Sticks and Stones
Zoe crouched in a shadow, watching a body climb out of a window onto a fire escape. Fire escapes out to be outlawed, she thought. What good were they to anybody minding their own business? They were practically welcome mats to thugs looking for a place to rob.

"Pay attention," she hissed at GK nearby. If she didn't know better, she'd think his mind was a million miles away and not on the job at hand. Maybe she /didn't/ know better. Last week he was moping over some guy and now he wasn't.

"He's great. I worry that Mom'll send him down here to check on me and he'll get all worked up, but he's a wonderful person." Pause. A look at Zoe. "And despite being my primary male role model, he's straight, too." He smiles.

"That /was/ my next question," she admitted. "You got any moral objection to arranging a blind date? Maybe just lunch?."

"The excuse doesn't have to be a good one. I'll tell her your mom wants to make sure you actually got friends down here and I need her to make a good impression." Zoe smiled with a hint of self-mocking. "I don't make a real good first impression, wearing the wrong colors and everything."

He giggles. "I apologize if i have a discerning eye. Some people recommend Wintery wardrobes for any girl who's not a total WASP, but I know an autumn when I see one. Sounds like a perfectly good pretense to me, but of course you should know you're still perfect in your completely inappropriate wardrobe." Pause. Smile. "But if you'd like to make a few alterations for movie night with Trey...."

"I'm not a Ghetto Barbie." Pause. "What sort of alterations?"

"I know you're not," he says earnestly. "I have way better dolls than Barbie anyway. Just an artist offering to do his craft, that's all. I'd just recommend a nice shirt in a deep shade: earth tones, bittersweet reds, forest-or-camo greens. If you were willing to try makeup, it'd be no powder, no paint, just a few sweeps to define your cheekbones, a little bit of neutral shadow, some mascara."

"Guess cherry lip balm don't count as makeup." Since she'd reached the age when Mom thought dating would be good for her, Zoe had known she was disappointing Michelle in a girly way. She'd inherited her mother's passion to make the Triangle a fit place to live, and no desire for heels, hairstyles and makeup. Until Trey had come along and shown some genuine interest, rather than the usual attention she got on the streets, there hadn't been a need to change.

Maybe a little change would be a good thing. To go along with the change in employment and the chance to make a difference doing what she enjoyed.

"I could do some shopping."

"Not really. Although trust me, that's loads better than troweling on the Tacky Flamingo, definitely."

He Smiles at the last part. "Awesome. I'd love to go with you. And I'm not trying to pressure you to overbudget or anything. We can do Target--" he pronounced it 'Tar-ZHEY' "-- and still find you something terrific."

Target was acceptable and she wouldn't have to explain receipts to Mom. GK was brilliant.

She smiled at him. "Okay, we'll go shopping. You pick up anything in pink and I'll beat you with your own stick."

He grins, clutching his stick protectively. "No Pink. I'd say 'scout's honor', but for some reason, I didn't jive well with official Boy Scout policy." He wiggled a few French-manicured fingers.

"So...Mom'll be thrilled that Uncle Jed's allowed to come check on me. When should we do this to them?"

Zoe realized that it wouldn't just be an outfit. There would have to be a manicure involved. Her nails were short out of necessity, no polish but clean.

"Next week good? Mom's calendar is busy the first few days, but then it's clear in the early afternoon. He won't start lecturing about vegetarians and animal rights, will he?"

"Not unless the place serves milkfed veal, and those places are disgustingly overpriced anyway. Wednesday at 1 should work just fine for Uncle Jed; his schedule's flexible."

"The place won't serve milkfed veal. Mom doesn't do overpriced. And if it doesn't look like they get along, lunch will be over faster than a dinner. If they do, then I won't have to hear what I'm doing going out with a rich kid when I know better." Or wonder why she was suddenly concerned about what she was wearing or how it would look to a date.

"Sounds like a good plan. But hey, she doesn't mind your hanging around with a rich kid so far, has she?"

"She doesn't think of you like that. You're not slumming for the usual reasons we see rich kids down here." She gave him a faintly apologetic look. "She's decided you're harmless."

He giggles. "Mostly harmless. Seems I can't pull off the 'dangerous' look unless I am actually in the act of beating the daylights out of someone."

"The woman with great instincts thinks we're getting in some extra study tonight. Although, if your Uncle Jed tries to pull a fast one on her, she'll know." Zoe grinned at GK.

She snorted. There was little doubt that GK's uncle was a nice man. She'd made no bones about her protectiveness of her mother. "Good to know."

"Hungry? Doesn't look like we're gonna get any more action tonight. We can hit the all-night diner. Maybe we'll get lucky and somebody will try and rob it."
