Moonlight duels? What could be more exciting!
Kayura should have been more careful. She should have watched from further off. Or done more research on her computer at home. Things would have gone better. She realized that she was very lucky to be limping into the area reserved for training the next morning.

She didn't feel it. Normally she would dress in demure calf-length skirts with big shapeless tops not wanting to look too pretty or too eye catching. Besides, it was comfortable to dress that way. Today was a pants day though.

And the first time she was going to ask someone for assistance dealing with the supernatural since she had taken over her father's duty. She feels a touch of shame she has to ask for help.

"Hajime-sempai?" He has been here longer than her, he deserves that respect. "May I speak with you?"

She was glad it appeared that they were the only ones here this early in the day. She hadn't slept much after her defeat last night.

This is different for the ghost. He wants to look at his target but does not want to be seen as weak either.

That makes this complicated for him. He knows that one of them has to move.

Then it stops mattering because if he looses, this is okay. He is already dead.

The choice is made so he is prepared to draw his sword now.

Hajime does not like this. Dead or not, the ghost was trying to be a good man, and a soldier.

But he was trained to do this. Drawing the blade is as easy as breathing, and just as natural. Killing is just as easy.

There is a hiss of metal as he draws in time with a release of breath, motion so fast its barely visible as he strikes, trying to be just that split second faster.

Hajime is faster. He had trained for longer after all.

And the Captain is not surprised.

The strike is a perfect bushido strike, upwards at a slight angle, to cut through the guts just under the ribs, then an angled cut down to make sure the opponent does not suffer, a draw bac, a flick of the blade to clean it, and a moment more of staying on guard, in case the opponent strikes by reflex.

"Tell your sister and ancestors you have missed them." he says quietly.

The Captain did not strike back. He felt himself sinking and pain.

But it was the good sort of pain because he knew that he would see his family soon. He had missed them so much.

"I thank... you." And he is at rest once again.

Kayura had been tense the entire time. She couldn't help it even though she knew Hajime-sensi would win.

She relaxed then watched as the ghost dissolved into nothingness. There was not even a sign of ectoplasim which made it even more sure in her mind this was finished.

It made her glad because no more deaths would occur here and she could feel a sense of silence fall over the park. It would get better.

There may be no blood, but Hajime cleans the sword anyway, and returns it to its sheath. Then he lowers to his knees again and prays, silent until he has finished a prayer to the local kami that they may find peace now, to his own ancestors, and to the Captain's ancestors.

Finally, "The stream is much happier now. We should go."

She was silent that whole time. She had never prayed much to anyone or anything but she understood. She respected the Captain because he had been acting for his men and the man who should have become his brother in law.

She gulped in a bit of air and nodded. "In a few days this place will feel normal. The birds will come back here soon too."

She climbs to her feet pocketing the small note book and picking up her backpack.

"Yes." he agrees quietly. "And you have a busy few days ahead of you. This is a lot to research, to make sure the promise is kept."

"Mmm. It shouldn't be that hard to find the information. I'm a history major. That means I can contact some people in Kyoto who should be able to grant me access to any of the old records." Which means she may need to make a trip there since the records are old and fragile.

And it makes sense, next year she will be working on a thesis. Lots of students get started early and she thinks she can accomplish most of this over the course of a two day trip there.

It will still require so much shuffling but she can get started at home tonight. "And my father's library likely has things I can use to get started. What I found today was mostly accurate."

He nods. "Very good. That is your task until you are fully healed. That, and you should begin working on your poetry or painting."

That gets a puzzled look from Kayura.

"Poetry and painting. Why those?"

Se had taken a few art classes while in college because she had thought they were interesting. She wasn't very good at doing anything besides very rough sketches f he was serious though she would have something to do on the trip to Kyoto anyways. Drawing before painting.

She could try driving there but the thought had her mentally grimacing as it was a car accident that killed her parents.

"You work very hard. Your body is fit, and will become more so with training. Your mind is sharp - school assures it. You need to bring your soul in balance.... so part of our lessons will include poetry, painting and music. These are among the 8 tasks expected of a samurai. If your soul is not in balance, your blade will fail you when you earn it."

She knows it will take more than poetry and painting to balance out the problems in her mind right now. She won't say that out loud to Sempai right now though.

It can't hurt to try what he is saying. It might help her until she can work on the other things.

"I'll try."

"No."
He shakes his head.

"You are my student, and the student reflects upon the master. You will succeed. Fix that in your mind first... because when you have won the battle with your own mind and confidence, the brush, the words, the rest... are only a small part of the battle."

She is suddenly and sharply reminded of how serious Hajime really is. About everything really. She is honestly okay with that.

"Then I'll do more than try. I don't like disappointing people."

"I would not have agreed to teach you if I did not already know you could do it. The only person left to disappoint would be yourself. And that would be far more tragic than disappointing me. You can become Samurai, I already believe it. Now it is your turn."

Kayura blinked at him. She just knew she was very tired.

And she had never considered herself a Samurai of any sort. The armor is Samurai armor but it hadn't occurred to her to think like that.

Really? He's waiting, it's getting close to midnight and he expects an answer?

Really? Okay, for her it's early. Normally her hunts last until the early hours of the morning and she crashes after her last afternoon class.

"I know I'll eventually reach the right level in everything. But I don't think of it as becoming a Samurai. I just always thought of it as being the best possible hunter I could be," she admits.

He nods, heading back towards home now. "Good, that will do. The assignment stands, your spirit could use some balancing. By the way - you did very well tonight."

"I--" Acted as she knew was expected. Acted how she had known and needed to act because even though the spirit had killed he was still a good man trying to do the right thing.

"Thank you." She dips her head. "I am sorry I did not think to ask for back up the first time I came here. I did not think he would sense me from where I was. I had not been near the bridge."

He shakes his head. "The man who has never lost, and never made a mistake is a man with nothing to learn from. You made a mistake - and learned from it. Do not be sorry now - be stronger for having survived it. The point stands... last night, you failed. Because of that failure, tonight you had opportunity to excel - and you did so."

It's hard for her to accept that as a compliment to the fact she was learning. It also frustrated her she hadn't done what she was supposed to the first time.

not going to say that though. He was right, she needed to find balance. Find some way to get her head on straight to make things simpler so she wouldn't mess up in the future.

"Mmm." And the hour was late. They should leave.

Now that he's done talking and being patient, he's already moving, the last comments made as he started heading back towards their base. "You will wish to speak with Amiko-sama. She can make arrangements to get you where you need to go quickly, as I understand it. When you are ready, there will be a larger research project I need help with... but that time is not yet."
