So it struck me down
Jane didn't like worrying people. She especially did not like to worry those who she had let herself get close to. Of course this meant trying to avoid talking about the fact she never slept undisturbed for the most part. It meant not thinking about how much she wanted to know things that were pretty much impossible to find out.

Eventually Jane moves from where she had exiled herself to. The training room she had set up for herself always faintly smelt like sweat. There was also a faint smell that caught Jane's attention then she sighed.

"Shoulda wrapped my hands," she grumbles twisting her writs to work out the cramps. She had pounded the hell out of the punching bag and had apparently hurt one knuckle while being so aggravated from the nightmares that had struck her. The blond grumbled to herself then moved to go wash her hands off in one of the bathrooms. The light burned her eyes as she flicked it on and she winced as she got a look at herself.

"I look like shit," she mumbled not wanting to wake her lover who should still be asleep. Not like her. She should really try and get some rest. If she got some rest she would look and feel much better.

He does know this and he tickles for a bit before he stops and just settles with her in his arms.

"I could die while I'm gone, Jane. In case that happens, you should know that I knew there was something about you from the moment we met on that rooftop. Of course, the way you took out those thugs was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

But...you've been there for me almost more than anyone else in my life. I don't want to lose that. I want to come back to you when this is over, if you'll let me.

Because I love you." he says.

Jane was staring up at him she knew he was serious after he stopped tickling her. She smiled up at him then listened to him.

Oh. Well even with all her skills she hadn't known that.

"You better come back," she says firmly. "Because I love you too. I was sure you knew that though. I...Knew it when you ended up on my door step. Not consciously. But you scared me."

She looks at him seriously. "It was worse than my nightmares. I hate seeing people I love hurt."

	"Well, not only will I come back, but I'll come back in one piece, Jane. I don't like seeing you scared or upset, like tonight." Robert says. He's silent for a moment before he decides to ask his next question. "Jane, what happens in your dreams? "Good," Jane says firmly with a solid look at him. She would be very upset if he was hurt.

She bites her lip then decides to try and explain. "I'm never quite sure what it is. Everything is this--- dark eerie blue. I know I'm cold. I can't move. Can't control anything. And... It's like. It's like I know something terrible is happening. But I can't move and no matter how hard I try I can't fight it."

This is the part she hates thinking about. "And I've seen others there. I know they were real and .... A lot like me. And I can hear them being put down. Something was wrong with them. Some of them aren't strong or good enough. So they had to go. And I can't help them either. I'm just as helpless as them."

This is starting to upset her again. She doesn't like thinking about it.

Robert sees that this is upsetting Jane, but his curiosity is also piqued. The Jane described her dream, the less it sounds like one. He is no expert, but he has a hunch.

"Jane? You have been having this same dream for a long time now, right? What if this isn't just a nightmare, but a real memory trying to break through? Sometimes our minds use our dreams during sleep to tell us things our waking minds won't think about. And you, my love, are the definition of a workaholic." Robert says.

"Have you ever thought of writing down your dreams? You might give yourself some clues that you haven't picked up on prior to this." he says.

"Things similar to it, yes. I always thought this was connected to my past. I just can't remember anything before I woke up in that shipping yard." She glances up at him and nods.

"I have a box. I used to write what I remembered down." She continued to just stay curled against him. "Now mostly I just write down what I see. The idea of forgetting everything I've experienced is.... Scary."

Robert nods and smiles, trying to offer Jane comfort. He was offered little comfort growing up, so he's still not great with it as an adult, but he tries for Jane.

"There is definitely a starting point, Jane. If these people are still watching you, they may want to make contact. Or maybe they already have..." Robert says, thinking.

"Have any of your cases lately been odd? Like, something that didn't add up or a client who didn't want to meet? Or seemed eager to meet with you?" he asks.

	Jane nodded. "Missing person case. Couldn't find records on the person they wanted me to locate." Which had been very weird. "hen I contacted them about it.... The number I had? Wasn't a real number." She looks very unhappy with this information. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	"Yeah. They put down a deposit. Which I remember because it was higher than the standard going rate. It was through a money order though so not sure how much that will help," Jane admits the last part with a frown. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	"How long ago did this happen? Any other cases like it?" he asks, a picture forming in his mind. Having a detective for a girlfriend (is that what she is?) definitely makes a person ask more questions than normal. "If these people exist, they're watching you and closely. 	"About a month go. I haven't gotten any other odd cases." She rubs her nose. "The oddest thing I ever came across was a journal that predicted my exsistance from the 1930s. Jane chuckled and shrugged. "I should ice it. And now you know why I eat so much. I exercise when I need to force myself to sleep. It ain't healthy but it works."

She stares at her hand. "Hell. If I do end up getting pushed into the costumed business like I feel like I've been since last October... I might actually sleep better, ya know. I'll be too busy to remember whatever it is that has me actin' like this."

She looks back up at him. "What do you think? I'd rather not stand out while helpin' out my friends..."

This is a big subject change.

"I think you'd make a great vigilante, Jane. But you sound like you know a few already." he grins.

"It's a tough life and people aren't always going to thank you for saving their lives. The question is: are you comfortable stepping out of the shadows and getting more involved?

You can't have any fear or doubt in your mind if you're going to be on the streets at night. I, for one, would love to patrol with you sometime, though." he says.

"I'd believe that one, with as many scrapes as you get into and come out of in one piece." Robert laughs, remembering the first time he saw her start a bar-fight.

He really thought he would have to kill someone that night, but Jane handled herself well. The only thing better than that was after the bar-fight. He grinned at the memory.

Her mention of Kestrel earned her a quizzical look.

"So what you meant to say was that I now need to go put an arrow in Kestrel before I leave so that he doesn't come after you for baiting him. Did I get that right?" he asks.

	Jane's eyes crinkle with amusement. She obviously enjoyed every little scrape she got into. Hard to say why she did, it was just another quirk. Oh now Jane is laughing. "I won't be out there until you get back. And... I know he'll eventually come after me. Remember what we did to him? I know if I were him I wouldn't forget. I just plan on being ready." 	"A costume makes sense Body armor, after all," Jane says with a faint smile. She knows he'll probably stare if he sees what she plans on wearing. "Of course I'll run. He isn't someone I could face without back up. He's too.... Tough," Jane tries to reassure him. "Hell. If it comes down to it, I'll run to my friends. They know about him." I'm not trying to take over your life, Jane. I swear." Robert says, trying to reign in the desire to protect someone who, in truth, saved /his/ life when he was nearly killed by a murdering psycho.

"You're going to be fine and I'm going to come back with the information you need, and then you can tell me how you want to handle it from there. Does that sound fair?" he asks with a smile.

Jane relaxes a great deal. She had not been happy when he seemed to over react. She had been used to taking care of herself. As much as she loves him, she doesn't want to have to prove she can take care of herself.

"It does." She leans in to kiss his cheek. "I'll take care of myself. And you better take care of yourself, Mr Queen."

She smirks. "I don't want to have to get stern with you."

"I promise I'll do my best to stay safe, since I know that if I get hurt, you'll nurse me back to health, then beat me up for getting hurt in the first place." Robert chuckles.

Though, he's pretty sure Jane would do just that.

"And the last thing a guy wants to tell people is that his girlfriend beat him up." Robert jokes.

A year ago, Robert would never have made jokes with anyone, much less someone he could say he was in love with. Jane's presence was a calming influence on him. He didn't feel like he had to be on guard at all times with her, like he did most people.
