To Mick
Misty Rains was the name she gave the woman who took her information. It was second nature to use that name instead of her real one. She knew that the agents upstairs would find out her real name because it was in the letter she had in her jeans pocket, but before she could correct herself the woman had called up to send someone down to fetch her. "Yes, she says she has information relating to the current DC shootings. No, she won't tell me exactly what but she says the local PD sent her here."

Brie shifted nervously from foot to foot, wondering if this was the right decision. Years ago, back in Texas, she'd had a stalker. Harmless, she thought. More of a secret admirer than something she feared. The incident never went reported and when she'd moved to Washington DC for school, she assumed that she'd left him behind. She hadn't even thought of him for years and wouldn't have if it hadn't been for the letter she'd received a couple days ago.

Somehow Mick always ended up being the person who came down to fetch any visitors. She didn't mind it, though. She actually was the one to offer. She liked the journey down to the first floor, it gave her a nice break to just be on her own for a few minutes to sort things out in her head. She'd had quite a few good break throughs on rides down to the lobby, and she was hoping for one now. Unfortunately, it didn't come.

When she came around the corner, she was surprised to see the pretty blonde girl. Pretty wasn't even the right word. The woman was gorgeous. Not a girl at all, and it was hard for Mick not to notice. Smoothing a hand down along her white v-neck t-shirt she had on beneath her blazer, she went over to the counter and signed the form the secretary had set up for her so that she could just give Brie a badge and take her on upstairs.

Mick was not at all feminine, she was definitely an easily read tomboy. Her slacks were fitted, but not in a girly way, and she had on a pair of Chuck Taylor's instead of dress shoes. Her hair was slightly messy, but in that good sort of way, and the only makeup she had on was a bit of eyeliner, just enough to make her eyes stand out.

When she turned around, she had a vistitor's badge in her hand, and she smiled warmly.

"Misty Rains?" she called out, and she couldn't help but wonder if that was the woman's real name. If it was, Misty's parents had a sense of humor. Mick got the feeling that it wasn't her real name at all, though.

Brie winced to hear the woman say the ridiculous pseudonym. It always sounded so ridiculous when normal people said it out loud. It was in that moment that she decided she would lie about her profession. She didn't think it would really matter in the grand scheme of things and she couldn't bear the thought that this woman would know she slept with men for money. It was too humiliating. Quickly, she tried to slip into a lie and she was good at it, well practiced at the nuances of her craft. She lied to people all the time, feigned interest, played a role, faked an orgasm.

"Oh God," she laughed easily as she walked toward the other. "Have you ever freaked out at authority? That's not even my name. Your receptionist is quite the guard dog and I just blurted the first ridiculous thing that came to my head. I'm Brie Harper." She held out her hand so that she could shake Mick's and really looked at her. She was attractive and not at all what she'd expected. "I thought you'd be a guy."

"I get that a lot, this is a male dominated field," Mick said back as she shook Brie's hand and smiled a little more. It was hard for her not to turn on the charm when she was with an attractive woman. "I'm Agent Michelle James, you can call me Mick, though," she added as she finally let go of Brie's hand. "It's nice to meet you, Brie Harper. Clip this on the collar of your shirt and follow me through security, I'll take you on up and we can talk."

Brie had always been comfortable exerting power over men, but women were different and frequently managed to throw her for a loop. Thanks to her mother, she had fewer defenses built up against them. The smile was disarming and she offered one back that didn't have quite the same wattage.

Clipping the tag onto the collar of her sweater, she smirked down at the name, feeling like it was as good as a scarlett A attached to her chest. Hiking up the stairs, it was clear she was in good shape, keeping up with Mick. "I'm in a male dominated career too. Culinary arts is definitely a man's world. Which is weird because they like us to stay in the kitchen at home, but not if we're going to get paid for it." It was hard not to be a bit of a feminist, seeing the kind fantasies men had about women, acting them out. She wasn't lying completely; she'd come to DC to attend an elite chef academy. But things had gone all wrong.

"Something tells me that you hold your own just fine," Mick said as they headed up the stairs. The elevator would have been quicker, and while Mick had taken it down, she took the stairs back up because it gave her a bit of extra time to talk to Brie alone and build some repore with her. "I can't cook to save my life. I don't even have pot holders, when I make frozen pizzas I just use a fork to get them out of the oven, my Mom keeps saying I'm going to burn myself. But I haven't yet," she said with a bit of a laugh. "She threatens to buy me pot holders every year for my birthday. She always ends up getting something else, though."

Mick was surprisingly easy to talk to and Brie found herself relaxing quickly. It was easy to see that Mick was trained in interview techniques, but Brie hardly thought about that because she was focused on the conversation. The letter in her pocket, however, was stealing some of her attention. It had accused her of being responsible for the recent murders, that it was somehow her fault that women were dying. To think of it made her go silent for a second before she pushed her response forward with a bit of a forced laugh. "Oh? I'm not sure they teach the fork method at the academy."

"It's very difficult, takes a very steady hand," Mick said with a grin as she pushed open the door to the floor of the BAU. She led the way down the hall and towards the conference room since it was empty. It'd be the best place to talk to Brie one on one about why she was there. "So, you have some information about the DC shootings?"

"I don't know if I believe it," she saod as she slipped her hand into her back pocket and pulled out the note for Mick to read. She handed it to her before she sat down in one of the chairs, deflated more like it. She hadn't realized how good it felt to tell someone about that letter, but she was still afraid that she wouldn't be absolved of the guilt it had laid on her.

It read: Brie, I know we haven't talked in awhile. I have to admit that it hurt me when you moved and I wanted to give you some space. But I can't stand by and just watch anymore. Since I can't get through to you any other way, these women are speaking for me. You know the ones. Pretty blondes. They look so much like you, lying on your back. I still love you. Remember that.

Brie watched Mick read it before speaking. "He followed me from Texas."

Mick arched a brow and took the note, quite curious as to what it said. She leaned against the edge of the table and read over the words, and once she was finished she turned her gaze back to Brie.

"You have any idea who sent this?" she asked curiously.

The fact that the writer of the letter followed Brie all of the way to DC told Mick that he was serious. He probably really had killed all of those women, and wasn't simply taking credit to rattle this girl up.

"Do you think it's really the guy who's been shooting those women?" She avoided calling them prostitutes, even though she knew that's what they were. The last thing she wanted to do was draw attention to that part of the murders because she still wasn't prepared to come clean about her own profession. She rolled her lips inward, crushing them together as if concerned about the evenness of her lipstick. "I've been getting letters from him since I was sixteen. I never reported it bcause it never seemed like a problem. He sent me gifts and said nice things." She'd never dated in high school and it had been nice to feel like someone was on her side when things got really bad with her mother. "When I moved here for college, I thought he probably just lost interest."

Saying it all out loud made her feel stupid and she reached for the letter, trying to take it back. "I'm sorry. I'm being paranoid. He's probably just trying to freak me out and this is wasting your time."

"I don't think you're wasting my time at all," Mick said as she kept a hold of the letter and continued to look it over. "This kind of behavior fits the profile we've built, actually. Can you wait here for a moment?" she asked as she lifted her gaze up to look at Brie for a moment. "I'd like to show this to my boss."

Brie wasn't sure exactly what the BAU did, only that she'd been directed there by the police. She stared at the letter in Mick's hand, trying to determine if she was relieved that the agent thought it was important or terrified. She nodded at the request to wait and there she stayed while the other woman walked out. Alone in the room, she felt very closed in, the urge to bolt building up inside of her. She'd been living a few years as a prostitute and her survival instincts were strong. Something told her that this guy would be upset about her going to the cops.

Liam sat in his office, talking to the director on the phone. He was making arrangements for Adam's trial, wanting very much to be there when it went down in a few weeks.

Mick slipped out of the conference room and went over to Liam's office. She got the feeling that Brie wasn't being entirely honest about her profession, but she wasn't about to push the issue on that just yet. She'd speak to Liam first and see what he had to say. With a knock on the doorframe to Liam's office, she poked her head in and held the letter up.

"I think we got something on the shootings," she said, but that was all she offered since he was on the phone. Instead of saying more or going into his office, she just waited for him to beckon her in or to tell her to come back in a few minutes.

He wrapped up on the phone quickly, especially when he heard that there was something new on their current case. Beckoning her inside, he hung up and turned his attention toward her. "Oh really? What sort of something?" He was aware of the possible lead downstairs but he never got his hopes up on those sorts of things. There were plenty of crazies in the world and many loved injecting themselves into criminal investigations.

He leaned forward, eager to hear what information she had for him.

Instead of saying so outright, Mick just went over to his desk and handed him the letter. The man who'd written the letter had followed her a very long way, and that told Mick that he was quite serious about the things he'd said. The fact that the women who were being killed resembled Brie also told her that it was legit, but she'd let Liam decide for himself.

"The woman who brought this in looks a lot like all of the victims," she said quietly.

"Lying on your back?" He quoted with a quirk of his brow as he glanced up at Mick. "This letter doesn't seem very threatening so I doubt this refers to her ending up dead at his hand. Is this woman in the same profession as the others?" They'd need to know her history to start making connections, but even a cursory glance at the letter was enough to know that this was certainly related to their case. Not that he was glad this woman had been drug into the case, but he was incredibly relieved that they had a solid lead. He felt confident that they could wrap this case up quickly now that they had something to go on.

"Well, he's definitely watching her, that much is obvious. Especially if he followed her all of the way here from Texas," Mick said as she leaned against the edge of the desk. "And I'm thinking he's not going to like the fact that she came here to us at all," she added before she bit down on her lower lip. She was quiet as she considered his question about Brie's profession, and after a moment she sighed. "I think she is, she won't say it, but you know... I have a feeling. We're good at reading people here, it's what we do," she said. "She gave this fake name, Misty Rains, big red flag for me."

"Texas is a long way to go for someone. He's certainly obsessed. If what you thought was your significant other started turning tricks, you'd be pretty angry, I suspect. Or at least it seems that this individual is angry. But this would explain the elements of remorse paired with rage." If the unsub was pairing this woman with the women he was killing, then Liam imagined the man to be confused about the feelings he was having.

He glanced over the letter again and then stood up. "I don't suppose it's very polite to flat out ask her if she's a prostitute," he said flatly.

Liam and Mick were on the same wave length of thinking, and she nodded her head in agreement. This was the sort of breakthrough they had been waiting for to get more of a handle on the unsub's behavior. It made sense, now, and though they'd suspected something like this it was nice to have solid evidence.

"No, I don't think it is," she said as she wet her lips. "We could have Wyatt ask her," she joked with a smile before she shook her head. "Let me talk to her. If we all file in there and start bombarding her, she'll just shut down. Maybe if it's just me, she'll feel more apt to open up? Do you think we should put her into protective custody for now? I mean, this guy is walking a very fine line right now. Who knows what will set him off."

"Oh yes, let's spring Wyatt on the poor woman." There was the barest hint of a smile there. He considered the question about putting her into protective custody. "We might want to keep an eye on her, but let's not lead with that. Does she seem afraid?" He trusted Mick's assessment of her demeanor even in the short time she'd spent with the woman. "She might be resistant, especially with her profession--kind of a wild card at this point." Would she hear the word custody and get upset?

"Yeah, you're probably right," Mick said as she crossed her arms over her chest. I'm going to go talk to her, see if I can get her to talk about what she really does."

He nodded firmly, glad that she was going to take this one. "I'll set Wyatt and Aldous to analyzing the handwriting on this letter," he offered and went to find one of them.

Brie was tapping her foot on the floor, waiting for Mick to get back from talking to Liam. The room was making her nervous and she shifted back and forth in her chair before she finally had to stand up and pace. She rubbed her sweaty, nervous palms against the thighs of her jeans as she walked back and forth around the conference table.

Mick slipped back into the conference room with a bottle of water, and she closed the door behind her. She went over to Brie and set the water down before she had a seat.

"We're having that letter analyzed, we're gonna have to keep or for evidence," she explained as she wet her lips. "We think it would be best if you checked in with us, us with you, considering the nature of what's been going on in this guy's head."

The fact that Mick had taken it didn't please Brie, but she'd been the one who'd brought it in so she wasn't going to fault the woman for actually taking it seriously. "Check in with you?" She frowned, stopped her pacing and glanced Mick up and down with caution. "Are you saying he's dangerous, or are you trying to keep an eye on me?" She was naturally suspicious, but she could also sense that this man's problems were amping up and somehow she'd landed in the center of his strange mind. She felt fearful and defiant all at once.

Brie's reaction was quite telling, and Mick was silent for a few moments as he considered her words.

Brie's face showed the surge of fear she felt at Mick's words. For a second, it was almost as if she was going to break down, walking on the precipice of tears. But she held it together, composing herself in the blink of an eye as her spine straightened. "He's had a lot of opportunity to hurt me. He's been sending me letters for years and years. And how are we sure that it's a man? I guess I always assumed it was, but it's possible a woman is stalking me--isn't it?" Maybe stalkers had gaydar too--Brie didn't know.

"He hasn't hurt you yet, but the fact that he's acting out against other women isn't a good thing. Especially with you in mind. You never know what could make this guy snap even more, and yes, we're sure it's a guy. I can tell by the hand writing and the way he uses his words," she explained as she wet her lips. "Do you know what we do here at the BAU? We build profiles on people based on behavior. We really know how to read people. I know you're not being honest with me about yourself, and I understand why. I don't want you to think I'm judging you, I'm not. My mother use to... She did what she had to do to help us get by. That's usually how these things go. It was a fair amount of information all at once and Mick had slipped in the last part quite skillfully. So skillfully, in fact, that Brie didn't really have a chance to get angry before she fully processed it, which was a good thing. Once she got thoroughly pissed off, there was no talking to her. The tension went out of her as she sat down with a plop on the chair behind her, feeling defeated.

"I'm--I wasn't lying about being a chef. That's what I'm supposed to be. That's what I actually am." Because if she thought of herself as a prostitute, she'd be sick. There was something relieving about not having to come clean about it herself though and she shook her head, pressing the heels of her palms up against her forehead. "Christ, this sucks. Is he pissed because I'm fucking guys for money?" Her proper, fake demeanor was dropping away and her real self was shimmering through. She cussed like a sailor. "I don't even like men. If he was any kind of real stalker, you'd think he'd know about shit like that. Jesus fucking Christ." As if it would matter that she didn't date men and that she wouldn't be interested in him.

She was more muttering her tirade to herself rather than Mick and finally she looked up at the other woman. "Sorry. You're right, about just getting by." The comment about her mother made Brie extremely curious, but none of her questions were anywhere near appropriate.

Mick was quiet as Brie went on with her mutterings. She wanted to be sure she caught every little thing the woman said, so only when she was certain that Brie was done talking did she really process all that the woman had said. She'd had a speculation about Brie's sexual preference, and it was good to know she'd been dead on. It also made Mick more interested in Brie, but for the wrong reasons. She had a job to do, and there was no time to think about how she desperately wanted to save this woman. Not just from the unsub, but from her life.

"This type of person twists things for his own benefit. He might think you're into women because you haven't found the right man yet - him. Or maybe he just refuses to see that aspect of you, and writes it off as you enjoy female companionship and friendship. But yes, you sleeping with other men is damaging to his ego. He'd acting out by killing women who remind him of you. So you can see why we're wanting to make sure that you're safe. I would like to know you were safe."

She looked disgusted with the description of the man. Before, he'd been so kind in his letters and Brie had reveled in the notion that someone in her life (albeit from a distance) was on her side. "I used to re-read his letters when it got really bad with my mom. I--I actually still have them." She spoke with hesitation, wondering if Mick was going to think she was stupid or weak for having kept something from someone who was murdering people now.

The talk about safety made her shiver. She didn't really know what 'safe' meant anymore. Her job was rife with risks and she'd accepted those because the money was pretty good. "You know, I'm used to the possibility of getting hurt. Exactly what would this checking-in entail?"

"For me, I'd want to put you up in a hotel with an agent at the door. But I can tell you aren't the type of woman who would go for that. You're very independent, and being holed up like that would probably drive you crazy," Mick said with a soft sigh. "So... Maybe just some phonecalls to check in. Maybe I can drop by from time to time to see how you are doing. And those letters - do you think you could let us have them? We could probably learn a lot from them."

"It'd be you dropping in?" She didn't want some stranger given carte blanche to intrude on her space whenever they felt like it for safety sake. Mick seemed genuinely concerned and she appreciated that, kind of liked the idea that someone was worried about her, even if it was in their job description. "If it were you, would you let the FBI put you up in a hotel and give you a personal body guard? I'm only assuming that I wouldn't exactly be able to take clients?" Mick wanted to say that Brie wouldn't have to worry about money, that she'd be taken care of, but that wasn't exactly so. Sure, she wouldn't have to worry about paying for the hotel or for food, but anything else was on her. If she had a car payment, rent, other bills - which Mick was sure she did - then that was on her.

"It's not as if I would just walk into your place, I'd just come by and knock, talk to you for a few minutes and leave," Mick replied. "This isn't something to take lightly. I realize you're use to taking care of yourself, and putting yourself in danger, but this man is killing people. Unsubs like this reach a breaking point when they're affection isn't returned, or they feel betrayed. Do you think the fact that you came here is going to go past him?"

She could imagine the man knew a great deal about her that she couldn't even fathom. He would definitely know that she'd gone to the police. Silently, she considered one of the photographs of the crime scenes the paper had run and how that could have been her--was supposed to represent her. Her face broke, crumpled for a moment and she covered the break with her hands, trying to breathe.

"I'll bring the letter in," she offered.

Given her own mother's history, it was difficult for Mick not to sympathize with Brie. For some reason, Mick felt a bit of an attachment towards the woman, and she couldn't quite put her finger on it. In her profession, that wasn't a good thing, and she knew it.

"That would be helpful, thank you," she said softly with a nod. She fished a card out of her wallet and handed it over after she'd scrawled her personal cell on the back of it. "This is my card, I want you to call me if you need anything. Or think of anything. Day or night, I mean it, all right?"

She took the card and held onto it tightly as she stared down at it. Flipping it over, she let her eyes linger over the woman's scrawl. "I like your 7's. You do them right." It was a weird thing to say, but it was the first thing to come to mind. If she'd met Mick in another situation, she would have tried to get her number. How funny it was that she'd gotten it anyway. She actually laughed and then felt embarrassed for the sound, which seemed really inappropriate for the moment. "Sorry," she said sheepishly. "I'm all over the place with demeanor right now...what does that say about me, oh wise behavior specialist?"

Mick smiled warmly, finding Brie's sheepish smile endearing. This woman was not your typical woman, Mick could tell. And it wasn't just because she was a prostitute. In fact, that was a small fact about Brie that was easy for Mick to push out of her mind.

"That says you're nervous, which is completely understandable," Mick replied. "It'll be all right. We're going to do everything we can to catch this guy and to keep you safe, all right?" she added as she reached out to gently touch the side of Brie's arm.

She really wanted to believe Mick. Never in her life had she been able to just put her problems on someone else and trust them to protect her. Even though the agent had said 'we'll' catch the guy, Brie imagined that it was only Mick that would be looking. It was kind of a silly notion, the whole white knight thing.

But the touch felt a bit thrilling and she didn't feel like recoiling at all. Normally she was quite sparing with her casual touch, but she welcomed the comfort from her. "Well then I'll check in with you and call you if I need something."

Mick drew her hand back and handed a pen and a pad of paper over to Brie. She wanted the woman's address and number so that she could keep in touch with her.

"Can you write down your number and address down for me? I just wanna keep in touch, make sure that you're safe."

She found herself missing the feel of Mick's hand there. For a moment, she just looked at the other. When the look drew out just a bit too long, she glanced down at the paper and wrote her cell on it as well as her landline. Then she scrawled her address in DC and it was located in a rather expensive end of town. She was high priced, though that lifestyle costed more and so her school loans weren't getting paid down and her mother's debt was keeping her in the life. She wasn't about to abandon the woman financially.

After, she stood up and reached for Mick's hand to shake it, but she ended up just kind of holding it. "You're really not what I expected. I can't get over it."

Mick had a feeling that she needed to be really careful with this one. She could easily sense that there was something there beyond just attraction, and that was a little bit unnerving. At the same time, it was nice to know she could feel something beyond just attraction for someone. It'd been such a long time since she had.

"What were you expecting, then?" she asked with a half smile as she kept a hold of Brie's hand.

"Someone with a stick up their ass, I guess," she said honestly. "Not someone i'd pursue at a bar." She didn't think it was a bad idea to be honest, though she wasn't really planning on going after Mick, even if she wanted to do so. "Anyway, thank you. I'm sure we'll see each other again."

The words made Mick smile, and she felt an odd flutter in her stomach that she hadn't felt since she was a teenager and had her first real girlfriend. She gently let go of Brie's hand, but only after giving it a squeeze.

"You're welcome," she said softly with a nod. "And yes, I'm sure we wil see eachother again."

Lingering for only a moment, she headed out of the office, thankful that at least her makeup hadn't run from the little bit of crying she'd done.
