A Day in the Library
While Sengai was wary about exploring the city, he had been growing rather bored. To help with this anxiety, Giovanna had shown him the Genoshan Consulate's library. Sengai had to admit he was impressed. It was by far the largest collection of books he'd ever seen. Granted he never traveled from home before, but still. What was really astounding was the sheer number of books and articles by mutant authors. Gio had said he could stay in there and read as much as he wanted. She had since left for an assignment and had left Sengai to his own devices. He was currently reading an article by a Samuel Tyler, an advocate of a "Seperate, but Equal" approach to human-mutant relations.

Because I'm boring, Sengai. There's nothing all that interesting about me. I find mutants to be interesting and fascinating. It's not a voyeur thing, though. It's more admiration." Sengai laughs at her insistence. "Very well then..Nell." Sengai frowns a little at that. "My mother once said there's something interesting about everyone, it's simply a matter of finding out what it is. As for being a mutant..it's not as romantic as you may believe. Half my life people called me 'Demon-eyes' and I didn't dare go near anything that gave off energy for fear of losing control and hurting someone. Being a mutant is more a burden than a gift."

"Believe me, it's more than simply seeing it as well. One of our few neighbors owned a truck. Mother and I went into town one day. I got too close to it..my powers absorbed the power inside causing something within to explode. Several people were injured. My father literally came for us and literally fought his way out of there. We had to leave for an even more remote home." sengai says all of this with a detached calm that belies how much he truly hated what happened. He does smile when she says his eyes aren't demonic-looking. "That is what makes you interesting, Nell. Despite being human you have a passion for mutant rights and an accepting character. I'd hardly call that boring."

"I admit I know little of what a social worker does, but from what I've been told it's an important job that does tangible good for those that need it. As for not drinking, I see little reason that would be make you less interesting. I do not drink either. I see little reason to have my perceptions altered or inhibitions lessened." Sengai smiles. "Besides, 'unusual' is more often than not just another word for 'interesting.'

"It's a copy of an article written by a Samuel Tyler, a sociologist of some kind. He believes that the only reasonable solution is to keep humanity and mutants seperate from each other in their own nations. Some of what he says makes sense, but I can't bring myself to endorse it." Sengai decides it's okay to tell her. "My mother is human. I'd rather not think of a world in which I'd have to be seperate from her."

Nell wrinkles up her nose at the idea of separate but equal.

"Yeah, that whole separate thing doesn't fly. The United States tried that once. REALLY not a good idea. It's total crap."

Her indignance fades a bit when Sengai speaks of his mother though.

"People forget sometimes that the majority of mutants...don't come mutant origins. I know a guy whose parents are both mutants and he's not. Genetically, we're just variants of each other, not all that different from eye color or hair color. I kind of hate the terms mutant and human. We're just people.

"Your mom, she must be cool."

"We would all be better off if more people had the wisdom to realize what you do." Sengai smiles at the mention of his mother. "Yes, she is. She was hesitant at first to send me here. She was afraid I'd stop seeing her as my mother and start seeing her as a 'flatscan'. Again I am sorry for snapping at you at the dinner the other day. It's just what you said rang a little close to home."

He hadn't been this comfortable with a girl since..Priya. The memory inadvertantly brought a frown to his face. He caught himself and hoped she hadn't noticed. "So..you say you have lived in Genosha?"
