Victory Celebration
Tomorrow the warriors of the fleet will return to mourning, begin preparations to return home without a lot of their original number and set out longer range patrols to make sure they've dealt with all of the threat. For tonight, however, there's a celebration. There's limited supplies, certainly, but they've done their best. Typical for their traveling fleets, there's boiled meat and fish. There's also plenty of mead.
Entertainment is a combination of a couple of skalds recounting stories from the history of the tribe, and then bragging and stories exchanged around a long table. The heroes are given esteemed places around the table, with Svalin at the head.

Eli enjoys each kiss, savoring it as if it might be the last one. He doesn't think he'll ever forget Vernique, not even if he lives to be 10,000 years old.

His eyes close as the second kiss breaks and Eli smiles.

"Yes...definitely worth battling a legion of Kangbots for. Being hailed as a hero is nice, too." he quips.

"Mmmm. Very sweet of you. And you make a very cute hero."

A slight pause, still standing close to him. "We need to talk about something."

Eli smiles, then nods at her request to talk about something.

"What should we talk about?" he asks.

"I think we're becoming good friends, Eli. And I," she says slowly as she stays nice and close. "--am having...fun. But I've got to tell you, I'm not exactly the classic example here. I think we could have a lot more fun. But it'd be as good friends, and not as a proper steady relationship. The last thing I want to do is mislead you."

"I agree that we are becoming good friends, Vernique, and I enjoy this. This...fun you speak of is intriguing to me. I do not seek to bind you into a relationship, either." Eli tells her. His reasons for doing so are many and varied, the least of which is the difference in life-span between them.

"I would like to spend time with you in whatever way I can, as long as we both enjoy it, Vernique. And then someday, we can laugh about all the fun we had since we met." he smiles.

"That does sound nice. So does the idea of a little more privacy. Just the slightest bit. Like that provided by my tent."

"More privacy is good. Yes." he says, his mind not exactly following her meaning for a moment.

When he does "get it", however, the young Eternal does something very human: he blushes.

"Vernique...I would love to go with you to your tent, but...I need to tell you something important.

I am unskilled." he says, looking away. It was a source of teasing and shame for him, almost as much as his disability, which he'd only ever told Kal about.

Her smile doesn't falter at all as she sidesteps and takes an inch off to stay in his field of vision, nor does it burst even slightly towards mirth.

"Good," she says with quiet sincerity. "Much better than being poorly skilled. No bad habits to break. You'll learn it all right the first time. We won't ...go too far tonight, Eli. I'll just show you a few things, and you just have to react naturally -- if those reactions are problematic in any way, I'll just show you a better way, and you'll know next time." She stays pressed against him. "You've always struck me as a man who can pay attention, so we've got nothing to worry about."

Eli can barely concentrate between the press of Vernique against him and the sound of her voice in his ears.

"It is easy...to pay attention when everything you say is worth listening to, Vernique." he says softly.

"Lead and I will follow." he tells her.

And lead she does. And what follows for quite a while in her tent should be just as advertised: s careful and honestly informative educational experience, and very fun. At least, Vernique has a satisfactory amount of fun, and tries to make sure of the same for Eli.
