Dinner and Secrets
After a cold shower (necessary between the hot day and the hot Iason), and a short nap (stress and the lack of sleep for a couple of weeks), Sammy was at her parents' front door ready for dinner and discussions about the past and the future.

"Is that why you put me with the Avengers?" Her blue eyes twinkled at him. It was only reasonable. Anya Stark would have control of Stark Inc. one day, and since SHIELD got most of its tech from Stark Inc., Anya would have a say in who ran SHIELD when their fathers were gone. Despite the age difference, the more the two girls knew each other and what the other was capable of, the better it looked for the future of SHIELD. Dad was always a couple of leaps ahead.

Sammy knew she had a lot of hard work ahead anyway. Nepotism failed once. By the time Dad was ready to retire, Sammy intended to have been his right hand for a good number of years and learning the job directly from the source.

"Might as well get t' know the ones who will be causin' ya headaches later on. It'll make it easier t' deal with 'em later."

With any luck, they wouldn't give Sammy half as much trouble as their parents gave him.

"And they're well aware of the fact that if they tick me off, I have at least sixty seconds to make them sorry they did." Her smile was sunny. Turning somebody's shower into a dye bath while they were in it was real talent.

Nick grinned. That's his girl. "I have no doubt you'll do just that."

Nick turned off the computer. "Think yer Ma's ready for us by now?"

"She's been ready for us a long time," Sammy said, rising to her feet and waiting for the old man. "We've never been ready for her."

"No truer words have been spoken," Nick chuckled and stood up. "We're luck to have her."

Valentina had heard Sammy arrive and go directly to Nick's office. SOP for their little girl. Sammy was a Daddy's Girl and that's how it was.

She lingered over putting dinner on the table waiting for them to have their talk. Sammy's grades and the latest development of Mikel's entry into her life were the topics for the events for the evening. As well as Sammy's unexpected and understandable need for a summer off.

She smiled as they entered the kitchen. "I was beginning to wonder if you were trying to get out of having salad with dinner," she teased Nick easily.

"I wouldn't let him get away with that," Sammy assured her. "He has to eat his greens."

"Still don't know why ya think I need t' eat somethin' green," Nick grumbled. "Steak an' potatoes are just fine."

Nick knew he'd end up eating whatever was put in front of him, green or not, but he still had to complain about it. It was part of the dinner routine and he loved the banter.

"Complaining only gets you an extra helping." Val ran her fingers through his hair as she put a plate on the table. "There is dessert."

Sammy made a show of covering her eyes. She'd seen this act before. Her parents had to be on their second honeymoon all the time. "Mikel sends his regards, Mom."

"I'll eat whatever ya put in font o' me as long as I can have you for dessert." Nick gave her a fond smile. He was a very lucky man to have two wonderful women in his life.

Val answered that with a kiss.

She finished serving the food and took her seat between Nick and Sammy. "That was nice of him," she said, giving Nick a look. "Did he say how long he was going to be in town?"

"A couple of days." She didn't miss the look. "He said he wants to get to know me. Not in the creepy sort of way. I hope."

"Nothin' wrong with him gettin' t' know her better," he said. He had already sent orders to have a tail put on his son.

Val nodded. If Nick could be so cool about it, then she knew he had other measures in place. "You're smart, sweetheart. Your...how does Logan put it? Your bullshit detector is fully functional." She smiled at her daughter. "You Furys all tend to be stubborn."

"And bastards," Sammy said cheerfully, plunging her fork into the salad. She didn't mind the greens so much, though it was protein she craved when she pushed herself in learning the ins and outs of freezing time.

"I'm pretty sure he won't call. He met me once, satisfied his curiosity, and now he's gone. I'm not all that interesting to him, probably. What I did want to talk about is taking the summer off from school and the academy to relax and focus on my training with the Avengers beta team. I held a freeze for nearly ninety seconds, Mom. Uncle Steve says I might be able to extend it to two full minutes by the end of the year."

Nick nodded. "Don't want ya pushin' yerself, honey. Do what ya need t' do."
