The Arrival (Open to Avengers)

-One Minute Ago, Washington DC, Earth 1222-

Justin Rhodes swore he’d never leave his suit unattended again after today.

He lay on the floor of an abandoned house and struggled against his unresponsive armor as he looked up at his father, Iron Man, who was checking the windows for any sign that they were followed to this safehouse. Most of Washington DC was on fire tonight, courtesy of the Avengers, but James Rhodes was never one to give up a fight as long as he had back up

Today was different for both of them.

“Justin, I’m sorry it had to happen like this. I knew you wouldn’t do this if I asked you, so it came down to this. You’re going to live, whether you want to or not, Justin. Your mother made me promise that I’d find a way out for you if this war went south for us; it has, and I did. It was her condition for letting you put the armor on in the first place.” Jim said, a tear sliding down his cheek.

“Dad, we can still win this! Just turn my armor back on and I can help you! You can’t cut me out like this!” Justin yells. He can’t believe his father is doing this to him now, of all times. He thought they were friends, a team. He even thought they were equals, once upon a time.

“I’m your father, Justin; I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it, which I’m doing now. I’ve always been proud of you, son. No matter what happens after today, your mother and I will be always be proud of you. You’re getting a second chance…make something out of it.” Jim says, slipping the Iron Man helmet over his head.

Tony- Cooridinates E-616, Sector 1211. Self-destruct upon arrival.

At that moment, the NIMROD sentinel bursts through the wall of the house the pair have been hiding in over the last hour, and Iron Man turns to face it.

“Tony, get him out of here, now!” Jim barks, lunging at the first cyborg he can see.

The last thing Justin sees before the world folds in upon itself is his father tearing the head off of one Sentinel and blasting another with his repulsor rays.  He doesn’t need to see how this ends, because he and his father both knew what was happening the moment he’d called retreat in New York after Captain America went down. It was all over.

In a way, it was over for him as well.

-Now, Times Square, Earth 616-

A bright light flashed above the New York skyline, then quickly descended toward the Earth. Many of the onlookers were too transfixed to realize that the falling object was headed toward them. The ones who figured it out fast enough had a head start on the panic and running.

Justin was barely conscious as he went through a series of passcodes in his armor, bringing all the systems on line, and tried to ignore the fact that the ground was rushing up to meet him faster than he liked. By the time all of his systems were online, the readouts were all bad news. His heart monitor was in the red, he was at forty percent power, and he was currently about five-thousand feet above the ground. Time until impact: 30 seconds.

“Tony, divert all power to thrusters, get me out of this nosedive, now!” Justin commanded, trying to turn and right himself in mid-air so as not to become an Iron Pizza in the middle of…

Where was he?

The closer he got to the ground, the more he recognized this city, but something was wrong with it. The were undamaged buildings, lights and from the look of things…lots and lots of people.

Living people.

Where the hell am I?

-Thirty Seconds Later-

“When I get home,” Justin muttered, “Dad and I are going to have a long talk about mid-battle surprises.”

He climbed out of the wreckage of the Stark Enterprises truck (he’d find time for the irony later) and tried to right himself. His left arm was numb, and his chest hurt like hell, but he didn’t have time to worry about it. He had to get off the streets and get somewhere safe.

“Are you okay, War Machine?” a little boy asked, the first person of a crowd of people who’d found their way to his location. He held a War Machine plush doll under one arm.

“I’m…I’m good.” he panted. “Thanks. Hey, where did you get that?”

Before the little boy could answer, there was another flash of light, this time from ground level, and a metallic voice spoke into the night.

JUSTIN ANTHONY RHODES. You are hereby charged with one count of unlawful dimensional travel, 672 counts of fleeing from justice and 1,992 counts of aiding in a terrorist rebellion against the rightful government of the United States of America.”

Justin and the little boy both looked at the NIMROD Sentinel at the same time; the boy stood frozen in fear and Justin’s eyes narrowed underneath the helmet.

“Kid, go back to your mother. Right now. Tell her to tell everyone here to go home now.” Justin said.

“You can beat ‘im, War Machine.” the boy said before he ran off.

I’m glad one of us thinks so.

How do you plead?” the Sentinel asked.

“Guilty as charged. Get to the sentencing portion.” Justin said.

You are found guilty under United States Penal Code 21832.673. The punishment for your actions is death. Prepare for sentencing. You may speak your final words.” the robot said,

“Uni-Beam.” Justin said, diverting power to his chest plate. The beam lanced forth and slammed the Bio-Sentinel through the glass window of the Sach’s department store thirty-five yards behind him. Luckily, the place wasn’t opened yet, so it could be damaged without cost to innocent bystanders.

“EVERYONE GET OUT OF HERE NOW!” Justin yelled, waiting for the Bio-Sentinel to make its move.

"It's always worth a try," she said with a smile. "Yes, really. I take it you've either never been there or it's been destroyed where you're from.'

She smiled. "I did check out the armor. I am a Stark after all. Nice suit and a very interesting AI." Though it sounded way too much like her father. "My AI's been chatting with it. He's happier than a Stark with a new toy."

"If you mean Mr. Stark by the one and only Tony Stark, he's my father. Natasha Romanova is my mother. I know who your dad is, do I dare ask who your mother is?"

"Yes, both. It was destroyed two years before I was born and then after the Sentinels came online, you couldn't get near New York without a suit or a ton of back-up." he says, nodding.

"Hey, what's today's date?" he asks. It's worth finding out if he's gone back in time or into an actual parallel dimension. Doc Richards would flip if Justin was in an alternate dimension. It would mean that a lot of the theories he, Dad and Uncle Tony worked on were successful.

"I hope Tony isn't too uppity with your AI. Someone programmed him to nag me up one side and down the other after I built him. My mother is highest on the list of suspects, followed by Uncle Tony and Dad." he says.

"Tony married Natasha? That's...that's great." Justin says, his tone happy and genuine. Back home, things didn't go so well for them, and it was one of the events that led to his passing.

The fact that Anya's talking about him in the present tense means he's still alive here.

"My mom? Her name is Virginia. Virginia Potts." Justin says. He may as well start getting familiar with all the players here if he's going to have any hope of getting back home.

Anya sputtered. "Pepper!? Pepper is your mom?" Oh this was just too good! Tomorrow morning at work was going to be interesting to say the least.

"Welcome to this world," she said with a smirk. "You're not our first dimensionally challenged person to drop in and thankfully you're not related to me." She smiled. "If he is, Goddard will give it right back. He's a snarky bastard."

"They just got married a year ago. They were together for a bit when they had me, split up and got back together."

"Your armor told me what happened. I want to hear your version."

Justin blinked when he heard Anya refer to his mother by her nickname.

"Wait...you guys still call her Pepper here? Wow. Dad doesn't even call her Pepper back home, not even as a joke. He's ended up on the couch each time he's made the mistake." Justin laughs.

"So...both of them are here? Jim and...Pepper?" he said, trying the nickname out. That was going to take some getting used to.

"I'm happy for you and your parents. Uncle Tony and Natasha...they loved each other, but they were both pretty entrenched in their own lives. Neither of them knew how to make it work, and they parted ways. Tony didn't do so well after that." he says.

"Really, whatever my armor told you, there isn't much to elaborate on. Norman Osborn was appointed Secretary of Defense shortly after the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act. It started out as 'Register or never use your powers or tech again'. After the president and his most of his Cabinet were assassinated, Osborn became President.

No one could stop him, but the Avengers tried. They've all been my family since the day I was born. None of the rest of them had children, so they all pretty much spoiled me, which Mom loved and hated at the same time. I've spent a lot of my life dodging things like that Nimrod Bio-Sentinel you and your friend saved me from. Thank you both, by the way." he says.

"Anyway, Osborn had the tech, the numbers advantage, and little by little, he started taking us down. Uncle Clint and Aunt Bobbie were first. Vision and Quicksilver soon after. Uncle Tony saved my parents when no one else could and he paid for it.

Dad apparently rigged my suit to send me away if things got too bleak, and here I am now. I don't plan on imposing on you guys too long. As soon as I can stand, I'll start looking for ways to get back home." he says.

Dad had to be lying to him. He wouldn't really stick him here for the rest of his life while the rest of the Avengers died in battle. This had to be temporary. Reversible.

It had to.

Anya put a hand over her mouth. "Oh my God," she gasped. "That's...wow. I'm so sorry." She couldn't imagine such a world. No matter what happened, they always managed to prevent something like that from happening. It was unimaginable.

"She's Pepper here. She works for Stark Inc. She's always been my other mom while I was growing up. She's married to Happy and has been for a long time. As for Uncle Rhodey, well he's been married to Aunt Monica for about as long and they have a daughter named Toni."

"As for my parents, they didn't work the first time around. This time seems to be working. They're married and expecting another child in November."

"Hey, don't be sorry. One learns to live with it after awhile." he says.

Justin listened everything Anya had to say. His parents were each married to different people here. Jim Rhodes had a daughter of his own. That meant there really wasn't a place for him among these people, so his best course of action--his only course of action, really-- was to get better, then get back home.

"Another child? That's pretty awesome. You must be stoked." he said. Justin knew he would have been.

Although, now, he did have a sister, through his father.

"Hey...can I ask you for a favor? Could you not tell Mr. Rhodes or Miss Potts that I'm here. I don't want to disrupt their lives if I'm just going to be leaving again soon. There's no sense in it." he says.

If he leaves more quietly than he came, there's a good chance they won't know he was here until he was gone.

"I am sorry. I think that sometimes we have it bad here, and then someone shows up and they've lost everything. James came from a world that Ultron took over and destroyed almost everything."

I am," she said even though she really didn't want another bratty brother. She really wanted a little sister. "My mother never thought she'd have kids let alone five. Funny how life happens."

"I can promise you that, but I have to tell my Dad and Uncle Steve. I can't promise they won't tell Pepper and Uncle Rhodey." She sighed. "Look, I'm going to be painfully honest with you. You may be here for awhile. James, Eliza and Emily have been here for almost a year and we haven't figured out how to send them home yet." She wasn't going to give him false hope or a comforting lie.

Justin was surprised to know that there were other people like him in this dimension. He'd never heard of anyone being displaced from their home in his own, which made him further wonder where his father chose to send him.

"Yeah, but we're all alive, so that's the best part." he says.

"Thank you. I know you can't control anyone else, so...tell who you need to tell and I'll deal with it from there. Maybe we'll all figure out how to get everyone home who wants to go.

In the meantime...what do you guys have in the way of food around here? I could go for a Philly Cheese steak, if those exist here. Or a cheeseburger. I haven't eaten since Thursday...I think." he says.

He was pretty sure it was Thursday.

"Oh, and French fries." he says.

Steve, finally back at the mansion (talking to SHIELD was sometimes a pain in the ass), poked his head into the room. "How's it going?" he asked.

Justin offered a friendly nod in Steve's direction.

"Hey man, I wanted to say thank you, again, for bailing me out earlier. You and Anya saved my life. I appreciate it." he says, offering a hand.

"I'm Justin Rhodes. I'm not from around here, but Anya says that's pretty common in these parts." he said.

"Boring," Steve told Anya after they broke. "And paperwork filled." And also included denial that there had been more than one armored figure, no sir, you must be confused. But he wasn't going to mention that.

"Figured you for one," Steve told Justin. "And it's no problem. It's what we do."

He took the hand. "Steve Barton."

He's practically the spitting image of Uncle Clint.

His eyebrows raise a little as he shakes Steve's hand. "Good to meet you, for however long I'm here. Anya says there are other people who've been here awhile, so once I'm able to get out of bed, maybe I'll get around to meeting them as well." he says.

"Hey, Anya, thanks for coming by and talking to me...and bringing me here. I'm going to try to relax for a bit, though. I didn't mean to keep you guys from whatever you were up to tonight.

Thank you both again, though. I appreciate it."
