Civilian Management: Alpha Flight
Before entering the building he reads his personnel file one more time.  Randy was always more intuitive with these files then he was.  If he didn't feel the ex-MP was the only one he could trust Bryan would never have shared a damn thing with a civilian, even if it wasn't Randy's fault.

Jeez, it was a year ago.  They'd sent his fiancĂ©e into so-called a domestic disturbance call.  It turned out to be a hostage situation and the punk targeted Randy.  Being a generous soul, Randy wrote the whole thing off as a bad coincidence - just something that could happen to any cop, much less one around a highly armed population.  Bryan was more cynical.  He thought Sir - his nickname for his dad - might have hand in it.  Randy, of course, make a joke about Bryan's paranoia at the very idea.  What he hadn't told the love of his life is that Sir offered a command and promotion if he found someone more "military wife" material.

Besides, Randy could have been the next Tony Stark.  The Vinicator suit performed a lot better after a week in their basement.

Well Sir, he thought You wanted me serving my country honorably?  How do you like this?   He walks into his new command, literally wrapped in the flag.  Let the fun begin.

//We have quarters big enough for two and we respect boundaries and privacy.// Alex started walking off, not bothering to check to see if the boss was following.

Emily walks through the door, her arms laden with bags, smiling broadly. "I've got presents..." she begins to sing, then drops off as she sees the new person.

"Who's this?" she frowns.

"Emily, this is Lt. Whittaker, he just got here and he's the new Vindicator but he's not going to stay all the time because of Matters at Home." Mel mutters to Emily quietly. She certainly understood about the privacy part; Dad would have died if he'd had to live with Mom here; Lt. Whittakers girlfriend or whatever probably felt the same. But she couldn't go around saying that.

"That's correct, Lt. Whittaker has actual field and command experience, and will be leading field operations from here forward."
Of everyone, Jordan seems to be taking to it pretty well.

Emily drops her bags. Something glass breaks in one of the bags.

"Oh, hell no! You don't just get to waltz in here and claim to be our boss. We already have a leader." She moves up to face off with Whittaker.

"Emily." Jordan's voice is unusually stern. "Yes, he does. We are neither self-funded, nor a democracy. The Department can alter the roster or put anyone they want in charge. Its been an honor to act as leader, and I appreciate the confidence you all put in me, but the Lieutenant has every right to the job."

Emily's eyes narrow, and she looks between Jordan and Whittaker, but doesn't say anything immediately.

He'll take this over questions about his private life. He doesn't flinch in the slightest. "You don't have to like it. I have been assigned to you to try to offer you my experience in keeping soldiers alive. You all are not conventional soldiers, but the odds are the same. Life, death, and the security of a lot of people. I do expect you to respect that basic fact."

She leans in further. "Well, here's a basic fact for you to respect." She points to Jordan. "He's already been doing that! Maybe because he understands that we're not conventional soldiers!"

His voice is completely level. "Bochs now has more time to focus on what he does - and I'm not here to criticize his work."

"I'll be interested to hear what it is the Department thinks I do that I haven't been doing. But I can't argue with someone with field experience stepping in. This is a great team and some great people, Lieutenant, I hope you've heard that as well. As long as it keeps everyone alive, I'm up for trying to help do this job as best we all can."
