Generation Hexed
Three years ago, Xarus Tepes, son and slayer of Dracula, united the warring vampire sects under a new banner. They followed his new vision for the future, a future of vampires empowered in a fashion the world had never seen. A melding of vampire and mutant blood, ushered in through fire and blood. In another world, he might have only sent forth one suicide bomber, in San Fransisco, but in this one, he sent many. Overnight, across the United States, the ranks of the vampire nation swelled, bringing mutants and other superhumans into the fold. Some resisted their new natures, many did not. With the aid of the X-Men, Dracula eventually was restored and then resumed control of the vampire nations and restored order, but the swell in the ranks represented a fundamental shift in power amongst the supernatural community. Almost overnight, other camps began responding. Otherworld tested its pact with the British Isles, soliciting humans to serve as scions of fey magic. Tribes of lycanthropes went on offensive strikes into isolated communities to spread their own condition. Things that lurked in dark places offered more power in exchange for fewer souls.

Now, the world has a new face. Fields of wild magic dotted across the globe render technology moot within their territory, and magic is nearly commonplace. Sentinels and Hulkbusters were repurposed and reshaped into magic-powered golems and armors of hideous might. The world has become the stuff of the Brothers' tales, before Disney and modern media got hold of them. Cities run the gamut from overgrown by restored wilderness, to reshaped into gleaming spires of otherworldly beauty, to ruins.

Where and when the Exiles arrive, it is night by all appearances, but there are no stars, and what appears to be the moon high above is featureless and pristine. By all appearances, they are in what was once a suburban neighborhood, but the homes now are either falling apart, or fortified and bearing runes and hex marks across their structures. Swathes of thornbushes have replaced flower-beds and lawns, and spikes of iron ring some of the properties, seemingly the remains of automobiles, torn apart by bare hands and claws.

"Gee, Mister Valentine. There sure has been a lot of monsters over all this time," Gwenny remarked as they were transported.

"Literal monsters, even," Dory agrees, ignoring the homesick twinge he's beginning to become accustomed to whenever someone teleports him. "Though I guess we wouldn't be sent to a universe where there wasn't some sort of problem going on."

San Francisco, if either of them had ever seen it before, would pale in comparison to what they see now. 'The city by the bay' now consumed the bay, sprawling, and with towers extending towards the sky and down into the waters. The air is clean, and the sun is shining bright with only a few. The human population is staggering, compared to nearly anywhere else in what remains of America. Everything looks carefully maintained and to be operating like clockwork.

And there is The Wall. A massive construct encircling the entirety of the expanded city, and swinging off into the ocean. The island of Utopia, the former Asteroid M raised from the ocean floor, and supported by the pillar-city of New Atlantis, sits at the center of the ring. It's not just the size or apparent solidness of it that strikes those who look at it, it practically thrums with energy, both magical and technological. Queen Illyana of Limbo, Lady Gwynn of Avalon, Forge, Madison Jeffries, and James Bradley, among others, wasted no effort in one of the greatest works of their age. It was, quite literally, the last barrier for most of humanity.

Every half mile along the top of the wall are sentry posts, each with at least half a dozen figures floating or standing above it, more than half of their number crackling with some kind of energy.

The exceptions are the posts at opposite ends from one another. One facing in towards the mainland, one facing due West into the ocean. Each of them has only one guard. A slight man with glasses sits facing the sea, holding a fishing rod, while a tall man with black hair in braids and reddish skin mans the landward post.

Gwenny is a California girl, so they're finally in familiar territory for her.
"Yeah. It just gets... tiring. But we've got to do it, for Dad and Davy and your fiancee."

For a very, very special definition of 'familiar'.

Still, she'll approach the first sentry they can reach, saluting a little with a glowing hand. "Hi."

"It does," Dory agrees, hand twitching toward the ring in his pocket before he catches himself. "And we do. Best get started; the sooner we're done, the sooner we'll eventually be able to go home."

Last time Dory had been in California, he'd found out that the Skrull throneworld had been eaten by Galactus and that the Empire he despised for his mother's death had fallen into chaos and disarray. He'd avoided San Francisco, though -- at the time, he'd been trying to avoid anyone on speaking terms with the Avengers.

Gwenny steps up to take point and he automatically falls back into a flanking/support position, schooling his face to neutrality. It's better if one of them leads instead of both of them talking over each other.

And Gwenny will continue standing there, knowing Mr. Valentine has her back, when the long-haired man asks "What is the meaning of this?"

He's got glowing hands, too. And glowying eyes, with something bright and brittle behind that ... Gwenny doesn't like looking this gentleman in his very confusing -- and confused -- eyes.

But she does anyway. "We're here to talk. We want to help." Gwenny thinks about it for a moment, about what this place must be like, in a situation like this. "And we need help, too." It's true in its way. She's not embarrassed to admit it.

The flickery-handed, flickery-eyed gentleman seems to have warring instincts. "But what...?"

"Our situation's a little complicated," Dory chimes in, voice dry. "But we don't mean anyone harm, and we won't be offended if you toss us up the ladder for someone else to deal with."

There's a sharp whistle, followed by a yellow and black blur being flung from one of the other towers towards Exodus. It latches onto his back, managing the impact without any apparent damage to either of them.

"Easy there, Paris. Scans are showing them clear." She looks at the newcomers. "Cut him some slack. We haven't had any legit arrivals in weeks. Everyone's on edge. I'm Jubilee. Who are you?"

"No offense taken. Golden Girl. Gwenny Lou Sabuki. What were you scanning?"

Dory had automatically reached out to pull Gwenny backward when he heard the whistling and spotted the blur, but he relaxed -- a little -- when the situation resolved itself. The scaled plates that had been forming on his back under his shirt dissolved back into his normal skin.

"Green Marvel," he added. "Dorian Valentine. Excuse us, we are significantly not from around here."

"We were scanning everything we could, and that's a lot, believe me. But you two come up clean. Most definitely not human, but close enough for horseshoes and magical post-apo-- post-civilization crises." Jubilee tip-toes around a particular choice of words, given whose back she is clinging to at the moment.

"Come on down and we'll let the folks in charge give you the official welcome."

Gwenny quirks an eyebrow. "Well, golly, I appreciate that it's close enough and all, and thank you for having us, but, I'm still human. And Mr. Valentine isn't not human just because he's a mutant."

Behind Gwenny, Dory cringes internally. This isn't the time he'd have picked to have a conversation about his status as human-or-otherwise -- one, because he wouldn't have picked any time for that conversation; and two, because having a teammate find out he's been lying to them isn't exactly going to endear him to the people they're trying to influence now.

"The X-Men are mutants, Golden Girl," he says, thinking fast. "All of them, at least where I'm from. Maybe we're coming off as 'not human but close enough' because we're not native to this universe." He smiles at the two people who are. "That sounds great. I hope we're not interrupting them in the middle of anything?"

"You're not vampires, werewolves we don't know, demons, fairies, or otherwise possessed. Good enough." Jubilee manages to shrug one shoulder as Exodus starts descending to the ground with her, beckoning for the others to follow.

Once they set down, Jubilee leads them directly to Utopia's command center. "Hey fearless leaders, new arrivals." She jerks her thumb over her shoulder at the two. "Dimensional refugees in need of help, but saying they're here to help us as well."

Gwenny explained their concerns to the nice old gentleman, and that they had both Mr. Valentine's very useful abilities and potential backup later.

He was a little wary at first, which was totally understandable -- especially so when Gwenny managed to observantly notice when his sleeve slipped. It was hard enough to trust people after some of the things that happened in Sandy Flats. If she was this old gentleman, she'd have had a hard time ever trusting anybody again.

But they worked it out.

Dory lets Gwenny take the lead again, trying not to be too disturbed by the fact he was in the same room as an alternate version of Billy's grandfather.

It's still weird, but at least he's had practice wearing a poker face.
