Adrift in the Sea of Humanity (open)
Kalypso sat at a table in a small cafe not too far from where her brother taught classes. She had sent him a message to meet her here for a cup of coffee and to catch up. He didn't respond so she didn't know if he would show, but she was fine if he didn't show. There were times Kal just liked to sit in the middle of the sea of humanity and feel like she was one of them for awhile.

Her favorite place to collect her thoughts was looking down on the Earth from the edge of space, but it made her feel more removed from humanity than she already was. Here, sitting among the masses, she could pretend she was still one of them even though she would never be again. She felt herself pulling away from the human race further and further each day since the day she had found out that she would literally live forever.

She looked like them, but she wasn't human. She no longer needed to eat, sleep or even breathe. She wouldn't die unless her atoms were scattered over a large enough distance and she wouldn't get sick or succumb to the ravages of time and old age. She would remain like she was forever.

It was a scary thought.

Humans dreamed of living forever, but the more Kal realized she would live forever and the more she thought about it, the more she began to dislike it. The only people she wouldn't have to watch grow old and die were other Eternals and gods. Everyone else she knew would live out their mortal lives and die, returning to the Earth from whence they came.

The more she thought about such things, the more she felt herself pulling away from her mortal cousins. Jack kept her grounded in humanity and helped her keep what remaining humanity she had left, but one day he too would be gone and the split from the human world would be complete.

Kal sipped her coffee. Such maudlin thoughts. She needed to think of something happier. Something other than not being human. She turned her attention to the people outside on the street and watched them.

"Oh, really? The Avengers are pretty cool! I've heard about them." he says.

"So, what's your favorite thing to do?" he asks.

Kal nodded. "Sersi is my mother. She was an Avenger for some time. I'm a reserve member at the moment."

"I really like going to the upper limits of the atmosphere and looking down at the Earth. Everything looks so peaceful from there."

She smiled.

"What about you?"

Ben blinks for just a moment, not sure if he heard her right? She's an /Avenger/?

Suddenly, he had an idea.

"Okay, did you just say you're an Avenger?" he asks quietly, leaning in close.

"I'm supposed to find an interesting person to interview for my Journalism class at school, and I don't think anyone will be able to top an Avenger. Is there a way you might consider a small interview with me? I swear, it'll be harmless. I really don't want to fail my class, especially since people usually don't meet the Avengers unless their in trouble.

Think of it as a...community outreach program." he offers.

"I'm flattered, but I am only a reserve member. I could probably get you an interview with one of the adult Avengers. Captain America? Iron Man? Black Widow? Wouldn't any of them be better than a reservist for the junior team?"

"They might do well for my semester project, but...I think it might be worthwhile to hear from someone closer to us in age. By 'us' I mean my classmates. The Avengers have been in the business for /years/ and there's a debate going that a lot of them are out of touch with today's generation." Ben says.

"I'd like to get the take of some of the new age heroes to see what they think on the matter." he tells her.

"Okay, I understand that. How about one of the younger full time Avengers? Captain America's son? I just think you would do better with a full time member."

"Well, if you insist, I'll do it...but I really would also like to interview you as the counter-point. Full-time Avengers are always on duty. That's one viewpoint.

You, on the other hand, spend your time around people more. Surely, you've heard what others think about the Avengers and the other super-teams out there. Maybe you have some opinions of your own?" he asks.

Kal considered it for a few moments. It would be easy to say yes, but lately she had been feeling more distant from humanity.

"I suppose it wouldn't hurt," she finally said. "I would like to help a budding reporter."

"Thank you /so/ much, Kalypso. I really think the two viewpoints will make a good contrast for my report. Besides, no one will be able to believe I got to speak with /two/ Avengers!" he says, imagining the A-plus he'd get for this already.

Kal smiled. "You're welcome. If you want to give me your contact info, I can contact you after I speak to James Rogers about an interview."

"Awesome." Ben says, pulling out a business card that he made in his Graphic Design class. His skills with Photoshop are pretty good, and the card has his name, phone number and e-mail address.

"Thank you again, Kalypso. I appreciate it." he tells her.

Kal took the offered card and tucked it in a pocket. "You're welcome. I'm glad I can help."
