Cookout
There had been an invitation for Excalibur to attend a cookout with the Defenders for Independence Day. Quinn was a Brit by birth, but he had spent half of his life in New York. He considered himself a Yankee as well as a Brit.

When it was time he teleported all from Excalibur who wanted to go to the Defenders compound. Quinn was looking forward to a day in the sun, on the beach and watching girls in bikinis with a lot of good food on hand. Not to mention Asgardian mead. It would truly be a wonderful day.

They arrived in a flash right outside the gates to the compound. It was rude to arrive inside the gates and Quinn didn't feel like fighting. He was a lover, not a fighter.

"Ah, friend Griffen. Thou art far from the party. Hast thou a dilemma to solve as well?" Sigurdur asks, smiling down at him.

'No." He shrugs his shoulders. "Crowds have always made me uneasy, even if it's just friends. Sometimes I just need the break. By that I mean space."

"That ist understandable. Space seems to be a thing that many on Midgard require for sanity." Sigurdur says.

"Thine mother ist among the finest of cooks I hath ever encountered. I am glad to partake of her talents." Sigurdur says.

"Our lives can feel.... very intense. So we need to be able to stand back to relax and get our minds refocused," he said with a roll of his shoulders.

"And I think too much. I'm a scientist."

He actually grins up at Sigurdur. "That she is. Mom has always been a good cook. I'm surprised she never remarried, it'd be easy for her to lure someone in, what with her steaks alone."

"While I pray only good fortune for thy mother, I must ask that she does not marry. A man might starve without her." Sigurdur says.

Then he laughs loudly and claps Griffen on the back.

He couldn't help but chuckle.

"She's gotten used to how much you guys need to eat. Mortals require much less food. She just triples what she would make for a mortal."

"She ist fair and intelligent. We art all the better for her kindnesses." Sigurdur says.

"Tell me, friend Griffen; how did thou come to create the defenses for this place? Ist it your task or ist it an...ability thou hast?" Sigurdur asks.

He'd heard something of 'mutants', mortals born with abilities apart from normal people and the hate they endured because of such. It did not make sense to Sigurdur; all were still human and, therefore, related.

"Thou hast great cunning and strength of mind. Not all are gifted with such."

"I've always been smart. There are others like me who are this smart. It's just the way of things. I'm not what you'd call a mutant."

He couldn't read minds either. It was just a matter of understanding that Sigurdur didn't know much about this world.

"Geniuses like myself have been around for a long time. It's why we have these devices that you see us use. Someone thought of it and built it. It's what we should do. Try to improve the world around us. And I... just thought to protect the compound. It's home and I don't want anyone here to get hurt because we didn't see something coming. When we got attacked by that army of the dead and the demon... I wished we had seen it sooner. There had been children here and I never want to see a child hurt."
