Downer
Corey was concerned for Argo and Harmony and hoped their situation worked out as best possible. But he had something much cheerier to look forward to after dinner. Irina had snagged him an English translation edition of a magazine that had an interview with Kseniya.

Personal information about Kseniya Simonova was hard to come by. Corey knew that she was a former model, that she'd only been working with sand art for little more than a year before the touching and beautiful performance that made her famous, and that she'd donated all the prize money to a good cause. He can always stand to know more about her causes, and her work, and maybe there'll be more pictures -- classy pictures, Kseniya didn't do salacious stuff. She was an artist -- so he can try sculpting her properly.

Corey's never pretended not to be a boy infatuated.

It's a good article, talking about her degree in psychology, her avoidance of urban life, her causes, her concern about not getting to talk enough about said causes on television -- Corey finds it infuriating that they won't let her talk more --

And then he comes across a phrase he wasn't expecting. 'Kseniya and her gallery-owner husband.'

Husband.

It had only ever really been a joke, of course. 'Saving himself for Kseniya Simonova.' Of course it had. Of course any rational person knew that he had little chance of meeting her for any length of time and that she was several years older than he. It had only been a joke, explaining his perfectly legitimate lack of interest in pursuing girls right now in terms of his adoration of Kseniya. It wasn't really any more purely-speculative an infatuation now than it had been before.

But...

When it came absolutely down to it, Corey wasn't always a rational person. And he'll just curl up sadly in his room.

Everyone is human after all. Eliza didn't really know about Argo's problems but she had a hunch over Harmony. And knowing that Corey is just too nice of a guy to not listen to someone else's troubles Eliza isn't worried about her.

But sometimes it's just a good idea to check on the person who always lends an ear. So Eliza taps on his door. "Corey? May I come in?"

Corey looked up, cleared his throat. "Sure, Eliza; come on in."

She comes in with a small smile. She wanted to see how he was first before assuming anything. After all she didn't want to upset him.

"I wanted to see how you were doing."

"I gotta admit, Eliza," he says with a sigh. "Where's something weird going on when one makes Creme de Papaya and it still can't qualify as a good day."

She props herself against a wall. She has decided that sitting isn't really her thing right now. "Well it is pretty awesome."

She tilts her head. "You can unload you know. Tell me what's up. Maybe I can help?"

"I don't really have grounds to be complaining about it, but... Kseniya Simonova is married. And I didn't know that, and it's kind of a downer, even if it's nothing compared to everybody else's problems."

"It's okay to be upset though," Eliza says with a small smile. "I'd be bothered too if I was in your shoes. I mean, I get that you had been joking about it. But if I was as big an activist as you and a guy, I could totally see being attracted to her even if it was a remote attraction kind of thing. And finding out your crush slash celebrity role model is taken is a legitimate reason to be bothered."

Corey looked up. "I... thanks, Eliza. It's just, with all the legitimate girl-and-boy-trouble in the house, I kinda felt bad for feeling bad."

"Don't. It's normal. And they're real too," she says with a firm nod. She felt his problems were legitimate ones. Everyone had a right to feel something after all.

Corey listened, and slowly nodded. "Thanks."

"It's no problem," she flashes him a smile. "I hate seeing people hurting over stuff. It's kind of why I'm in this gig. To stop people from getting hurt in different ways."

Then it strikes her. She has no idea why Corey does this. "What about you? You're much more of an activist. You could just forget about us and go save the world in a different way."

Corey is thoughtful. "If family tradition doesn't predominate, maybe I'll focus on that full time someday, but in the meantime, New Orleans is where I want to be for now, and one lends a hand where it can be used, right?"

"Right. But do you enjoy yourself? I mean. I like this work. I don't find myself wanting to hang up the mask," she was just curious. Also this was getting him to focus on other things hopefully.

Irina had heard what the magazine had done to Corey and she felt bad. She thought she had been doing a good thing, but it backfired horribly. To make it up to Corey, she made a trip to Nova Roma and brought a few containers of garum back for him. He will find it in the fridge with his name on it.

Corey left a note thanking her for the garum -- and the magazine. Just because part of it was a downer didn't make it a thoughtful gesture, and appreciated.

Argo too, had somehow managed to learn of Corey's depression and the cause of it. After having provided him with such helpful advice, Argo knew he would need to reward the boy and now, with an opportunity to help, well, it all dovetailed rather nicely.

It had come as little surprise to find Ukrainian girls amongst the fan club, and was only slightly more surprising to find one who looked remarkably like Corey's crush. With his knowledge of Corey's usual shopping schedule (and dropping that he was an artist), it took surprisingly little convincing to make sure the girl would be at one of those places at the same time Corey would and would display interest in him.

Yes, the perfect plan to cheer up his little worshipper.

Their hands met reaching for the last bag in town of shade-grown chocolate-covered cherries. One of the most beautiful girls he'd ever seen in person. And considering the company he kept, that was saying something. And she was smiling at him.

He blushed. "You can have them. I've still got a pretty good shade-grown stash at home."
"Thanks! Hey, the package has pictures of birds on it!"
"Yeah. You know they donate ten percent of proceeds to restoring rainforest habitats."
"Oh?" She asked, smiling brightly but blankly. "Why do they do that?"

After half an hour's conversation, unconvincing on both sides, they shook hands politely and went home.
