to short to even begin to worry about that.

Weird thought.  This was, technically, his first real date in a long while.   Oh, sure, they're been any number of chicks with tattoos and piercings and dye-jobs off to piss off daddy by dating the elemental freak, or the one who'd had a fetish for having melty-stuff on her, and plenty of other fly-by-night girls whose names he could probably not remember....   But this was the first true date, as opposed to a hook-up.

Huh.  Maybe we was growing up after all.

Scary thought.

"Yeah. I think she always grounded him in a way his more experimental work didn't. But I can respect their wanting to call it a day while their stuff was still great instead of riding it into the ground. And here's hoping he'll have plenty of elegant Country Music Ladies to produce for."

GK listens and nods. "And there's certainly nothing wrong with that." GK, you practically have little hearts over your eyes.

"Better than burnin' out, I guess," Joey agrees. He squints for a minute. "Ah, right. With whatshername... Loretta Lynn?"

He's not completely oblivious to the attraction, and gives a grin. "Trying to focus more on the first and second... while still leavin' plenty of time for the third."

"Yeah. I only like country when it's torch-songy and sorta raw, and the album he helped her with totally was."

"How's the zombie apocalypse going? Even the crime patterns have changed in the Triangle, I hear, 'cause people are so agitated."

"Eeeh, it's okay, I guess," Joey said. "Heard a buncha peeps are going into space to do some... big... spacy... thing."

"Don't think so," he replied, though truthfully, he didn't know. They hadn't heard from Red Robin or J'anna in a while.

"We're a little more down-to-Earth, usually."

"Yeah... well, I'm not sure I saw any picture, big or small, for a lot of my life," Joey admits.

"Just whatever I wanted."

GK's face softens, beyond just the cow-eyes. "Joey, seriously, if you've managed to sort out that issue by your age, you're doing okay. It's obvious we're both totally spoiled. At least we're not rotten."

GK giggles. "That would be great," he says as they approach the restaurant. "Grandma would love to have a granddaughter."

"Yeah, well, Em's not too..."

Wait.

Joey reviewed that statement in his head, examining it to see if it had an "another" hidden in there somewhere, possibly off to the side.

"Wait, wut?"

"She'd love a granddaughter. I mean, I'm always up for a mani-pedi with her and Mom, but --"

And then, the letters suddenly flash across Joey. The Right Girl

Girl. Not person. Girl.

He was straight. The hot guy he'd been swooning over for days, the one he was having such a lovely evening with, was straight.

"Joey..."

Joey continued reviewing the contents of those statements, and the words found their way to his mouth while his brain was still mildly engaged.

"You're... not a chick, are you?"

The sounds of gunfire and smashing glass gave the two a much needed interruption. From up the street, an upscale electronics store was being robbed. At least four, maybe five guys, plus the one driving the getaway van.

Joey had never been more grateful for the high crime rate.

"Hero-time," he agreed, already taking off towards the robbers.
