Hard Work Hardly Works, or Does It?
So... yeah, okay. They'd still never had time to address the whole dating versus boyfriend/girlfriend issue yet, but Mason was content to let that wait a little longer. He'd never dated before.

But it was Valentine's Day, so the girl gets romance. That's just how it goes. He'd tried calling Dad to get some advice, but Mom had wrestled the phone away from him to stop him talking, and before he could build a new one, told Mason just to be himself. Which didn't help at all. So, he'd set to work on his own.

He'd automatically decided that something handmade was best. Of course he'd cashed in one of the vouchers from Jordie to set up dinner reservations, after some careful prodding in conversation to figure out what kind of food suited Marrina best, but he wanted do something on top of that. Money was money, and could buy very nice things, but he wanted to show the effort himself.

He'd torn apart a greeting card that played music, "Just what I Needed", to extract the audio component, and inserted it into one he made himself. Well, that was after a dozen or so papercuts and a lot of aborted attempts. (He wished he could reconstitute paper products, but his powers still didn't seem to be able to crack the organic/inorganic barrier. Oh well, that's what recycling bins were for.) It was a rather nice, if simple, card (he can't draw), brightly colored with a mosaic heart of various bits of construction paper glued on the front and with a brief note inside.

Marrina,

You are a very sweet, strong, and intelligent member of the team, and much more attractive and awesome than I ever expected anyone willing to go out with me would be.

XOXO
Mason

P.S. I'd like you even if you weren't a princess or a superhero.

He came within a hair of putting in 'Love, Mason', but chickened out just a little. He doesn't want to be too aggressive.

The homemade chocolate had come out well, according to the test pieces he'd sectioned off from the main assortment. Only a few burns, and no major kitchen disasters.

Finally, the 'hard' gift. A metal jewelry box lined with velvet (okay, so he couldn't make the velvet himself, he had to cut up some from a fabric shop). He'd used acid etching to decorate the surface of it, and again came out with only a couple minor burns, and scratches from the edges before he got them smoothed out. Now granted, his mutant powers made handmaking the jewelry box a little less of an undertaking than it would be otherwise, but he was quite pleased with how it came out. Inside the box were a pair of spiral shell earrings he'd plated with metal.

And so, he knocks at Marrina's door at the appointed time, dressed in the nicest jacket he has, arms full of his efforts, hands partially bandaged, and ready to take her out to dinner.

"Plodex thing, actually," Marrina said. "Like my mother."

She blushed a little. "Cheese-flavored popcorn."

"Yours?"

"The bacon explosion, which is the reason I don't know if I'm going to make fifty. It may be mankind's single greatest self-destructive achivement."

He pauses, for dramatic effect.

"It is our way of looking to terrorists, and saying, "There is nothing you can do to us... that we have not and will not already do to ourselves.'"

He blinks, his brain catching up with him. "Oh... right. I wasn't sure if just tossing the same question back counted." He clears his throat and thinks up another one.

"If you could live out any book you've read, what book and who would you be?"

"Hmmm," Marrina mused. "Good question."

She blushed again. "Actually, I mostly just read these really trashy romance novels... so I don't know if I'd really want to be in any of those."

I would

Stop that!

Mason manages a laugh. "I don't think I could be in those either. I'm not built like those guys on the covers with their nipples showing."

He smiles. "You're a warrior princess though, and more important, you're you, so you're too good for that kind of stuff anyway." He grins at her.

Warrior princess? Break out the chainmail biki--

Stop that!

"Eh, you're built just fine," Marrina said. "Couldn't wear the uniform if you weren't."

She shrugged. "I don't think I've really processed the princess thing yet, outside of a few jokes."

Her time for a question. "How about you, book-wise?"

Mason blushes up to his ears at that. "There you go being really nice again..." He mumbles, clearing his throat. "Thanks."

He nods at the princess bit. "You're still you. Nothing's changed except some jewelry, bragging rights, and maybe an undersea vacation to cash in to do the whole exploring your roots thing."

He thinks over the book thing. "Daystar, from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I like the whole series, because everyone's really aware of how fantastic their world is, and they do the sensible thing in most cases. No eating things they shouldn't, no drinking things they shouldn't, no pulling anything out of anything they shouldn't. That sort of stuff."

New question. "Tacos or burgers?"

"Don't think I've read those," Marrina said. "I did read the Harry Potter books, back when the came out. Pretty good stuff. But those sound good too."

She considered the question. "Burgers, definitely. Don't think I've had much Mexican food."

Mason snorts. "Tacos aren't any more Mexican than pizza's really Italian anymore. I like barbeque pulled pork tacos." He grins. "I'll ask Mel to help me with Dad's recipe for pulled pork sometime."

He leans forward, resting his chin on his hand and just enjoying looking at her.

This right here? This is a good moment. Mason is just going to live in this moment for a bit.

"Your turn."

It is a very good moment. And Mason is very sweet. She hadn't dated much, though she had, but here was a genuinely nice guy she liked being with.

"Favorite drink?"

"Ginger ale, as long as they use real ginger, not the artificial stuff." He smiles, hoping she didn't catch him staring too much.

There's a clearing of a throat as a waiter is there. Mason pretends to be able to make sense of the menu, then nods to Marrina. "Yes... I think I'll go with what we discussed earlier. Why don't you go ahead and order, Marrina?" He does his best to sound like this is totally planned.

Marrina manages to place her own order for a sea food dish, and orders the chicken for Mason. Her French isn't perfect, but better than Mason's probably would have been.

Waiter safely on his way, she turned back to Mason. "Your turn, Mason."

"Aww, that's too bad. I don't have a real bike yet, but Jordie and I went dirt-biking all the time."

Mason grins. "Promise to give you a ride as soon as I get a bike." A pause. "Even if your standards go up before then and we're not dating." He laughs, semi-serious, but still good-natured about it.

"I don't have to, Jordie tells me I'm short all the time." Mason grins and does the little drum-snare with his fingers on the edge of the table softly.

He shrugs and leans back in his seat. "I'm not trying to be negative, really, it's just that Jordie was always so popular with girls, and I didn't know how to talk to them at all. I mean, obviously I got a little over that. It's a lot easier when there's fewer of them around, just you, Mel, and Emily." He grins sheepishly. "You're just a lot prettier than I expected the first girl I dated to be, and you're smart, and really nice. Jordie... didn't really have the best track record with girls so far as smarts."

He coughs into his hand. "I guess what I'm trying to say, without derailing or sounding stalker-ish, is that I like dating you, and being your friend. I'd like to keep dating you, and not other people, if that's alright." He pauses.

"That would probably sound a lot more charming if I hadn't already pointed out there's only really two other girls around. Seriously though, if I ever seem like I'm putting myself down, it's cuz I don't want you to feel like you have to put up with me or I'll go all moody. I'm tough."
