Down Is Up, and Up Is Down
The Stark/Romanov Family Dinner. It was a study and exercise in insanity. They were usually loud, chaotic and entertaining to say the least. Natasha wasn't quite sure if she was up for this one or not. Her back was hurting and her ankles and feet were uncomfortably swollen. The good feeling of the second trimester was gone and the uncomfortable third was here. Though she wouldn't back out or tell Tony she didn't want to do it. They would have dinner and be entertained by the kids. Or so she hoped.

Picking a place was key, but this time she opted for Tony to get a private room at Delmonico's. Steak for the carnivores and private so that if things got loud they wouldn't embarrass themselves. And Natasha felt like dressing up a bit.

She had a new dress from Jan, a new pair of shoes and the earrings Tony gave her when she proposed to him.

When she and Tony were ready, he drove them to the restaurant. They even managed to beat the kids there.

Well. This was nice and... awkward.

"I... I'm sorry," she said. "Didn't know I was gonna upset her like that."

"You didn't do it," James told Stevie. "She's dating Steve Barton of this world and he disappeared on her birthday. You probably remind her of him."

"Stephanie, you couldn't have known. This is an adjustment for everyone." Tony says, trying to be a little more conciliatory.

"We all just need to take a moment and get our heads together." Tony says, getting up to leave the room.

Dear god, he could use a drink right now.

Natasha came waddling back a few moments later. "She'll be back in a few minutes. Then she noticed Tony was gone. "Where's Tony?"

"I think he's taking a moment and getting his head together," Misha said, frowning a little. He had to check his messages more often because he had no idea about Steve, or anything else happening on the other side of the family.

"You want me to check on him, or can I hold down the fort while you do? I'll spearhead the effort to get some appetizers on the table."

"Yeah, he needed to clear his head," Stevie said.

Nice to see she was still causing family problems and disappointing her "mom" wherever she went.

"These are never easy," Anya said as she sat down in her chair. "Sorry about that."

"Yeah..." Stevie started. "Talk. What can we do?"

"Well unless either of you have anything to dimensional portals, there's nothing you can do. I need to head to New Orleans and talk to Irina." Anya smiled a little. "Thanks though."

"That's..... Going to be a problem, Anya," Eliza says with a look of guilt. "I wanted to talk to Misha about this in private but.... Lyta and Irina have been missing for a few days. We don't know what's up yet. But I'll keep you informed."

"That...woman has Lyta?" Instantly angry, Misha turned that anger on Eliza. "A few days and you mention it now?"

Well. A guilt trip and a floor show. Tonight was certainly sending mixed signals about this family.

Stevie kept her mouth shut, though.

"No, what Eliza said is that they both have been missing a few days. She didn't say that Irina has Lyta." Anya shrugged. "It's Lyta and Irina. They probably went on a world wide shopping spree. They're not kids and don't need to check in with anyone."

He ignored Anya; she didn't know what he knew and he was prevented from telling her because her father wanted her safe. He sat back from the table and waited for an answer from Eliza who thought it was appropriate to bring it up here and now.

Stevie looked over at Anya.

"I'm thinking now's a good time to get out of here before these two start duking it out. Er... no offense, folks."

"We're not allowed to physically fight at dinners. Otherwise maiming is okay, killing is not." Anya shrugged. If Misha wanted to ignore her it was his prerogative, but everything wasn't a conspiracy to get him.

"But sticking your tongue out, teasing and making funny faces is totally allowed," James pointed out.

Being marginalized by Anya was nothing new. His agreement with Tony seemed about to be blown by Eliza because she had rotten timing. There was nothing he could do about it now. He made the effort to rein in his anger.

"It's encouraged," he said, backing up James' comment. "Mom seems to like it. We provide entertainment and then we go home."

"Just about," Anya said. "I'm sure Lyta is fine," Anya said to Misha. "We shopaholics can lose track of time. Especially when you have easy access to any place in the world. If you give me her cell number, I can probably track the location."

He nodded and pulled his cell phone from a pocket and tapped up the display for Lyta's number. It was listed under 'Feathers'. He handed it to Anya. "I'd appreciate it. I just need to know she's still shopping and safe." He really wanted to tell her what he'd learned and seen. She was smarter, she spotted connections faster than he did.

"You're even allowed to sing and dance if you like, Stevie? Stephanie? What name would you me to use?"

"Stevie, please," she told Misha. "Like I said, only my mom and apparently not-the-mama there call me Stephanie."

She wavered, and pushed on. "Fair warning, I'm really not used to this big family thing. Even less so since my parents divorced."

Anya took the phone and started accessing the phone's systems. The thing was hooked up to the Stark satellites and Anya could access what she needed without a computer.

"We only do these dinners one a month or there about. Mom's idea and we humor her. Otherwise we would need a note from God notarized by St. Peter to get out of them."

"We're not a typical family, obviously, so this is our way of touching base. If the insanity gets too much, just say so and you'll get space. Otherwise, you're part of the family and everything that comes with it. Including always having each other's backs."
