All Hallow's Eve (open to all)
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

In Los Angeles and Hollywood it could be said that every day was like Halloween. People were always dressed up and most were costumes. On Halloween just about everyone dressed up, not just the normal ones.

Zoey had decided to go as Kid Hulk this year. She had Marlow cast a spell on her to make her green and was looking forward to going trick or treating with Big Green. Big Green and Little Green would hit as many houses as they could and get as much candy as they could.

Not having trick or treaters so far from the city did nothing to dampen Marlow's enthusiasm. She put on her jungle girl outfit and left treats at every cottage door and at bedroom doors in the main house.

After magicking her hair red and longer, Dawn had then magicked up a sword and chainmail bikini for herself, to be Red Sonja.

“Yes like people walking around outside at night in costumes and passing out candy on Samhain.” He wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t seen it himself.

"Huh, yeah, I guess this would be pretty strange to you," Dawn mused.

"I've always loved Halloween, really. Always had great costumes."

"Sounds pretty good," Dawn said. "Though I'm pretty fond of the American version too. Which has its roots in all kinds of other traditions, so it's pretty much a mish-mash."

“I don’t know,” Eiltin said, “Not really fond of wearing all those layers that you guys like to wear.” Typically all he would wear around the compound was a loin cloth or compression shorts and Grace seem to not mind at all that he was just wearing that.

"Well, it doesn't have to be a big one," Dawn said. "I mean, I'm barely wearing anything here."

When had she gotten the confidence to do that? Maybe she was coming out of her shell or something.

Eiltin didn’t get why people seemed to be dressing up in costumes and hadn’t dressed in one himself though most people would probably think what he regularly wore was a good costume. He had asked if he could make a bonfire on the beach sort of like what he would have done back home for Samhain.

Halbjorn has learned his lesson. Staying home leads to weirdness and candy, the former not the good kind, while the latter he really doesn't care for any more than he does any thing else sweeter than mead.

This year he goes out partying. His normal clothes apparently work just fine as a costume.
