Scorpio's Sting
Mikel Fury had held his breath when they passed through the main security checkpoint to S.H.I.E.L.D. Central. He knew Sammy would get through with no problems since she was Daddy’s Little Girl and Golden Child, but he the rest of his team could have been a huge problem. He didn't need the mission failing before they got a foot in the door. Thankfully Aquarius and Sagittarius made getting in a lot easier with the use of their powers.

Mikel had selected well when he put his team together.

The team entered the elevator and Mikel pushed the button for the top floor. The Old Man was waiting and Mikel was sure that by now he knew Mikel was in the building.

If the day wasn't busy enough, having the security protocols set in motion and then stood down was one more thing Val had to check on shortly. She didn't hurry to do it, though perhaps she should have. Nick would be taking care of his wayward son, though Mikel's audacity at coming to S.H.I.E.L.D. amazed her. He had never lacked for nerve in the old days and the trait seemed to hold true now.

At the tap, she assumed it was one of her guards and called out, "Enter."

The door opens, at first no one passes, at least evidently. A few moments later, a young woman dressed in black drops down besides the desk where Val has no cover. She has a silenced pistol in one hand. "Contessa, we don't have much time. Please believe that if I wanted you dead, you would be, and that my reflexes are faster than yours. You will not have a chance to press the alarms... even if they weren't disabled. Your daughter is in grave danger, to say nothing of Col. Fury and SHIELD. If anyone is going to make it out of this, I need to ask a huge favor of you."

	Val froze where she was, hand in mid-reach for her weapon. Sammy would be the club this young woman would use to beat her with. Without her daughter to consider, Val might have taken her chances. "Talk," she advised the woman in a low, warning voice. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Talia breathes a sigh of relief. This could have gone very badly. "Mikel has the Zodiac Key, and has assembled a new human Zodiac. Your daughter has been brainwashed by a mutant telepath to believe she's the new Capricorn. They've successfully paralyzed SHIELD. I've infiltrated them, but am still gathering the resources necessary to put a stop to them. At the moment, any attempt to stop them would result in time stoppage, realistic illusions... essentially futility. Any resistance will get people killed, and accomplish nothing. However, Mikel and Sammy don't want you dead... I want to use that. I have with me sedative pills... they'll put you into a dreamless sleep for most of a day. If she can't get to your subconscious, she shouldn't be able to brainwash you. When you wake up, you'll be imprisoned. You need to pretend whatever conditioning they put you under worked, and stay quiet and sedate for a little while. Trying to escape will put you and your family at risk... but when this Zodiac does collapse, someone who knows how to run SHIELD and doesn't need deprogramming will be needed to right things with as little chaos as possible to prevent disaster. Your husband and daughter are already falling under their influence... nothing I can do about it."

She reaches into a pouch, withdrawing a small pill bottle and stepping close enough to offer one end of the bottle over. "Now, I'm very invested in you, Contessa. If you don't take these pills, you get brainwashed, the telepath uncovers me from your brain, and everyone is lost. If I don't call in in the next thirty seconds, the next people through that door isn't going to be a double agent. So, what's it going to be?"

Crazy, crazy, crazy ... and still not as crazy as intel she'd worked with in the past. She took the bottle. With what she knew of telepaths, the woman's story would be uncovered. Even if it was a trap for Val, Mikel's paranoia would lead him to take a closer look at the woman's background. Val had helped to train Mikel. She knew what sort of chances Mikel would take and what he would consider expendable.

"Sammy is unharmed?" she asked as she opened the bottle and shook a pill out in her palm.

If she weren't her father's daughter, she'd never have gotten this far. And SHIELD without direction was a dangerous thing. A risk she figured she had to take.
"No. Physically she's fine, but she's going to need extensive deprogramming when this is done. They're using mutant powers... Virgo is very good at this, not even just conventional brainwashing. Within the day, they'll have control of SHIELD. I need to bring you to them, unconscious, but unharmed. Wherever you're held captive, I'm going to try and get you more of these pills. Try and catnap when you can, and when you even suspect Virgo... the blonde bimbo, is around, make sure she doesn't get hold of you without taking one of these."

"Sedative dart, poisoned fingertip claws, chloroform rags, knowledge of a few dozen martial arts moves that put someone out... I've used them all to keep them guessing. Let's me occasionally have friendly chats like this. I promise you, I'll look after your daughter as much as I can without blowing my cover. Just hold tight, keep quiet, and go along with whatever they think you should be doing. I'm going to trust your undercover skills not to get us both killed."

"So you don't need to break my nose and smear blood around for the effect." She leaned back in her chair at the first trickle of sleepiness made her eyelids feel heavy. "This chat will be considered friendly when this is over. If Mikel has truly succeeded in brainwashing Sammy...don't turn your back on her and never assume you're alone."

Why couldn't she get pills like this from the doctor when she had trouble sleeping? "Push Sammy beyond her limit and she'll be useless for at least a day. Four times close together, she won't recover fast enough. Adrenaline surges will do it."

"I'll keep that in mind. Mikel and Virgo have her using it on command. Given the right circumstance, I might be able to use that. Thank you. When this is over, I'll help you as much as I can. Until then, I'll keep an eye on Sammy as best I can. Sleep well, Contessa, and good luck to us both. Are there any recording devices in here I need to disable before I drag you back over my shoulder?"

	Val blinked and nodded slowly. She wasn't so far gone as to reach for the controls herself. "Panic buttons, under desk drawer." Forming and speaking words was becoming harder for her. "I'd already dealt with the cameras, the transmissions from this office aren't going anywhere. I'll deal with the rest." she replies, setting herself to doing so and making sure nothing that happened here is going to get out of this office.
"Ares, Scorpio, Capricorn, I have the Contessa. The old girl still has good reflexes. She's not hurt, but she's pretty dosed. Am I clear to bring her up?"
