All Hallow's Eve
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

Thomas can see her suspicion, and he's trying not to laugh. The truth would just make it worse. Oh well, he can wait for Maria to vouch for him.

He shakes her hand. "Nice to meet you Jazz. And who isn't a fan of Halloween? We'd never get to dress up otherwise!" Okay, he does every night but not like she needs to know that.

"Want a pez?" He pulls out the gun and shoots one into his mouth to demonstrate.

Maria, who had decided to dress up as a cheerleader, came quietly up behind Thomas and put her hands over his eyes. "Guess who?"

Thomas laughs. "Let me guess, the big boss lady is in the building? If you are I have pez. "

Jazz had stiffened the instant he drew his gun, but had relaxed the fraction of a second later when she could tell by it's build that it was fake. She laughs at his comment about not dressing up, but shakes her her head at the offer of pez.

"That's okay, thanks though."

She was too damn smart to take something shaped like a pill from anyone. She grins a little and relaxes at Maria's antics. He's not someone she needs to be on guard against too much if Maria was playing around.

"Ooooh! Pez!" Maria removed her hands and snatched the pez gun out of his hand. "I'm such a push over for candy. Halloween is my favorite day of the year."

Thomas shrugs at Jazz's lack of interest in pez. Hey, more for him. Well that's until a certain someone decided to snatch his pez gun.

"Looks like it's a good thing I came prepared. I'm a cowboy that's packing candy instead of heat" He pulls out a pouch from his pocket and opens it to reveal chocolate coins.

"Nice costume, are the pom poms in your desk?"

Jazz nodded in agreement with Maria and gathered up her decorations taking them to the side to finish like a proper assistant would. She still isn't sure who this Thomas is, though Maria's favor went a long way to soothing her suspicions about him.

As Maria's assistant (and through some not so legal channels) she was familiar with most of the people her boss did business with out of curiosity and concern for her safety, but she'd never even heard of a Thomas. Which meant he was either a personal acquaintance, very likely given Maria's personality, or there was business going on that Jazz hadn't been apprised of, not unusual, but unusual that she hadn't heard about it through other channels if that was the case.

"Thanks. They are. Hey Jazz, have you met Thomas? Thomas Kyle, this is my assistant Jazz Todd. Jazz this is Thomas. He's...family."

"We've introduced ourselves. She's not a fan of pez." He gives Jazz a knowing wink. Smart girl not trusting so easily. Even if it does mean turning down candy.

Thomas bites into a chocolate coin to hide a laugh. Yeah "family" is probably the best way to go. It's way easier to say that than alternate-universe uncle. He doesn't think that will go over too well.

"Speaking of which...if you're going to monopolize my pez gun at least shoot some my way."

"Ah, nice to meet you then Thomas."

Maria said he was family, and that was enough for her. The Waynes were strange, eccentric in only the way wealth and connections could let you get away with, but pleasant enough. Certainly they were cleaner than most of the other wealthy in Gotham.

"Not a fan of candy shaped like pills, but chocolate money is definitely something I can get behind." She dances by stringing another Halloween garland and snags one of his coins.
