Good Food, Good Times
Justin Rhdoes is tired of lying in a hospital bed. His sister (he's still getting used to that) has had a tougher time of it than he has, so he doesn't think it's right for him to stay cooped up in a bed. After showering, getting dressed and "asking" to be allowed some time to himself, Justin takes Tony, his A.I., and decides to go see New York for himself.

He's still awed at how new everything looks here. This isn't a world ravaged by battle and bombs, and the people walk around here without a care in the world for their safety. Justin's awed by all of it, never having seen this many people in a single place that weren't hiding for their lives. After several blocks of walking, though, Justin feels fatigue set in. He curses his weak heart for the millionth time, and decides that food and drink are in order, since all he's eaten is infirmary food over the last week. He's got a bit of money as well, a gift from Rhodey.

He still doesn't know if the man likes the idea of having a son, and he still hasn't meet Miss Potts, his mother.

"Tony, locate nearest restaurant. I want a burrito." he says. He hasn't had a burrito in months.

Minutes later, he's in line at a place called Chipotle, trying to decide if he wants steak or pork.

He's tempted to order both.

Can't even go dancing like a normal person, Justin. You'll be lucky if she answers the phone anymore after this.

"Well, we can still go. I just...you didn't know. We just met, so don't feel bad. It's not one of those things you can tell by just looking at someone. And...I'm actually glad you didn't already know." he says.

"Iced tea is great. I love cooking, flying, and working in the lab. I like to build things. I also like to sketch, but I'm better with machines than people." he offers.

She laughs a little.

"I'm a terrible cook. I burn water and yeah, I'm much better with machines. Machines...seem to understand me. But you saw me fix your watch." She smiles. "What things do you build?"

"Oh, lots of things. Things that help people do their jobs." he says.

Bombs, mines, suits of powered armor capable of fighting large-scale wars...you know, stuff that helps people do their jobs. he thinks to himself.

"I'd like to build a pacemaker that doesn't require upkeep, some day. Help people with issues like mine to live normal, active lives." he says.

"I think that's noble and wonderful. There is such use for those things in the world. I just play with computers. I don't think I do anything all that philanthropic."

Except, y'now...save the world while looking hot in spandex.

"I'm really impressed."

Justin beams, quite without meaning to.

"Thank you. Not many people find my work interesting, but it's good to know that someone can." he grins.

"So, what's good here? I love steak, but there are just so many kinds. Care to suggest anything?" he asks.

"Oh, that's easy. Everything is good. I'm personally getting the Kobe Porterhouse with the garlic mashed potatoes. I absolutely adore that. With a double portion of mashed potatoes."

"Well, considering how my stomach just agreed with you, I'll be having the same." he laughs.

"You look great, Christina. I don't know if I mentioned that, but you do." he says.

She blushed a little in spite of herself, cheeks growing pink for a moment.

"Thank you. You look very handsome yourself. I...really like your eyes."

That didn't sound lame, did it? I hope not.

"Thank you." he smiles in return, trying not to sound lame himself.

"So, were you at all nervous about tonight? Because I was. Still am." he says.

"Oh God. Yes. Crazy nervous. I was worried you wouldn't show up or that I'd wear something stupid or I'd have food in my teeth from the burrito earlier or...something.

"You don't seem nervous. At all. I've been thinking how calm you seem. And being very envious of that."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Do I seem calm? Good. That means I'm hiding it well." he jokes.

"And if you did have food in your teeth, I'd at least tell you. Or help you get it out." he says, taking a sip of his water.

He let that hang in the air for a moment.

"How long have you lived in New York, again?" he asks.

Help me get it out? THAT was code.

She took a sip of her water as well, the waiter bringing their drinks and salads to the table, taking their order, and then leaving.

"Three years. I left my mother's home at 18 and came straight here. I have a place in Tribeca. I love this city. It's so...alive."

"Really? I was thinking about trying to get a place in Tribeca myself. Still looking, though. And this city is unlike anywhere else, that's for sure." he says.

"Maybe something R&D with one of the firms around here. My parents work with a few scientists, and might be able to help me out. I'm a big fan of the nine-to-five job." he says.

"But I want to make my own way, so I'll start from the bottom if I've got to. I know I've got what it takes to succeed." he says.

"I think it's really great that you want to make your own way. That is somewhat why I moved here, though I freely admit that I do take advantage of my mother's wealth. I try not to be spoiled. I'm just still trying to find my own way. It's difficult when your mother seems to have her hands everywhere."

He nods.

"My mother and I are pretty close, and I can't imagine it being any other way, really. She's my best friend." he says, wishing he could see his mom now. She'd have all kinds of questions about his date. What was she like? Do you like her? Are you going out again?

He's silent for a long moment before continuing.

"How about your dad? Do you get along with him any better?" he asks.

"I don't know who my father is, Justin. My mother will not tell me. Neither will my step-father of sorts. Former step-father of sorts. I think she regrets being with him and regrets me.

"I'm envious, a bit, of your relationship with your mother."

"I'm sorry. That was none of my business, Christina. But your mother is crazy if she can't be proud of you. Every kid deserves unconditional love from their parents." he says.

"So, did you say you have siblings? I've got a younger sister." he says.

"I have a little sister, Grace. She's wonderful. Is bent on protecting all the creatures of the sea. She's very in-tune with the parts of herself she got from her father. And she's all sunshine and sparkles and happiness. With a cookie addiction." Christina chuckles. "She made growing up tolerable."

He smiles at her, wondering what it would have been like to grow up with a little sister instead of being an only child.

"That's awesome. It's cool that you two are close." he says.

"It's hard not to be close to her. She's a really awesome person. Given the people we grew up around the fact that she's as so purely good as she is is kind of amazing.:

She smiled at him.

"Tell me about your family. It sounds like you had a much more balanced and happy childhood than mine."

"Well, my dad has always been a tough man, but fair. He always expected me to do what was asked of me, and to give my all to whatever I did. We worked together on a lot of things, so I had that respect for him.

I was closest to my mother, though. She and I could talk about any and everything, and I'm not always good at saying what I feel. Mom could pull anything out of me, and explain it to where my Dad understood it. She was our go-between." he says.

"My uncle and I were closer than Dad and I. We're both big gear-heads and love building thing and making them better. I learned a lot from him before he passed away." Justin says.
