Fragile Glass, Hard Diamond
It's like a whole new life, Melinda thinks to herself, looking out the window of the cab as it pulls up to 1407 Graymalkin Lane. Across the ocean from her family, her old life, her life of ignoring the truth of who she was... and a chance to repair some of the damage she has done.

Her parents had a hard time hearing what had happened. Her brother had listened... and told her that he loved and supported her, but had no idea how to help her beyond that. Her mother had cried. Her father had just been angry... not at her, but at the situation. And late at night, she had heard him sobbing in their bedroom. They all told her that they didn't blame her for what she'd done.

But that didn't matter. They might not blame her, but... they didn't know. They didn't know what it felt like to kill people... and worse, to remember enjoying killing.

She had to come. She had to try to wash this stain on her soul clean... even if she didn't think she ever could.

She gathers her bags from the cab's trunk and heads for the front door. A short time later, a student guide helps point out her room, and opens her door for her, letting her in.

Melinda steps into the room, bags loading her down.

He sits down on the bed a couple feet away, when she seems comfortable enough with him hanging out here.

"Oh, a telepath? We'll probably be in a lot of classes together. I'm a dreampath, as far as mutant powers go. Not as much regular utility, but it keeps most telepaths out of my mind, anyway."

"I prefer to identify as a technopath. The telepathy is just another unfortunate side effect of being Emma Frost's daughter as far as I am concerned but everyone insists on making a big deal out of it. I hate to break it to them, but I'm never going to have her skill and I've willfully avoided dealing with it most of my life. I'd much rather get into the nerve center of gadgets anyway.

"What exactly does a dreampath do?"

"There's nothing wrong with not wanting to do much with your powers other than controlling them. As for what my powers can do... astral projection, better than most psychics in the astral and I can tap into the local unconscious for things like speaking whatever the local language is. That's about it with awake people. When someone is asleep, I can enter their dreams, interact with their subconscious, help stop nightmares, manipulate the dream to help them dream about whatever they want, or undo psychic damage, things like that. Its not necessarily all that useful a lot of the time, especially since some people are pretty private about their dreams. I try and help out where I can though."

"It sounds like you are more useful than you realize. Or are just exceptionally modest." She smiled. "Perhaps you should talk to my roommate. I'm afraid Melinda has some serious things going on inside."

He nods. "I've been working with Melinda. I did most of the deprogramming of the people who were brainwashed. My powers are useful, just only in very specific situations. But they don't define me. I'm just glad to be able to help. I'm also still learning some about them. At home I had a lot more chance to study theology and magic, now I'm kind of working on balancing things out a little. Other than the roommate situation, how are you settling in?"

"Eh. I'm settling. I still don't know exactly what I'm doing here. I swore to myself that I would avoid all of this and make a way on my own away from this and yet here I am."

"Hey, 'all of this' can be pretty nice. Like I said, we'll probably share a lot of classes. If I can help with anything, either getting used to that, or just getting comfortable, let me know, ok?"

"I will, Lucas. Thank you. I have to admit I didn't quite know what to expect from people when I showed up here. So far I am mostly surprised and in a good way." Chris smiles and then groans as her cell starts ringing. "I should take this. It's my mother and she's not going to stop with the calling until I answer. It was nice to meet you."
