Valentine's Day - Japan Style
Hajime got up, and went about as close to his normal routine as he could. Work out til he was almost falling over, then draw the sword 1000 times, insisting upon perfect draws each time, just as the swordmasters had demanded.

The holiday doesn't change a thing - for a couple reasons.
1. in Japan, girls get gifts for the guys, the romance and expectations of the day are almost entirely one sided.
2. 1 is rendered moot by the fact he'd have no idea what a valentine, or a day dedicated to it were anyway.

That, of course, doesn't mean nothing is happening about BH6 HQ in the meanwhile, among those with slightly less self-abusive morning routines than Hajime.

To say that Kikuya was excited would be an understatement; she was actually almost giddy about Valentine's Day and had taken great efforts and pains to get something nice for Hajime-sama. She had ultimately gotten him some books---poetry and philosophy, tea--that she would make for him, of course, and an almost painfully beautiful kimono that he could wear when they were alone in the evenings.

She had each item wrapped in the Western traditional pinks, which complimented her kimono, with its cherry blossoms, that she wore as she sat patiently in HQ waiting for him.

She couldn't help but be smiling from ear to ear.

He walks in, and can't help but notice... pink? Wrapping paper? Ribbon and bows?

As always, he notices her perfect grace and presentation - but that, at least, is merely a marvel, not an oddity.

"Kikiuya-chan... does this... have something to do with our magical girl? Or these things called pokemons? Or... am I missing some festival?"

"It is Valentine's Day, Hajime-sama. It is a day to celebrate love and other affection." She held out the packages for him. "It is a Western tradition. For you, Hajime-sama." She bowed.

He bows deeply, then, before touching a thing she has made contact with, he kneels, presenting his hands so she can ensure they're clean. His hands are far less scarred and callused than the first time they met - testimony to her fine work and care.

He's just caught up enough in archaic propriety, ceremony, wondering about this holiday - that he skips right over the whole "l" word aspect.

"This is very generous, Kikuya-chan."

Blink. Oh yeah - something that's good to know.

"Will the others have some expectation of me for this holiday that I should be aware of? I would not wish to insult them."

"Oh no! No. Here the women give gifts to those they have affection for, Hajime-sama. You are to be treated well this day. If you will permit it, I have a special meal for you this evening."

She is still smiling at him.

"I hope you find my gifts satisfactory, Hajime-sama."

He bows deeply and formally again, letting her finish with his hands before he accepts the first gift.

"Ahh, I see. As always, you take such good care of me. Yes, I would be most honored, though I find it difficult to imagine something even more special than your usual perfection."

"Beautiful flower,
You make every day special.
The gifts are lovely."

He peruses the items in front of him, finding one of the books of poetry, opening the cover delicately, perusing the first of the works.

"This pleases me greatly. If there is time amidst the plans today, perhaps you will read some from this book that you like to me?"

Amiko steps into the room holding a bunch of candy bars. "Oh, hello. Sorry to interrupt." She sets one dark chocolate candy bar -- shade grown; some boy at Xavier's had sent her a Concerned Letter once when she sent Misha sun-grown chocolate -- on the table. "I see Kikuya has explained about the holiday. Don't worry, this is just given as a friend, and I don't mean to pressure you for next month." She smiles.

"Oh, no interruption. We are enjoying breakfast, and thank you."

He pauses.

"Kikuya-chan has not explained 'next month' yet."

Kikuya maintained her composure though the idea of Howaito dē made her skin crawl a bit. She was giving gifts to Hajime-sama out of love, not out of need for reciprocity. But, Amiko, being of a more contemporary generation, had brought it up and Kikuya felt honor-bound to explain.

"March 14th is Howaito dē, White Day. It is the day upon which gentlemen who receive gifts--honmei choco or giri choco such as what Amiko has provided to you present gifts to the girls who were kind to them this day."

She lowered her eyes.

"But you are not obligated to do anything for me, Hajime-sama. Serving you is a daily gift."

If one was watching carefully one might notice a slight sag in Kikuya's shoulders as she bowed her head in respect.

He looks between both girls. Something seems a little off, but he can't quite place what it is.

And then, without intending to, he neatly evades the issue.

"As you are handling my accounts, Kikuya-chan, can you please see that anyone that is supposed to receive gifts from me upon this other holiday are given suitable ones?"

That seems far easier than trying to comprehend these modern people and their love festivals.

"You're welcome. And that's a nice plan, but of course, no pressure. Sorry to get the explanation all out of order for you."

...Kikuya looked somewhat upset. Amiko felt a little bad for interrupting now.

"I...will let you two enjoy breakfast while I find the other boys."

"Of course Hajime-sama," she says with her impeccable politeness then nods at Amiko. "I believe the school children are bestowing upon Grogg their traditional show of love if you are looking for him."

"Thank you both. And, I understand that today is very busy. I do hope you will join us for breakfast one day soon, Amiko-san. Kikuya's tea service is a marvel to behold. And I should thank you again for the wonderful hospitality here."

Outside of the headquarters, a school bus pulls up, primary school children filing out excitedly. They split into two groups. The girls hold up a box (although 'crate' might be more fitting, in spite of its decorations) and an over-sized handmade card.

The boys line up behind them as a chorus, and, on cue, loudly call out. "GROGG-KUN! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!"

Provided there weren't any emergencies going on and that his alarm clock went off, Grogg's schedule was quite knowable. He got up, had breakfast, got ready, and took the train to downtown, and walked to the team's headquarters.

Grogg's face split into a grin when he saw the children. This was much better than smashing buildings and getting beaten by the stupid lizard.

"Oh, thank-you, little childrens! Grogg love you all!"

Amiko will watch Grogg accept his present from the doorway, and be waiting for him with a large bar of chocolate with nuts in it.

After taking several pictures with them and making certain all the children had received a hug, Grogg had to tell them, "Grogg sorry, childrens, but Grogg must go to work now. Thank-you all for gifts!"

He plodded over toward the door. "Good morning, Missy Kobayashi!"
