In the Deep of the Night
Night had settled over the city of Los Angeles. A waning gibbous mood had risen and the light of the stars was blocked out by the thick smog that usually blanketed the city. The hours moved on and the city slowed down. Citizens were asleep in their beds and off to dreamland.

The same held true for the residents at 1800 Palos Verdes Drive.

They wouldn't stay asleep for long. Something stirred in the darkness outside.

The tank was split down the middle and the men manning it scrambled to get out of the way of the Asgardian. The other tanks turned their turrets and opened fire again.

He lets the men run, unwilling to kill mortals for what may be some godly control - though these contraptions are beginning to annoy him. He staggers a little under the combined fire, then rushes again, overturning a tank with a shoulder tackle.

The metal of the tank crumpled under the impact with the Asgardian and then rolled over. The men crawled out from under them and ran.

The remaining tanks continued to fire.

The impacts sting, and explosions have him half-blind. Battle and blood call to him - but he doesn't want to kill these people. For him, right now, that's a more real fight, against his own nature, than any threat from the tanks.

He throws the axe into the front of one, then lifts another to throw it.

"Flee! Flee mortals whilst thou canst!"

The men inside the tanks did flee when they had the chance. The thrown tank landed with a giant thud and shook the ground a bit.

Halbjorn roars, retrieving his axe and turning his attention to the tanks so the soldiers have time to flee while he tears apart the nearest tank within reach.

The tanks tear apart as easy as tin cans under the axe. It doesn't take long before the tank Hal is working on is a pile of scrap metal.

The lack of noise and explosions helps, as does having something to tear up. He can still smell blood however, and is only halfway himself. His eyes shift towards the remaining fight.

Syd ran out from the main building and spotted Halbjorn. "Hal!" she yelled. "Shadow.../things/ took Svalin!"

Good thing to report - possibly the wrong person to report it too, especially as on edge as he is.

"What?!" he bellows, immediately looking around for anything that might fit the description of 'Shadow things'.

Hal is definitely not all there right now, but at least he's not in blood frenzy yet... yet.

"They appeared out of nowhere, grabbed Svalin and disappeared with her," Syd explained as best as she could. "This all had to be a distraction." She could hear the sounds of fighting coming from the other side of the compound and behind the main building.

Halbjorn sees red. His hands shake, his grip tightens on the axe.

This is no longer just a fight - someone will die for this.

"Tell... V... run." he growls, axe sweeping through the pile of rubble to punctuate the statement. That's all he manages - that, and turning his sights on the Spartans instead of Syd. The next vocalization is a deafening roar.

Halbjorn isn't home any more.

Syd ran. She had been warned of Halbjorn's rages and she could tell he was in one. She ran as fast as she could toward the other Defenders.
