Recruiting again
While it was hard not to dwell on exactly why she was looking for a new team member, Sammy wasn't about to push it off onto anybody else. The selection would be hers. She took a long look at the team left and considered what advantage they could use the next time a mission blew up in their faces. Then she reviewed available personnel files of agents and conditional agents with the skills or abilities that fell into her particular expectations, and requested that Jason Landon's handler bring him to the directorate for a meeting.

She arrived early. When Jason arrived he would see a pale faced woman with an inhumanly large mug of coffee in front of her, tapping on a PDA. Her sidearm was non-standard issue. A large bulging manila envelope sat in the middle of the conference table.

"It's Sam or Fury. Pick one."

The mention of his file made her smile a little more, although this time it wasn't so humorous. "Tech, when you get to know my team you'll realize that your concerns are unnecessary. We require specialists to outfit us because we are not your ordinary special ops team. This team was created in direct response to the Liberty Island battle and a half dozen recent situations that didn't make the media. SHIELD is often first on the scene and we're taking a place along side the Avengers and other UN sanctioned superhero teams to get the job done. Does that address your concerns?"

"Very well, Fury." Jason nods.

He was relieved to hear that his being a mutant wouldn't be an issue, though the thought of being in the field was still a little unnerving. Jake never took him on a job unless it was necessary, or when he planned to kill someone.

"That will address my concerns for the time being. I simply do not want to cause undue friction on the team due to possessing a genetic quirk that is beyond my control." Jason says.

"I also have some concerns...about the arrangement I made, regarding my brother's incarceration. I know that I'm not going to be called to testify against him, but will I still be able to visit him when I am not on-duty?

Also, will my working with you allow him an increased chance of parole?" he asks.

"We have two genetically quirked agents, an enhanced agent, and one plain ol' vanilla human that can kick ass like nobody's business. I know you need a lab and for the most part that's where you would be unless you're training with one of us. You will be required to train because of the field work. When I say we're taking a place along side the superhero teams it's because we're matching the tech and power sets. We'll also recruit and work with them from time to time."

"The arrangement you made stands. You can visit your brother whenever you're free. I don't know that this work will increase his chances of parole outside of your arrangement, but it won't hurt as long as he puts in the work to make himself look good for it."

"That's all I can ask for. I just want to make sure that my arrangement stands." Jason nods.

"I admit that the prospect of training alongside such modern warriors is exciting, but I...may be slow to learn. I didn't do a lot of fighting for myself as a kid. Most people left me alone because of my brother. But I will apply myself and work hard to integrate into the team without issue." Jason says.

"Is this sidearm the one you use most frequently, Fury? I can upgrade several of them if you have different weapons you like to use." he offers.

"It's my favorite," Sammy said. "I have several but this one fires well with my particular genetic quirk."

Another sip of coffee. She'd been living on the stuff and it showed in the smudges under her eyes. "The training is unavoidable. You don't have to be Captain America, but if the situation calls for you to be on site, I need to know that you're not a liability. Missions can go south in a hurry and it will only hurt us if you're unable to take care of yourself."

"Are you able to work off someone else's schematics?"

"I like that term, genetic quirk. I'll use it and credit you." he says.

"I will learn as much as I can as fast as I can, and I won't slow down the group. I'll be ready when you need me." he confirms. He would have to get into better shape and learn to fight, something Jake had been trying to teach him for years. Hopefully, the lessons would stick this time.

"I could probably work off any schematics I see, but my ability does a lot of the work for me. If I can see a machine of any kind in action, I can tell you everything it does or could possibly do. I can also neutralize it or rebuild it once I've seen it work." he tells her.

She nodded. "It's still your decision to join this particular team. I'll understand if you want to think about it and meet the others first. It will not count against you if you decide against it."

"I would be most interested in meeting your team, Fury. Perhaps by learning of them, I can determine if my skills will be of value to all. They can also know something of me and see if they are willing to accept me into your ranks." he says.

He hands her weapon back to her. "I'll need to make the adjustments to your weapon, but I can handle that quickly." he says.

"May I inquire as to your favorite day of the week?"

The question took her aback. She expected anything else up to and including salary, her genetic quirk, even if he'd get to have his very own hover car one day, but not this.

It was enough of a surprise to get him a small but genuine smile. "Tuesday."

He smiles back again, this one much brighter.

"You're the first person to give that answer, Fury. Tuesday is a good day." he says.

"Are there any other questions you have for me before we meet the team?" he says.

"I don't have any questions, but I do have some advice. Loosen up. Our rules are different than main S.H.I.E.L.D. We're more informal. We have to be."

She finally picked up her sidearm and ran her fingertips over it. She was so familiar with the weapon that she would be able to feel any slight misalignment. "We recently lost a team member so we may not be at our best. I'll set up a meeting so you can get a look at what you're about to jump into and we'll go from there. All right?"

"I will try to do that. Loosen up, I mean." he says.

"I'm sorry to hear of your teammate's loss. Was it related to work?" he asks.

"Yes." Her tone was matter of fact, but she didn't look up from the coffee mug. "Alice Dugan will contact you shortly. She's our go-to person."

"Alice Dugan." he says, nodding. "Duly noted and logged."

He notices Fury's expression regarding her fallen comrade and assumes that they were friends. Perhaps S.H.I.E.L.D, unlike many government organizations, was a family, where people were people instead of numbers.

"Thank you for meeting with me today, Fury. It is most appreciated."

Tech stands up, nods, and shakes the offered hand.

"I appreciate you speaking plainly with me, Fury. I hope we'll find that we can work well together." he says genuinely.
