Saying goodbye (open)
The winter wind had a sharp bite to it and the cold rain made the day that much more miserable. The small canopy set up over the grave site did little ward off the rain. The weather fit Maria's mood perfectly. The graveside service had just wrapped up and the coffin had been lowered into the frozen ground. The other mourners were heading to the warmth of their waiting vehicles.

Maria didn't seem to notice the wind and the cold rain as she stood as still as the many statues that dotted the graveyard. Her mother was dead. Victim of bombing. It happened too close to the breakout at Arkham to be coincidence. Maria knew one of the escapees was responsible, she just had to find out which one.

She stared at the coffin sitting in the ground.

In the back of her mind she knew Bruce and her father were waiting in the car, but she just couldn't move.

Barbie was there, of course. For reasons of Aunt Helena.

There wasn't much she could think of to say, since this wasn't the time for platitudes.

There were some thing you couldn't believe until it was right in front of you. This was one of those things. To Keith, he had refused to believe it when somebody told him that his Aunt Helena had died. As much as he knew that nobody joked about those things in his family, he refused to believe it. But today, he watched they lowered the coffin.

It seemed like even the weather wasn't going to give her a break. If anything, Aunt Helena deserved the sun in the sky while she was buried. But no. She was given this dreary, unwelcome weather.

His mother returned to their car. Lucky for Keith, he had an umbrella all to himself. There was something he needed to do before he went back to the car. He walked over to Maria, and used his umbrella to keep the rain from her. Not much he could do about the wind, though.

He was silent the whole time. Maria was his friend, and he couldn't stand to let the rain beat down on her more than this already had.

Eventually Maria came back to the world and started moving. The fact there was an umbrella over her head didn't go unnoticed. She kissed Keith's cheek in thanks.

Thomas had told Dick and his father to feel free to head to the car, he'd stand with her for a bit longer.

His mother was essentially dead, and there was no way he'd visit this version of her. He could sympathize, and knew that if his mother had died this way, there would be nothing to save to person who'd done this.

Thomas waited for some time before gently taking her arm to try and encourage her back to the car. "We'll find who did it," he whispered to her.

Maria didn't want to move at first, but a small voice in the back of her brain told her she had to. She gave Keith a kiss on the cheek and then allowed Thomas to walk her to the car.

"I know." Her voice was quiet, calm, almost as cold as the winter air.

"Then you decide what to do with them," he whispered, face turned away from the car so there'd be no lip-reading. Bruce would be against it but...he could honestly say he'd cover Maria if she wanted more permanent retribution. He'd do it if it was his mother killed, he knew that much.

Maria answered with a nod. She knew what she was going to do when she had told her mother had been killed. Bruce knew what she had been thinking and had spoken to her as soon as she returned to the mansion. She of course nodded in agreement about not killing, but she had already decided her path and wasn't going to change her mind.

Dinah was there, of course. Maria and Helena and all were family. But she just couldn't believe Aunt Hel was gone. Seemed... wrong, somehow. Like the universe was suddenly a quieter place without her.

Her mother was there too, of course, with her father. With all these different people working to find the ones responsible, she knew it wouldn't be long before they had a chance to take someone down.

Miss Helena? Gone? It weren't right. Weren't right at all. Not from somethin' like a bomb. Crazy broads like her went out fightin'.

Her father was stone-faced and grim, her mother openly weeping. There'd probably be a lot of alcohol consumed tonight.

Evan stood close to where Cat was at. He hadn't known Miss Helena that well, but he had a few fond memories of the woman. The whole thing stunk of why he hated Gotham so much, but..it also emphasized why Gotham needed help.

His dads stood close by. Evan could see a few tears run down the original Savant's face, while Creote held a look of stoic sadness.

Funerals were always depressing for Avia, a reminder of how very fragile most life was, and a stark reminder of how many she'd likely attend in her immortal lifetime. Her own mother had spoken highly of Maria's, and Avia had been impressed the times she'd met her.

Barda was a somber affair, leaning upon Scott, grimacing over the injustice of it all, that such a warrior should die like that.

Tomas gave Maria space on this one. His parents had both tried to kill the bats at one time or another, and their relationship, such as it was, remained up in the air. But he's still present where she can find him if she wants, or go her own way and talk to him later.

He didn't know the woman, at least not the same way as most of these people - but its a matter of paying respects. And whatever else came of the relations, he and his respected Helena, and all the batclan.

Maria was on her way to the car with Thomas when she saw Tomas. "I'll be back."

She didn't wait for Thomas to respond, but walked over to Tomas. "Thank you for coming."

Maria nodded. "Thank you." She felt as fragile as glass and would shatter with the smallest thing. Seeing him made her feel a little stronger.

"It means a lot you're here."

Maria hugged him and just held on, not letting him go. His arms were strong and warm and grounded her. She wanted to sink into the warmth he offered and stay there. This was the first time since she had been told of her mother's death that she felt something other than emptiness and coldness inside of her.

She eventually released him and dropped a kiss on his cheek.

He holds her for as long as she hangs on. "I'm guessing you're with family tonight. Let me know if you want me to come over to your place any time this week to help out, ok?"

"For a little while," she said. "But I'm going back to my place tonight." Maria didn't feel like dealing with people, but mostly she didn't want Bruce watching her like a hawk. She knew he would be because he didn't want her going after whomever did this and kill them. Which was exactly what she was planning to do.

Did she want him to come over tonight? A part said yes. It would nice to be able to have someone there, but a part also said no. Human contact was like steel wool against skin right now.

Maria found herself nodding. "Sure. Sounds...like a plan." Good wasn't in her vocabulary at the moment. Nothing would be good again until her mother's killer was in the ground.

He can see the resolve in her eyes. He knows it well. And he knows Batman will be watching her like a hawk right now. He shouldn't ask. He does anyway.

"You want us to look into it?"

"Alright." he agrees - making a note to have his sister and Iota checking anyway, so they don't lose any clues. Things disappear fast, and he wants a head start if she does want a hand.

"Take care of yourself, and family. I'll be by tonight."

He tries to be as reassuring as he can. Reassuring is not his strong point.

Revenge and blood, however... those are old business. He's on the phone not long after she and the car are out of sight.

His father always spoke very highly of Helena. He would have rather been out figuring out who did this and why. But there were respects to be given.

His father was there as well with their Sensei saying their goodbyes.

Mike didn't really know Helena that well but was that to support his friend. He couldn't imagine what Maria was feeling or going through. But he was going to be there for her if she needed it though he was going to stay in the back for now.

Marcus wasn't very close to Helena and hated Gotham a lot. But Maria was nice and her mom didn't deserve this especially from what he had heard. Plus he knew what it was like to lose a mom.
