Birds of a Fire
Galactus was gone, Chandrillar had been saved. The Throneworld of the Shi'ar Empire and its royals were safe. Saved by the efforts of the X-Men and the former guardian of the M'krann Crystal, the Phoenix.

The Phoenix, bonded to Rachel Summers of Earth, daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey, the former host of the Phoenix, counterpart of another Rachel Summers who had also hosted a measure of the Phoenix's power.

The same Phoenix the Shi'ar had tried to kill or enslave numerous times. The same Phoenix a rogue faction of the Shi'ar had so feared, they'd tried to kill the entire Grey family and would have, if not for the timely intervention of the X-Men.

As Rachel rejoined the others, still surrounded by a corona of cosmic flame, she could feel the unease from... well, virtually the entire world.

	Gladiator steeled his mind against the psychic attack and pushed back. He would not fail the Majestrix or the Empire. He would defeat the Summers girl and bring her into custody. He had fought the Phoenix before and he would not fail this time. Beams of energy came from his eyes as he got close to her. His fists aimed right for her chest. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Phoenix let more of the power flow into her, blocking Gladiator's eyebeams with a psionic energy shield.

The Phoenix flames danced around her and reached out to grip him. How dare they? How dare they try to cage her, after what she had done for this stupid planet. How dare they! Everything they had done to her, to her mother, to her family...

She ought to burn it all down. Down to the ground.

Every. last. one.

The Phoenix flames grew brighter, dancing almost demonically around her, even as the colors of her uniform seemed to grow darker.

	The Phoenix glowing brighter and getting bigger did not concern him. It only stressed the fact that she had to be dealt with. Gladiator /would/ do this. He /would/ not fail. Even as she grabbed him the flames, he kept fighting. Beams came from his eyes and his fists kept swinging. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	The only thing that probably saved Gladiator's life in this case was that Rachel was still a factor in guiding her own actions. As it was, the psionic blast she unleashed upon him probably would have killed anyone else. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Gladiator's abilities saved him from the most of the psionic blast, but not all of it. He was thrown back a bit. His confidence faltered a bit. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

The Phoenix was larger now, Rachel a very small figure within the fiery corona. Fiery talons gripped Gladiator and squeezed.

I should kill you now, fool. Always following whoever rules, never thinking for yourself. A puppet. A fool. That's you. But I want you to see the cost of your actions.

I want you to live to watch your world burn.

She hit Gladiator with another blast, then let him drop.

	This blast did affect Gladiator and his confidence faltered a little more. He was thrown back. "You will not destroy the Empire," he growled as he tried to shake off the effects of the blast. (Reply to this)(Parent)
