(Not Quite) Hell on Wheels (open)
Huntress opened the throttle on her bike and increased her speed. The men on bikes ahead of her had been pulling away, but she wasn't going to let them get away. They were part of a gang who were pushing drugs to middle-school kids and Maria wasn't about to let them go anywhere but to the land of pain and jail. Preferably in that order.

She had been following them for a few days to learn their supply and distribution routes so she could bring down the whole gang and not just two little fishes. Tonight they were heading toward Metropolis to meet up with a fellow member who dealt in Metropolis. She gunned the throttle and closed the gap between them.

Huntress pulled up along side of one and grabbed her crossbow. She aimed and fire, the small arrow going into the front tire of the bike. The front tire deflated and the bike flipped, the back going up over the front. The man on it went flying off and hit the ground hard. He wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Huntress kept after the guy on the other bike and pulled up along side of him. She took aim, but he swerved toward her and she had to swerve to avoid him hitting her. She straightened out and half stood up, putting her weight on her hands. She put her right knee on the seat and kicked out with her left foot at the man on the other bike.

He wobbled a bit before losing control. His bike started to skid and the rear wheel hit hers. Not good. So not good. Her bike started to skid and there was only one thing left to do. Huntress jumped from the skidding bike and went flying through the air. She tried to adjust her position to make a somewhat reasonable landing, but she had been driving too fast for that. She hit the ground hard and with some bone breakage.

"Ow. Double ow." There wasn't a part of her body that didn't hurt and she was going to lie here and enjoy the nice hard ground for a bit.

"Ahhh, fair enough. I suppose some things are the same across universes."

"I guess. Though you said there was one that was very different? How so?"

"Some people who came through for a while, and teamed up with us. Few common touchpoints. They still had New York, mostly the same countries... but no Gotham, no Metropolis, none of the same heroes or villains."

"No Gotham? No Metropolis? How weird." Maria shook her head. "I can't imagine a world where they don't exist."

"And no Batman, no Superman, no JLA... they have their own heroes and villains. The Avengers, the X-Men... their big bad is someone named Dr. Doom... very different. I had trouble with it too, but I spent a lot of time talking to them. They were heroes on their world, but none of them had any equivalents here."

"That's so weird," she said. "I can't imagine a world without those folks. Dr. Doom? Really? What is it with criminals and really bad names?"

"Yeah, like I said, I couldn't either... but we talked quite a bit. Their gods are allowed to get involved in things still. One of them was the daughter of Thor, apparently one of the major heroes in that world. As for Dr. Doom... apparently the guy's actual name is Doctor Victor von Doom... hence, Dr. Doom."

"Okay that makes a little more sense," she said. "Are things that bad there that the gods are still allowed to interfere?" She smiled a little. "Was this daughter of Thor the one you were enamored of?" she asked since he didn't mention any of the other visitors.

"Yeah." He admits, a little less cheerful than in the back and forth, but no cause to deny it. "On both counts. They have it rough. Normal people don't like their heroes very much. And she and I got pretty close while she was here. We helped them follow one of their enemies, who had taken control of Doomsday while he was here... then they went home."

She reached out and gave his hand a squeeze and the released it. It was a small simple gesture. "Sounds like they have it rough."

"Wait a minute. Someone had enough hutzpah and was powerful enough to put Doomsday on a leash? What kind of mad lunatic was this?"

"She had her father's hammer, which made the difference, ultimately. As for the other dude... once people got past Doomsday, he was powerful, but we had significant numbers between us and them."

"It will hurt, sure, but wouldn't it be worth it just to see her face one more time or hold her in your arms for one more night? Hear her voice whispered in your ear in the darkness? I would give a lot to see the people I love just one more time no matter how much it would hurt me after."

"I don't know. Is it worth putting my life on hold for a hope, a hope of maybe one more day? I would hope she would move on too, live her life. Some people from other dimensions visit again... we've seen that... others don't. On one hand, I'd like to see her again, on another... its probably best I don't."

"Don't put your life on hold for a maybe, but if you do see her again and the situation is right just...don't let it pass you by. Promise me Jon Kent that if the chance does come up you'll take it and be happy while you can."

"Oh, that was never a question. If things change, then we'll see. But her world needs her, and she can't operate here... she's a goddess... and I'm needed here. I won't let it pass in any case. But I'm also not going to count on a longshot maybe that we already determined can't work long term."

"Only a Kent would fall in love with a goddess," she said. "Good. Don't let the chance pass you by if it does come up, but don't let any other chances pass you by either."

She patted his hand.

"Otherwise I'd be forced to kick your ass."

"I won't. You never know what will happen, but I'm not counting on them coming back or anything either. And if other things come up... well, we'll see. I'm not really ready to start dating again yet and I know it, but eventually."

"First loves, this is a first love, right? You'll never forget it and they're hard to get over. Someday some bodacious babe will catch your eye and you'll know you're ready. Until then, you kick bad guy butt and hang out with your friends. And if one of those friends just happens to be some incredibly amusing girl who has few brain to mouth filters, then all the better."

He can't help but grin, just a little, again. "It was, yes. And... there's a couple cute girls around. I'd never had a lot to do with dating before, but my eyes are definitely a little more open. Besides, you are kind of cute. If I ever was going to abuse my x-ray vision..." he teases.

Maria blushed a little, then she was back to form. "Mr. Kent, you don't need to abuse your x-ray vision. I'll gladly show you what you want to see." She stood up and fumbled with the ties on her sweats. She wondered how long it would take him to turn away or stop her.

He laughs. "I was kidding, but if you're going to insist, since we seem to keep coming back to this, I'm not going to stop you." Calling her bluff... which may or may not work, but at least now he's not the only one blushing.
