Martyred Saint's Day
Marlow had never celebrated Valentine's Day. She knew about it and why, but it didn't really register. There was extra chocolate around in brightly wrapped foils, and heart shaped cookies available in the kitchen, but given how much the compound residents ate every day the extra goodies didn't last long enough to give her a clue they were for a reason other than the usual one.

She thought the valentine Zoey gave her was lovely and told the little girl so. It was on the mirror in her bedroom along with the Christmas card Zoey had given her. In return, she drew on Zoey's cheek with her fingertip and bit of magic to give her a sparkly red heart that would fade within a few hours.

"Luv, you're spoiling me. Cookies would be great and I'm completely yours." He was still smiling and he gave her a wink.

She retrieved the cookies from their hiding spot on a top shelf, far above her head and right in Svalin's reach. A bit of magic floated the container to her waiting hands. "You shouldn't say that lightly to a sorceress," she chided in an amused voice. "We take such things seriously."

"I like to live dangerously," he said. He grinned. "Besides, I wouldn't mind being subservient to you."

She laughed, possibly the first full laugh out of her since she arrived on Earth. "You're in luck, I haven't had any experience with a minion."

"So tell me," he said as he grabbed a cookie. "What does being your minion entail?" He winked, waggled his eyebrows and then bit into the cookie.

"Hrm..." Marlow tapped the side of her mug with a fingertip. "Aside from my errands and running interference when one of the gods takes it in their heads to do something that disturbs the rest of the compound, I would require my morning chocolate to be the perfect color, my afternoon tea be served with fresh cookies, and all the tags in my shirts removed promptly."

"That doesn't sound too taxing. Anything else?"

"Don't say that until you get between the gods and their meals," she warned with a grin. "Then there are the demons. This part of the country seems to attract them. I could use a minion with power to draw from when they attack again."

"Well, luv, if demons attack, I'll need my power to fend them off," he said. Unfortunately outside of England he was an above average sorcerer and needed all the power he could get.

"Then I guess you won't do as a minion." She did well enough on her own. The power surges always seemed to come at just the right time. "I didn't even get to the part of running my bath or fluffing my pillows." That bit was drawn directly from the last book she'd read.

"I'll still do those," Quinn grinned. "Just say the word. Do I get to wash your back too?"

"Are you skilled with a sponge?" Marlow asked before the words actually registered.

"I'm an expert with a sponge, luv. I've had much practice." He gave her a wink.

Marlow's meager store of learned flirtations expired with a blush that lingered on her cheeks. "You didn't learn to flirt from Doctor Strange. He uses worse lines than an old Dracula movie."

"He probably learned then from an old Dracula movie he watched when it first came out," Quinn grinned.

She laughed. "He must've been born middle aged because he's looked the same since I was given to Clea to raise."

"I don't know when this one was born, but he talks like a bad horror movie sometimes. It was a relief when I discovered I didn't need to rhyme every spell or even speak the words to make them work."

Quinn nodded. "That sounds like him. Any him I guess."

She had been so engrossed in talking with Quinn that her tea had grown cold. She held the cup in both hands and warmed it magically. "When did you want to go out?" And would she have time to ask Sydney what to expect on a date. The Dark Dimension didn't provide much in the way of a social life and Quinn was the first person she'd met that she had something more than magic in common with.

No time to ask Sydney about dating etiquette, but Quinn seemed like he would be understanding if she made an error along the way. Clea wanted her to have more real life experiences on Earth. Marlow was starting to realize that Clea may intend for her to stay here for an indefinite period of time. Certainly until whatever the real horror that was coming actually arrived and was dealt with.

"If I forget to say it later, thank you for the invitation."

"You're welcome, luv." He finished off the last of his tea. "I'm going to go clean up a bit and see if Sydney has something I can wear. See you in about an hour?"
