Mother May I
Eliza was in the living room looking through some family pictures. This was one of the days she missed her family. She ran a finger along the edge of a picture frame before putting it back up. Then just started to flit about the living room with a nervous air. She wanted to see her father badly but had no idea how to do it.

So she flopped down with that dramatic teenage groan that was loud enough for anyone walking by to hear. She was not sulking. She was just merely letting the ceiling know that she didn't know what to do. And also testing the durability of the rug by flopping on it like a long annoyed lump of teenager.

Natasha was taking a break from going through stuff her nephew sent her and was on her way to the kitchen for coffee when she heard the dramatic groan come from the living room. She translated that as teenager for 'I want to talk'. The thousand dollar question was which kid was it?

She refilled her cup and headed for the living room.

"Everything all right?" she asked as she entered. Ah it was Eliza who needed to talk.

She nearly face palms when she hears her mother come in. Not that she was unwilling to talk about this but her relationship with her mother here was way different than the one with her mother in her original reality.

But that was what it boiled down to. She had adjusted to Mom being a different woman here. She had bonded with her enough that Eliza trusted her as completely as she trusted her other Mother. She just hadn't done that with her Dad here.

"I miss Dad. I really want to get to know him here but... I think I'm afraid to get to know him. I hate being afraid of anything so it's cycling into me being mad at myself for being so thick headed over it."

Natasha sat down in the closest chair. "I see."

Eliza was the hard one for Natasha to get to know and bond with. James had grown up without parents and when he met Natasha, he was desperate to get to know a version of his mother. Eliza grew up with her parents around and didn't need that instant bonding. It made things a little tougher.

There was also the whole awkwardness of Eliza being Matt's daughter.

"Your father living on the opposite coast doesn't help matters much, but the holidays are coming up. I could contact him and see what he has planned. Maybe we could arrange something. Maybe something like a short visit."

Natasha gave her what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "I'll even go with you if you don't feel comfortable seeing him on your own."

Eliza sits up and just folds her legs under herself while she watches Natasha. Her hair just has more of a Matt look to it in the right light sometimes too no matter how much more red it was.

It probably didn't help that when Eliza was feeling serious she got this intense look on her face too.

"I had almost asked to go see him on Thanksgiving but I chickened out. I hate feeling like I'm imposing on the life he built with Elektra. Here it's different because Tony has never made me feel like I don't belong... And I don't know Elektra. She was good when we were at Jack's for his birthday but it still feels weird." She smiles weakly. It was silly but she wanted to be liked but knew it was possible and even okay for Elektra to not like her.

She nods a little. "I'd feel better with you there I think."

Natasha could see the traces of Matt in the girl and she'd be lying if she said it didn't affect her. Matt would always be one of those subjects that stirred a slight reaction out of her.

"You never ever have to be scared about asking for something from me or Tony. You're family, plain and simple, and we will do whatever we can for you." And to hear that about Tony making Eliza, and James for that matter, feel welcome brought a small smile to her face. Tony, despite all his flaws and he had many, was a good guy. Natasha was lucky to have him.

"Elektra..." oh there was one who always got a reaction out of Natasha, "was never easy to get to know or like." Natasha choose her words very carefully. "While she may not be as open or accepting as Tony was, I don't believe she'd prevent your father from seeing you or prevent him from spending time with you. She'd really the type you need to give a lot of time to." Compared to Elektra the Widow was warm and open.

"I will gladly go with you."

"He offered to help me with trigonometry," Eliza mutters with a tiny grin flashing over her face. She was horrible at asking for help and Tony had offered to teach her. It was an amazing offer.

Tasha was a bigger person for not saying whatever she really felt. Of course Eliza had no doubt that Elektra would be mature about her feelings for the Black Widow too. "I guess I need to actually get to know her rather than dancing around my insecurity. If I don't do something things won't change and I'll keep missing Dad."

"Tony's a good man, despite what he says or thinks about himself. Not to mention being a genius and liking the whole math thing." Natasha smiled. It was clear to anyone who looked at her that she loved her husband.

Natasha nodded. "Yes and you need to get to know him." Family was important, no matter how weird it was set up and for them weird was normal. "I'm sure Elektra will be fine and give you a fair shot. I'm the one she has a problem with." Which was why if they were going to San Francisco, Natasha would be asking Tony to go along. They needed a neutral referee.

"I think I only thinkI'm bad at math because I dislike it. But my test scores kept proving me wrong," Eliza admits. "I'll study hard too. "

She agrees with her Mom. The look on her face says it. "I know I do. I need to listen to Anya and work on things with Jack too."

She is going to be busy getting to know everyone. But the good thing is she can do her school work at her own pace. She thinks she might take a break from that to work on things with people.

"She's not a bad person. Things just feel complicated around her. I only know a little of her history with you. Enough to know that I won't broach it with either of you."

"Working with Tony will help too," Natasha said. "You are always welcome to invite your brother over to visit. Or if you want to do something, just speak up and Tony and I will make it happen."

Natasha frowned. The kid wouldn't ask, but she deserved to know. She would have to interact with Natasha and Elektra and needed to know why things may feel awkward.

"We have a long history, the two of us, and there was a man involved. That guarantees bad blood. Even though she and Matt are married, well, I guess we've both gotten used to not liking to each other."

"Yeah. He's good." Eliza seems surprised but then beams at Tasha. She was just happy to know Jack could come here. "I... Thanks Mom."

She doesn't go to hug Tasha but she looks like she might. The smile of her face nearly splits her face in two right then.

"Old habits die hard?" Eliza knows that it is old history. She won't ask her Mom to change things. As long as they can be civil she is okay with things. Even though it is weird for Elektra to be married to her Dad.

"You're welcome, sweetheart. This is your home too and we want you to feel comfortable." Natasha returned the smile.

Natasha nodded. "Something like that, but we will deal with the situation and you won't have to worry about us fighting. So don't worry about that, okay?"

Eliza grinned and ducked her head. She looked much happier than before when she had been sulking, though she'll deny that's what it was; at the ceiling.

Now she gets up to move in for a hug. "Thanks Mom. Sometimes I don't know how to ask for what I need... and I need to see Dad."

Eliza buried her nose against Tasha's shoulder. Then looked up. "You know. As a kid I hero worshiped Dad. I wanted to be a lawyer just like him. Suddenly it's not the same. I don't think I should be one. I just haven't decided what I should be."

Though it would be handy to have a lawyer in the family some days.

Natasha looked down and smiled as she brushed some hair back from Eliza's face. "I know. All little girls hero worship their daddies and want to be like them." Natasha had done the same with Ivan even though Ivan wasn't her biological father. Anya was the same with Tony. "Some don't change their minds, like your sister, and some like you decide to be their own person. You can do anything you want. Tony and I will always support your decisions."

Eliza smiled for a moment. "I just know it wouldn't be good for me here. I'll decide on something in the next year or so and go for it. Right now I'm just figuring out what it would mean for me."

She smiles a little. "So if I say I'm thinking of following Misha into a community college until I have what I want to do in mind, you'd be okay? I still need to finish high school but that's my plan."

"Of course, sweetheart. Not everyone knows what they want to do right away. Take some time, get your general education requirements out of the way and then you can decide what you want to do. There's no rush, despite what your sister thinks."

Eliza balances herself near her mother. She is so used to performing acrobatic feats that balancing anywhere to sit is easy. Then again she spends so much time working at keeping in top form.

"Anya just has to stick to her plans. I think she thinks everyone needs one too. But she's a very driven person compared to me and I could never keep up with a plan like that even if I'm sure I could stand the crazy work if I tried."

"It's the Stark side," Natasha told her. "Your sister gets it from Tony. The two could make a regular workaholic look like a slacker." Natasha loved her husband and her other daughter, but even she had trouble keeping up to them. "You just take things at your own pace and in your own way and no one will say anything. If your sister bugs you too much about it, let me know. Sometimes she doesn't know when to quit."

She laughs softly. "I'm sure that I get that bad when it comes to gymnastics. I go at it often. It's just my thing."

Eliza's face twitches in amusement. "I won't let her cow me into going ahead of my own pace Mom. I might let myself get talked into things but that's only because I had been talking myself into them already."

It was so reassuring to hear that from Eliza. It made her worry a little less. Natasha gave her a warm smile. "Good."

"I wanted to talk about the holidays too. I'm not sure how your Mom celebrated, but we usually two celebrations here. Christmas and a traditional Russian New Year. So basically two occasions for gifts and family stuff. If it's too much to deal with, we'll understand."

Eliza wrinkles her nose remembering arguments between Mom and Dad they thought she hadn't heard when she was little. Nothing was ever perfect after all even though things were good.

"I was pretty Americanized despite the languages I picked up," she says with a shake of her head. "I don't mind though. It's not like I have a boyfriend to sneak off to. I like being around the family."

"I...am not too surprised." Matt was Catholic to the core and obstinate to boot.

"I never gave up being a Russian and I believe in keeping traditions. Tony is right when he says I love being a Russian, but don't tell him I said that." She smiled. "So we have two holiday celebrations. Christmas and a Russian New Years. It doesn't mean you have to get more gifts, just don't give them all on Christmas. Save one for New Years."

"It can be a bit much for someone not used to it. If you are seeing someone or dating someone, they are always welcome. The more the merrier."

"I shouldn't be either. Mom compromised with him a lot," Eliza admits. "He thought I should just learn one language besides English since he didn't want me to get distracted from my other school work. Mom talked him into letting me do what I wanted to when it came to lots of stuff. Except when I wanted to join YA."

Oh they had fought each other on that. It has Eliza grinning.

"Hm. That's easy. I have plenty." She giggles suddenly. "I can't wait to see Misha's face."

"I would ask, but I'll let it be a surprise," she said with a smile. "Speaking of gifts, is there anything specific you would like?" Natasha had a few ideas of what to get Eliza, but if there was something specific the girl wanted Natasha would get it for her.
