Adjustment Time
Still bothered five days after the lunch that introduced both a sister and a view of his father Jack didn't realize existed, Jack was spending a lot of time on the roof looking at the New York skyline.

He hadn't picked up a pencil or piece of charcoal in the whole five days.

He'd spent some of them with Dad, in between Matt dealing with Eliza and Mrs. Stark, assuring Dad that everything was okay. In a sense it was. He liked Eliza enough for someone he didn't know much. He wished it didn't feel like Mom was getting the raw end of something.

He hadn't spoken to Kal directly in the last five days. He'd left some messages for her, letting her know Dad was in town and they were handling family business. He even offered to go back to San Francisco with Dad and talk to Mom, but Matt felt this was one discussion that didn't need to include the whole family.

With the sun going down, Jack sent a text Kal's way.

Hey Gorgeous. Lunch or dinner soon?

He stopped to put his hand over hers. "Eliza seems nice, don't get me wrong. She's out of her world, but she's dealing with it. Mrs. Stark and her family took her in. They had another one show up last year so they're used to it."

"Dad, though... It was like he was seeing what might've been if he and Mrs. Stark had made it work. Her son was there, the guy in the papers. Misha. If he and I hadn't been there, they would've been a family all their own. Mom is going to have a fit if she hasn't already."

"At least she seems to be handling it okay. Your dad seems like the resilient type." Kal had met the man once, but Mr. Murdock had a certain air about him. "I can't imagine what it's like for him to have an old girlfriend to come back into his life like this. Your mother, I think, will be more understanding than you think she will be."

She squeezed his hand. "How are you holding up?"

Kal made so much sense, but Jack couldn't forget hearing his father's heartbeat speed up at the sight of Mrs. Stark, or hers skip beats when they arrived at the restaurant. Parents shouldn't be so complicated.

It wasn't the more important thing, though. Eliza's well being was foremost.

"I'm okay." He lifted her hand to kiss her palm before return to setting dinner out. "I gave Eliza my cell number and asked her to call me whenever she wanted. She has a lot to get used to, but she's in good hands. What about you? What have you been doing the last few days. How did finals go?"

"It's ... different." He gave her a rueful smile. "Mom and Dad raised me away from all this, so I have some catching up to do. Come on, tell me about your weekend."

"Which is why it has to have really shaken you up," she said. "You can talk to me, Jack. I'll always be here."

She waved her hand in the air. "It was an interesting weekend. I have a cousin staying with us for awhile. He's nice, but a little clueless because he was raised in Olympia and in space. I also had another cousin pop in for a brief visit."

"I know," he told her. "I appreciate it. I've had a few days to get used to the idea. Just waiting to hear how it went at home."

"Your cousin was raised in Olympia Washington, and space?" The two didn't quite reconcile in his head. "Are they both on Sersi's side of your family?"

"I'm sure your father will let you know if there's any problems."

"Olympia as in the Eternal's city," she clarified. "And in space. His mother is...hard to explain, but she is a cosmic being." She nodded. "Yes, Mom's side of the family."

After alternate dimensional family, cosmic beings were not so daunting.

"Right, the Eternal's city. Sorry, my brain flipped when it should've flopped. How do the two you like having a house guest?"

"It's been just me and Iason. Mom's been MIA for a bit. Though I expect her home anytime."

Kal shrugged. She didn't ask about her mother's activities. In truth, she didn't want to know.

"He wants to become an Avenger so he's been hanging out over there quite a bit. I think he also has a thing for Anya Stark."

"Dad's gone now, so feel free to steal my covers any time." He handed her a set of chopsticks and set the opened containers of food in front of them. "Anya wasn't at lunch with her mother and brother so I haven't met her yet."

She chuckled. "Yes, yes it does. I accept the invitation. Eagerly." She grabbed a container of Lo Mein and dug in.

Jack went for the fried rice. Carbs, good! Especially when he hoped to be expending a lot of energy soon showing Kal just how much he appreciated her. The urge to sketch was coming back the more he relaxed.

When he finished eating, he stretched out on the blanket and watched the sky with a smile on his face.

"I'm thinking that right now is the best I've felt in a week." He took her hand to hold in his and closed his eyes, tracing the elegant shape with his fingertips. He thought he would recognize the touch of her skin if he were blind.

He brought her hand to his lips to taste her skin. "Tell me more about these cousins that showed up. One wants to be an Avenger. What does the other one want?"

"Iason is very young for one of us. Nineteen. He's more powerful than me and the other Eternals."

She sighed. "Sprite is only slightly younger than my mother and he's a prankster. Which means he's up to trouble. It's just a matter of time until something happens."

"Tell me about your sister. What's she like?"

"Eliza is a redhead, like her mother and sister. She goes by Lady Devil, but I'm not sure if she's a mutant or just very agile and quick like Dad. She can't cook, which is a female Romanov trait according to Mikhail Romanov. She seems nice. We'll probably get along just fine."

"That is a great idea. I can always get a hold of her through the Avengers mansion. Mrs. Stark said to stop by any time."

He rolled to his side to look down at her. "Shame your cousin is interested in Anya Stark. We could've double dated. You and me, your cousin, my sister."

"Just in case she doesn't like me, she'll at least have somebody to look at." He traced the line of her jaw. "If your cousin looks anything like you, he'll be pulling the girls off by the handfuls."

"See? I could be the world's worst brother and she won't even notice if she's looking at him." Jack began tracing the outline of her lower lip. "But if he's into Anya, there could be problems. No double dating. I'll invite her to have dinner with me and the wonderful girl I'm dating."
