Two days in New York City
Jenny was happy to conveniently forgot her scheduled appointment with Dr. Samson, but leave it to Rob to have it on his calendar. The day before, she was notified that she would be collected at 6am and delivered to the S.H.I.E.L.D. transport for the New York run.

She tossed a few items into her shoulder bag along with a new book. She didn't need anymore than that as Rob had kept their leased apartment in New York. Between his monthly trips back to New York and her infrequent traveling, he said it was worth hanging onto it. Everything she might need was already there.

A note was posted on the refrigerator so the team would know she would be in the States for a couple of days. She also included a post script asking Leech to make sure Yankee Clipper was fed. She really hoped Quinn would continue to be tolerant and not turn YC into a fluffy orange and white throw pillow.

In New York, she had time to shower and change clothes before presenting herself at Dr. Samson's office promptly at 3pm. Each time she had one of these appointments she hoped it would be the last. Each time he said he would see her again in three months. At least this time she would have something different to contribute to the conversation.

Fifteen minutes later, Jenny emerged to the sounds of Ella through the apartment, dressed and ready to head out. She smiled back at him from the doorway, working the long, damp mass of hair into a loose braid. There was no need to waste time with a hair dryer when it would dry quickly enough in the heat when they left for breakfast.

"You have great taste in music. Ella makes me want to dance in the dark."

"I thought you'd agree with my choice. I just had a desire to hear her suddenly and saw you had her. Couldn't resist." he says.

"Of course, when it comes to you, there isn't much I can resist." Andy says.

"Good to know. I can work with that information." Her smile widened. "C'mon handsome, let's go eat."

The corner diner had actually seen quite a bit of her before she made the move to London. It had been her first stop for breakfast every weekday morning before class for the year after her discharge from S.H.I.E.L.D. medical.

She was glad to see it hadn't changed much. It was still busy, but a couple of stools at the counter were open.

He escorts her to the counter and then sits down, taking a look at the menu. A small TV nearby talks about the tragedy in Fargo, Georgia, a subject that has dominated the news over the last few weeks.

"That whole thing is just terrible, you know. Mutants everywhere are being blamed for the actions of a few. It's not right." Andy says.

Like other mutants must be doing, Jenny had closely followed the news reports from Fargo.

"It's never a good time to be a mutant," she said quietly, watching the news report. She took his hand. Rob spent years hammering at her that she needed to take care and hide what she was to avoid being labeled along with the others. "Getting people to realize we're not all the same seems to fail a little more every day."

"You have nothing to be ashamed of, Jenny. You're still a regular person; you can just do something extra." Andy says. Still, he understands a little of where she's coming from.

He leans in to whisper in her ear. "Besides, you're the hottest mutant I know, and you love good music and good food. If that doesn't make you normal, then screw normal."

Jenny felt warm and melty inside. They were just words, and with that wonderful voice he made her feel good about herself and the instinct that led her to these few days.

"How do you do that?" she asked.

Andy was suddenly confused.

"How do I do...what?" he asks.

"You practically read my mind, and then you say just the right thing. You make me feel good about ... everything." She pressed a quick kiss to his mouth. "I feel like I've been waiting for someone like you all my life."

"I would love to say that I'm using some sort of godly talent on you, honey, but I'm not. I just listen to what you tell me, both with and without words." he says, accepting the kiss.

"You deserve to feel good about who you are. You're a good person." he says.

"Oh, and you don't have to wait anymore. I'm here as long as you want me to be." he grins. "Just...try to ignore the fact that someday soon, you may have to deal with Titan and we're good."

"You are an amazing person, Andy. I'm feeling very lucky that you agreed to have dinner with me. For you, I'd deal with anybody to keep this feeling." She kissed him again and turned to smile at the counter waiter putting menus in front of them.

"This guy," she told the waiter, an older man who was clearly busy but smiled back at her, "gives wonderful a whole new meaning."

It's Andy's turn to blush as she sings his praises to the waiter.

"She makes it easy for me." Andy tells him in response.

"So, what are you having? I'm definitely going with the omelet." he says. "And whatever you have, I'm probably going to taste test, just to make sure it's safe." he smiles.

"My hero! I'll have the corned beef hash, scrambled eggs, and sourdough toast," she told the waiter. "And orange juice, please."

She still held Andy's hand. Clung to it, and pretended time wasn't counting down.

"I want to know why you think your choice in books will be boring. Rob only reads political thrillers and I haven't yet figured out what's thrilling about them."

"It really depends on the political thrill. Tom Clancy can do no wrong in this area, especially when the story involves Jack Ryan. I haven't found another writer that really comes close to the amount of knowledge and detail he puts into his stories." Andy says.

He looks to the waiter. "I'll have the ham and cheese omelet with a side of pancakes and an apple juice, please."

Jenny's hand was warm, and he squeezed it gently three times, smiling.

"As for me...I like a lot of fantasy and mythological books. Stuff about the gods. Especially since I have a good idea of which parts are and are not true. I also like some of the other fantasy series like A Song of Ice and Fire and Wheel of Time.

Big books and long series do not scare me the way they would most people." he says.

"A lot of the books I've read in the last few years have been nonfiction." She kind of shrugged. Admitting she had to relearn what every child learned in school was a little on the embarrassing side. "Everything was gone. I could read, but I had no idea who the first president of the United States was or the current one."

"I did read the Wheel of Time series. Fantasy and science fiction are sort of a vacation from the nonfiction for me. It doesn't matter how long a series is or how big the book. I'm still catching up. I also love mysteries."

"That must have been really tough for you." Andy says. "Did any thing click when you started learning again or has the whole thing been one new process?" he asks.

"Not one thing was familiar. I had a tutor for six months to help me 'remember', but I learned everything from scratch. It wasn't all grim. I get to read all sides of a subject and not deal with any programmed teaching."

"You know, I never really thought of it like that. It does give you an advantage over people who've pretty much been told The Way It Is their whole lives and never given any further information to go on." Andy says.

"Do you like pulp or no pulp in your orange juice?" he asks at random.

"Rob nearly choked when it turned out that I also needed a refresher lecture in birth control and reproduction. It's had some entertainment value."

Jenny was getting used to the random questions. "Medium pulp. I like it in my juice, but not too much of it."

Andy nearly chokes on his apple juice when she says that. He manages to avoid a spit-take, and laughs a little.

"Wow. I didn't think about you needed to go over all of that stuff again, either." Andy says. "Did you find it embarrassing, funny, or no big deal?" he asks.

"I'm sure no older brother wants to think of his sister with a guy...like that." he says, turning a light shade of red.

Jenny grinned at his reaction. "I think I had the same expression that every eleven year old must have when they hear the basics - total disbelief. I was given biology and human sexuality books to read. After that I agreed it was probably true, especially since it was happening to me. It didn't really click until the tutor tried romance books."

She smiled at the waiter as he set plates in front of them. Conversation paused while she waited for the man to leave.

"I was still mentally an adult, just with a blank slate
on a lot of subjects. Rob had to deal. Not that he's had to much. You're the first date I've had since waking up." She leaned over to check out his breakfast before giving him a mischievous smile. "Meeting you was worth the wait."

Andy grins. "You're really the first girl I've been able to see myself going this far with, Jenny. We have fun, we talk, and we both like cheesecake."

He smirks after the last comment.

"We're good together." he says, cutting off a piece of the omelet and gently pushing the fork to her lips.

"Would you like a bite?" he asks.

The mention of cheesecake made Jenny's face turn pink and heat ran down her spine. Just like that, he left her breathless.

She accepted the offered bite.

"Very good," she finally said. "But I have to admit, I prefer the combination of cheesecake and demigod."

"Cheesecake and demigod prefer you, too." he grins, taking a bite of his omelet. His eyebrows rose at how good it was. He would definitely come here again when he was in New York again.

"How is the corned beef hash? I don't think I've ever had it before, but it smells good." he says.

"Never? You've missed out." Jenny offered a forkful of chopped meat she'd mixed with the egg. "It's a favorite of mine. Comfort food."
