Spring in Moscow
Natasha walked slowly through the elaborate gardens on the palace grounds. Her nephew Mikhail had wanted her to sit in on a meeting, but the day was too lovely to not be outside. The sun was a balmy 60 degrees. Natasha smiled as she inhaled the perfumed air and soaked up the warm sunlight. Bright flowers in bloom surrounded her and added to the tranquility of the gardens.

It was much better than sitting in on a meeting.

She had used her pregnancy as an excuse and told her nephew she wanted to nap for awhile. Jet lag and pregnancy not mixing well or something along those lines.

The beautiful setting of the gardens helped to take her mind off of Ivan. The old man's health was in decline and Natasha worried about him. He was in his nineties and still had a sharp mind, but time was catching up to him. His body was beginning to fail him and Natasha and Ivan both knew he didn't have much time left.

There was a tightness in Natasha's chest at the thought of losing Ivan. He had been with her for her entire life and she couldn't imagine life without him. Ivan had been her only family for many decades. He was the only father she had ever known. He was a grandfather to her children.

She was so enmeshed in her inner thoughts she almost didn't notice the small fluttering feeling in her abdomen.

Natasha stopped walking and concentrated. She couldn't have been imagining it. There. Another one. Natasha smiled. The baby was moving and she just felt it for the first time. She just wished Tony could have been here for this. Still smiling, Natasha started walking again.

"I'm fine," she assured him. "No thanks. I just had some chamomile a short while ago." She smiled at the last question. "Only if they're not blanks. You look tired. Everything okay?" She brushed a lock of unruly hair back from his eyes.

He shrugged and gave her a sheepish smile. "I'm okay. Was in New Orleans with Lyta for a couple of days. The place really is one great big party." That sounded convincing even to his own ears. "How's Grandpa Ivan doing?"

She didn't completely buy it, but let it go. She wasn't going to pry. If he felt like explaining better, he would.

"He's not doing well. This illness is taking its toll on him. I think it would do him a lot of good to see you."

"I thought I'd spend tomorrow morning with him before I fly back to New York." He looked down at the half eaten plate of food. "I wish he was back home. He's all by himself here."

"Stop by and say hi to him tonight. You know he'll give you hell if he finds out you were here tonight and didn't stop by. He's not alone here. Mikhail is here with him and Ivan feels like he needs to be here. I've tried talking him into coming home with me."

"If he talks me into giving him vodka, I can't be held responsible." His smile faded a little. "Mikhail's been okay, but he's a new addition. Grandpa belongs with us. You, me, and Anya. We need him too."

"I know he does, but he doesn't belong to just us. We can keep working on him and maybe in a month or two he'll agree to come back." It was all that she could really offer. Ivan was a stubborn old man and getting him to change his mind was a process to say the least.

He could get Ivan to easily agree, but that would not only break the spirit of his agreement with Stark, it would have the unwanted effect of alarming Mom.

"So that's where I get it from," he joked. "I'll work on him, and you take it easy."

"I'm pregnant, not fragile or handicapped," she grumbled. "Why must everyone treat me like I'm suddenly going to break?"

"Because you're nearly eighty years old and you weren't intended to have children?" he reminded her, tongue in cheek. He expected to get swatted for it. "It's been a generation since you last had a baby. Take it easy so nothing happens."

"I am taking it easy," she assured him. "Any easier and I'd be comatose. Don't worry about me. I've done this before, you know."

"Eighteen years ago," he pointed out. "And I do worry about you. You're my best girl. Dad always said if I took care of my best girl, everything else would fall into place."

"And one before that," she pointed out. "I just don't want to be treated like I'm going to break apart at the slightest thing." Natasha smiled. "You're doing a very good job and you can tell Dad that."

"I know we're driving you crazy," Misha said. He took her hand and laced his fingers with hers. "You need to let us look after you for our sakes'. Personally, I need a role to fill and it makes me feel like I'm part of things."

"I just hate being fussed over. You know that. I will try to be better about letting you and the rest of the family boss me around." She squeezed his hand. "I know you all mean well, but at times it does feel like I'm being smothered."

"I know, Mom. You're a little trooper and we're proud of you." He patted her hand, his expression all Dad dealing with a cranky female. "If you really need to shoot somebody, you got me, darlin'."

He managed not to tighten his grip on her hand, but he couldn't stop the tremor from adrenaline drain and lack of sleep. In normal life he was a pretty good liar, and an even better stonewaller. He would simply not talk about it even when asked a direct question. The second family lesson Logan drummed into him was never to lie to his parents. Refuse to discuss, okay. Do not lie.

He gave her a tired smile and released her to go back to eating the now cold food. "She's fine. Keeping busy."

"Last time I talk to Anya she was enjoying having her own team. James is doing okay. I never hear from Eliza but I assume she's okay." He picked up the bottle of imported beer that came with his meal and took a drink. "Dad's good."
