Defenders
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill, even in Los Angeles, arguably the most superficial city in the country.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

The Defenders Manor has been decked out with lights, as has most of the grounds. Ohu has made hanging lighting a top priority, and every tree on the grounds -- including the palm trees -- is well lit with multi-colored lights. Despite the warm location, Ohu has made sure that there's plenty of snow on the grounds, too, with a bit of magic. As for the gods themselves, and their mortal keepers...

He's noticed - and tried not to. "Yes, it is, but I'm not hearing what you enjoy about all this. Challenge - sure, but what is Sydney Ashcroft having fun with?"

"Access to that library for starters. I get to go back to school." Syd smiled. "And I get to tease my sister that I got a foot rub and leg rub from Simon Williams."

"Oh, ho! I see how this works! I'm the cheep entertainment!" He leans over her. He's not drunk yet, but he's within the ballpark. "You need to be taught about fun. I am -" He puts one hand to his chest while the other props him up over her. "So boring compared to the vast world out there." He gestures by taking his hand off his chest and gesturing to the TV across the room.

Syd at first chuckled and then he was leaning over her. Close. Too close. She could feel the breath get caught in her chest. "I assure you, Mr. Williams, you are not the cheap entertainment. Just merely something I can hold over my sister's head and torment her with."

She had just enough wine to think about leaning up and kissing him, but thankfully not enough to actually do it. Not to mention she was the biggest chicken in the world.

"Please. Your life is a lot more interesting than mine. I'm one who thinks libraries are the best things ever invented and I could spend days getting lost in a museum. You at least socialize with other people."

"If you can call them people." He leans back. The whole, "my sister finds you sexy," is never encouraging. He returns to her feet. "It's all work, Syd," he finally admits. "Every bit of it."

Syd sighed with relief when he moved back. Any longer and she would have lost all common sense and kissed him. "You still get out and socialize. The highlights of my social life in years have been the blind dates my sister insists on setting me up on." Even though all of the guys were so not her type. "She means well, but they're all her type of guys, not mine."

"So what do you do for fun if all those parties and socializing are work?"

"I didn't say there weren't perks to the Hollywood playboy job," he admits. then he sidesteps the question. "So let's hear about those blind dates." Let's hear how not your type I am.

"You didn't answer the question about what you do for fun," she pointed out. "There's nothing to tell except they're all shallow, self-absorbed, self-centered and egotistical idiots who wouldn't know what to do with a book if they were handed one."

"The world knows what - and generally who - I do for fun." His tone is a mix of humor and a little weariness. "Other than that, I like movies, cartoons, doing charity work, and knocking bad guys into orbit." His muscles ripple as he half shrugs. "In a lot of ways, I'm a big kid doing stuff I never got to do when I was a kid."

"Which means," he says. "You have nothing to fear from me."

Oh she had a lot to be afraid of in regards to him. She knew this and realized this. "I'm not afraid of you," she said trying to sound confident. She was afraid of what could happen with him. That's what scared her.

"You're a good man, Simon Williams. You're kind, considerate, compassionate, and caring."

Why did she have the sudden urge to go back to her room and finish off the bottle of wine and another so she couldn't think?

His hands have resorted to more smooth gliding across her skin then massage. "Yeah..." He sounds less than convinced.

"So, your fun is reading and blind dates. C'mon. You have a kid. There was a time where there was more you did on Saturday night then drink red wine and read until some gods got in trouble. What was it?"

"I never said the blind dates were fun," she pointed out. "In fact, they're pure and utter hell."

She was starting to sober up. She grabbed the bottle and filled her glass. If she sobered up, she'd be more tense and she eventually needed to sleep a little tonight.

"Read. Watch old movies." She smiled. "My sister was the party type. I stayed home and read books, learned languages and watched old movies. I've always been a boring person."

She sipped her wine.

"What old movies?" He gets another glass of his mead before thinking about it. He want to know about Syd's movies - badly.

"Bringing Up Baby? I love that one, Katherine Hepburn was so hot in that." Oops. He drinks a little more, leans back and closes his eyes. "That would be a good look for you. Tomboy in an evening gown surrounded by screwball comedy."

"Sometimes? Sometimes?" He's laughing a bit too much now and needing the couch to prop him up. "I half expect Ohu to bring 'Baby' home - but knowing our luck it will be that lion from Who's that Girl?!"

Syd laughed with him. "Would it be scary to admit that I know what you're talking about?" A drink of wine. "If Ohu brought something home it wouldn't be a lion. He'd bring something like a Mongolian Death Worm home."

"Life isn't fair, but you get to see plenty of others in bikinis. It's so unfair that we'll end up with Mongolian Death Worms as a pet. Because two dogs, a tiger and two horses are not enough." Sanity was definitely overrated.

"I'm at my kid limit," she said. "Godlings and other ones." Syd would firmly say she's done with the natural ones, because the relationship department was quite dead. There were moments when she'd like to not be a mom and just be a person.

'I'm not," he admits. "But it's probably for the best I can't have 'em." He flaps his arms in a sort of shrug. "My luck isn't that good. You're luck is great! Zoey has those gods wrapped round her finger."
