A New Page in History
Cape Citadel, Florida, home to a portion of the United States nuclear arsenal.  Notable for being the first public target of the then-terrorist mutant Magneto and the first public appearance of the X-Men who battled him there.  Not especially remarkable in and of itself, but quite notable in that the events there first brought the idea of mutants and the causes involved to the public attention.  It was a day that changed everything.

In the decades since, the stock of mutants has risen and fallen, sometimes with a fair amount of public support, sometimes with even those who called themselves heroes a little afraid to show themselves in public.  In the time since, Magneto had gone from a wanted and hated terrorist to a leader of men, with a nation of his own.  The X-Men continued their fight for mutant rights and equality, trying to show the world that they to, could be heroes.

Today... today was going to be a day for the history books again.

It began with a flash of energy in the middle of the base, a teleportation device, and the appearance of seven women.  One, monstrous like a giant frog.  Another, taller than all the rest and built like a truck.  A slender, pale woman in red and a similar looking woman with blue hair.  Another, a blonde, staying at the fringes.  Another, a beautiful red haired woman.

And last, in crimson and purple armor, cape trailing behind her, and dark helmet upon her head.  She floated on the air on currents of magnetic force, looking at the world like she owned it all.  In scant moments, they defeated the soldiers who came to challenge them, mutant powers making it all too easy.

One of the others, the frog-woman, pulled out a small, camera-like device and pointed it at her.

She raised a hand, and a magnetic force field sprang into existence around the base, bent just enough to allow her transmission through.  It would soon be appearing on every television in the country.

"People of the United States, I am Magneta, daughter of Magneto.  And for too long have you oppressed our people!  Today, as my father once did, we mutants strike back to take what is ours!  My X-Tremists and I have seized your nuclear arsenal.  We demand the total surrender of your government, or else I shall unleash them upon you.  Today is a call for all mutants to join us!  Rise up!  Rise up and join our cause!  Cast down your human oppressors!

To the government of the United States... you have twenty-four hours to abdicate.  You know what shall happen if my terms are not met."

The transmission ended there.

"Now is the perfect time to answer questions. We don't have all the answers - but people know the Genoshans came here, and we have a public address and identity."

"Not something the X-Men have the same kind of luxury on," Rachel said. "I think we'd be lucky not to be blamed for it."

"No matter what we say, or that we helped defeat it, a lot of people will blame us anyway. But standing up to them is the only way lies ever get exposed. There's no luxury involved - but we have a responsibility. Especially in the face of someone claiming to have Magneto's legacy."

"Genosha has nothing to be ashamed of. There is no reason for us to run or hide, Miss Summers." Angelo appears at Andrew's side, wiping blood off one of his knives and sheathing it again.

The barriers finally down, the military from outside the dome was finally able to move in, guns up and at the ready.

"Hands in the air!"

Rikki snarled. "Really?! We save your asses and this is what we get?"

She whispered under her breath. "Goddamn flatscans..."

Sengai simply raises his hands up. His teeth grind a bit as he picks up Rikki's whispered comment.

"Rikki, stay calm," Gio orders. "It's an honest mistake." Irritating as hell, but an honest mistake. "Initial security paranoia is something we have to be able to sympathize with, right? It's just another thing we'll get that slanderous twit for someday."

Gio, her knife put away, kept breathing slowly to keep her hands from sparking too much in her agitation. The American troops wouldn't take that well.

Andrew raises his hands calmly.

"We're with the Genoshan Embassy. The threat has been stopped, but the terrorists got away. We have photographic record of them for checking against records, which I'll share with your superior officer. Please check the base inventory to make sure they didn't escape with anything dangerous."

Misha didn't engage stealth mode, but he kept his face masked. His hands were held out to the side and the armor ready to fire stun blasts if necessary.

Vlad had walked casually over to where the others were, hands in his pockets until he got closer and slowly took them out and raised them, still quite relaxed. "Sadly we can't take bets on this sort of thing because nobody would've bet against it," he whispered to Cait as he stepped just in front of her.

Fred for his part just calmly sat on the ground with his hand partially extended in the air. Despite the tense situation, he was eerily calm.

It would be so damn easy to just blank the soldiers minds for a few minutes. Just long enough to slip away to the Blackbird. No red tape, no judgment and accusations, just a clean getaway. The Professor had done that kind of thing, well, pretty much all the time, in the old days.

But these weren't the old days. Especially not after today.

There had to be some sign of trust.

"And we're the X-Men, Sir," Rachel said, keeping her hands up. Not that she needed her hands. "If you'll contact SHIELD Agent Nicholas Donnelly, our liaison, I'm sure we can work this out."

The guns were not lowered, and the colonel who had given the order didn't take his eyes off them. Damn, but this had all gotten complicated.

"Yeah, until we get some answers I like, I'm asking you all to surrender yourselves.""

It wasn't noticeable, but Rikki was increasing her density, the ground under her feet starting to spread little spider-web cracks.

Someone who knew her, like Angelo or Gio, might notice. But she was slowly simmering to the point where she was going to hit something.

Andrew holds up a hand, briefly, in the general direction of his people. He can guess about Rikki, without looking.

"Surrender is a loaded term, sir. I and my entourage are guests of the UN, and possess diplomatic immunity. I won't waive their rights, nor mine. I will accompany you, and help you get answers to the best of my ability, but not in chains or forced custody. Trying to force the issue is a crime under yours, and international law."
