The Perils of Knowing Stuff (open to Kelly and Melissa)
Not long after her arrival in New York, Beatrice Dayspring was walking down the street to her hotel after handling some business at the local SSI office.

Sometimes she hated 'conveniently' knowing all kinds of things about the people who passed through her Personal Space. That cutie over there had some unfortunate medical conditions, for instance. And the guy who just passed was on heroin, and -- and the two women over there were carrying a total of seven guns, four knives, and not a single permit.

Beatrice couldn't help but slow down to give them a second look.

"Hey, this could be an experiment. If you got a lab coat and a clipboard you could pretend to be a scientist. I could do her for you and report back on my findings." she grins, hoping Bea will twitch again. Bea seems okay, but rather uptight, and they need to fix this if they're all going to work together.

"So, you got any other mystics in your group, Bea? I should probably know what I'm up against in that department before I go to the meeting and find out everyone likes their fluffy bunny-and-rainbows magic." Melissa says, a note disgust in her voice.

Bea has to put down her coffee cup for a moment to prevent spilling.
"That's really, really, not necessary." She frowns slightly at Kelly. "And I don't take after Dad. If i did, I'd be on Providence, trying to drag the human-slash-mutant race into a brighter tomorrow."

"Mystics don't tend to be drawn to employment at SSI. There are no particularly pro-rainbow company policies. But any hurting-innocent-people type magic would definitely not be condoned at all. We're a legit operation."

"Wow, baby, that's hot. If my sister here isn't up for it, maybe we can pick up a chick at the firing range?" Yeah, she's probably kidding. Probably.

"Hey, I've got no complaints so far, Sis. You obviously have some of Mom in there too, though I only know her or her boyfriend by mission reports and dossiers. You'll have to introduce us some time, by the way. Just because I'd love to see her expression when she found out about me. That, and she owes me some birthdays."

"I heard about that Providence place on the news. Is it really the paradise everyone says it is? I mean, I heard they got a drug to make it so mutants don't have to be mutants anymore. Have you really seen anyone who's interested in that?" Melissa asks.

She's not a mutant herself, but Melissa knew a couple of kids that might have been.

"Hey, I only hurt people who come after me first. Otherwise, I try to be decent. The whole live and let live thing, you know?"

"So she doesn't know." Discipline keeps the 'oh, thank any gods that could possibly be relevant' out of her voice. Mostly.

"Providence is a lovely place and Dad and his staff work hard to give people there a good life. When it comes to that ... I have no idea what Dad is thinking there. Yes, there are a lot of people who could use a treatment for dangerous abilities they can't control, but the project itself is a disaster or massive exploitation job waiting to happen."

"Always good to hear."

"Hey, just a second. Let's rewind a little." Melissa says, actually making the finger gesture for rewinding.

"Kelly, how could your mom /not/ know she was pregnant? Way I hear it, that's one of those things that you and the people around you tend to notice when it happens. My mom always said carrying me was the best and worst exercise she ever had." Melissa says.

"I'm thinking that means she wasn't," Bea says, still relieved. "Probably some of the usual sort of pieces of scum wanted Wade Wilson's healing factor and Mom's luck tricks in the same person and cobbled it together, huh?" She looked at Kelly questioningly.

Kelly ponders. "Actually, I think it was mostly that Mom ticked off Weapon-X so bad, beating up on all their mercenaries and all, that they thought it would be really funny to make a clone using her DNA and the one person in the universe she was least likely to ever sleep with. The luck was just a bonus in the clone-soup."

"Okay. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say we need to arrange a family get together that ends with us blowing Weapon X to pieces. Besides, I have a score to settle with one of the assholes that attacked us." Melissa says, thinking of Donovan.

Kelly shrugs. "I dunno, wasn't that bad a place to grow up. I got an uzi for my first birthday, they let me play with knives and drink beer /way/ below legal age. I don't know how they got through the terrible twos. Really, had nothing against them til they decided that I wasn't allow to explore my horizons and job opportunities a little. After all, every four year old needs to leave the nest a little, right? I think that's when they say that kids start developing a wider world view and human empathy... or was it five? Cause if it is, next year is going to suck."

Mel loves listening to her girlfriend ramble. She always talks about the oddest things, but she makes them so interesting somehow.

Of course, it's all interesting until Kelly mentions something about four year-olds. Then five year-olds. They've never talked about kids so this is a really odd topic for Kelly to bring up, especially in front of company...and then Melissa realizes Kelly's talking about herself.

"Wait, what?" she says, blinking at Kelly.

This is indeed all weirding Bea out like crazy, but at least she knows a little of her ground with Insane Experiments as she listens to Kelly.

"...So they managed to get you up to the developmental equivalent of, what, 14 or 15 before popping the cork on the machines? How long have you been away from them? And where does losing your abilities fit in?"

Kelly shrugs like this is all perfectly normal, before leaning over to kiss her girlfriend's neck and up her jaw. "Yup, sorry, baby, you're dating jailbait."
She nods to Bea. "Yeah, something like that. Evil scientists don't like diapers, so they just kind of kept me in the soup til they hyper-aged me up to, I dunno... your guess is probably as good as any. Just hard-wired all the important stuff directly into my brain... the recipe for C4, how to disassemble and reassemble an M-16 in fifteen seconds, blindfolded, the names and addresses of every national dignitary on the planet... you know, the stuff most kids have to go to Kidnergarten for. Took them a little while to work around the brain cancer, but dad's healing factor takes care of it. So anyway, yeah, the brain cancer is important later in the compelling narrative... see, they also programmed loyalty to the the program in, never even occurred to me to ask when I got paid or if I got breaks in sniper duty or who my union rep was. So, see, then we have an assignment against the X-Men, and one of them is some sort of mutant neutralizer. He stops my powers, and my brain shuts off. Being the sappily nice people they are, they take me to their medbay. I mean, sure, they put cuffs on me and take my guns and stuff, but seriously, c'mon... my sex toys are harder to break out of then their max security. No wonder the bad guys keep coming back time after time. Seriously, if some of those goodie-goodies just loosened up and went to a B&D club now and then, they'd know how to tie someone up."

She takes a sip of her coffee-colored sugar and continues. "So anyway, I find a couple of x-brats who, I swear, are NEVER going to get laid, find out where I'm at but not much else. So I break out of there. I thought about going back to Weapon X, then realized I didn't feel the need. Guessing the cancer ate some of those loyalty programs before my healing factor kicked back in and kicked it back to just ugly blotches on the brain. So anyway, that's when I went freelance, met the redhead, then, of course, ran into my baby here. Shortly after that I ran into dad while killing pirates, but he mostly blew up. I stuck his head in a bowling ball, but it totally didn't work as advertised, so I left him at the bowling alley where he could at least do something constructive. The rest is history."

"Okay, since I'm learning all sorts of new things here..." Melissa says, the kisses on her neck and jaw momentarily distracting her (damn Kelly, for knowing how to do that so well), "I'm sorry. I thought I heard the words 'brain cancer'.

Your powers are holding /that/ at bay even while you heal from bullets, knife wounds and drill holes?" Melissa asks, a little incredulously.

Kelly nods. "Inoperable, severe brain cancer, multiple tumors. I've named them Laverne, Shirley and Lumpy." she agrees. "My healing factor would be faster if it wasn't fighting the brain lumps. My dad has cancer too, that's why his face looks like that... its not that he wasn't fully healed, that is normal. Wait, ok, normally he's attached to a body, so its not normal... but the body is just as ugly. I just haven't gotten around to going scuba diving for his body yet. Kinda puts things in perspective though. Comparitively speaking, pistol bullets kind of tickle."

"Wow. Okay. I think I'll drop this topic now and ask about other stuff I've been meaning to ask you later." Melissa says, not wanting to get into deeper discussion in front of Bea. No one wants to hear relationship questions and the like.

Especially not family.

"That baggage shouldn't clash much with what's already on our figurative carousel. And I'll tell him. He won't mind discretion. I'd say they couldn't be weirder than my Dad's side of the family, but that'd be asking for it. Somehow, someway, you'd turn out to be my sister, too."

Bea's comment is off-hand and meant as a jest at their situation, but it strikes a chord in Melissa again as she thinks of Bree. She looks up at Bea, suddenly somewhat sad.

"If you believe in God, or any other deity, pray to him that such doesn't turn out to be true. The only thing worse than bein' on the other end of my gun is sharin' my blood. I wouldn't wish that on you." Melissa says genuinely.
