adam, reagan
As much as Reagan wanted to fall apart, he wasn't allowing himself to. Eventually, he'd managed to fall asleep, and when he wokeup the basement was completely quiet. Everyone seemed to have fallen asleep judging by the steady breathing he heard from each little cell. He got up and went over to the suitcase that Adam had packed, and he sat down on the ground to sift through his belongings. Halfway through, he found a shirt that was Liam's. It was a dress shirt, white, simple. Reagan had ones just like this, but he knew the difference between his and Liam's shirts, and he felt tears sting his eyes as he brought it up to his face to inhale the familiar scent. He wanted to curl up with the piece of clothing and just break down, but he had to keep his head clear, so he swallowed down the urge and folded up the shirt carefully to tuck it back inside the suitcase. There was a dresser, but the idea of putting things away made him feel sick to his stomach.

After a moment, he pulled out a simple thin white t-shirt and a pair of black slacks, along with some argyle socks and a pair of boxer briefs. He got up and slipped into the teeny bathroom to take a long shower, and it was then that he finally cried, though he did so quietly. After he'd brushed his teeth, he came back out into his cell and went to sit down on the bed, his hair still damp and curling at the ends a bit. He twirled his wedding ring back and forth around his finger before he took it off and slipped it into his pocket. He didn't want to risk Adam seeing it and taking it away.

Reagan managed to tug on his clothes, though his hands were trembling and his entire body felt heavy. At Adam's words, he got to his feet and tried to make his way to the door. He was still running on adrenaline, so the pain and discomfort hadn't hit him just yet. He swayed on his feet and had to use the wall for support. His legs felt so tired.

"Which way?" he asked very quietly.

"Follow me," he said and brushed past Reagan, careful not to knock him over. It wasn't very far to the door to the basement. It looked like a door to a pantry in the kitchen. The basement itself extended well past the original basement, but the door location was in its original place.

He opened the door and gestured for Reagan to go. He followed him down and secured him in his cell. "He'll never find you, Reagan. He's probably relieved to be able to focus on his work now. I watched you both for a long time. He always loved work more than you." And with that, he left him down there.

Reagan was slow to get down the stairs, but he managed. He forced himself to take each step carefully, the last thing he wanted was for Adam to change his mind and help. He went into the little cell quietly and he didn't even turn to look back at Adam as he spoke. His words, Reagan knew, were untrue. It was quickly becoming obvious to him that Adam only saw things that he wanted to see, and that he twisted things to fit the scenario he wanted.

When he heard the door to the basement shut, he went to get some fresh clothes out of his suitcase, then he pulled his wedding band back out of his pocket. He was relieved to see that it hadn't fallen out of his pants when Adam had taken them off, and he slipped the band back on. He disappeared into his tiny bathroom then, wanting to get the smell of Adam off of him.

When he came back out, he was clean again, and dressed in different clothes. He saw a hamper in the corner of his cell, so he dumped his dirty clothes in there and that's when he saw the little mini fridge. He hadn't even noticed it before. He openedit up and saw things to make sandwiches with, and little snacks. Water. Grabbing the bread from the fridge, and a few other things he started to make a sandwich quietly.

He glanced up over at Parker and noticed that the other man was awake, and writing something in a notebook.

"I'm sorry I upset you yesterday," he finally said quietly. "I didn't mean to."

Parker had been here long enough to know exactly what had gone on up there. Sometimes, he thought he should warn the new ones about how liberal Adam was with the drugs in the beginning. But there was nothing they'd be able to prevent the slip of the needle under their skin. When Reagan started talking to him, his pen stopped moving. "I can't fathom a reason why you would mean to hurt me," he said logically.

He'd been thinking a lot about Callaway. The idea that he still loved him was romantic, but Parker had long since cut out his sense of romance or happy endings. "It's sad that Callaway hasn't moved on," he said quietly. "I wish he would. No offense, but your FBI guy is still just a guy." Parker was beginning to think Adam was something more than human, something evil.

Reagan was quiet as he finished making his sandwich. There were paper plates on top of the little fridge, and he grabbed one after he'd put everything away. He got up and took the plate and a bottle of water over to his bed to sit down.

"It's not just Liam. He has a whole team that works with him. They found a boy who was missing for seven years, they found a woman who was missing for five. They find serial killers and rapists and put them behind bars," Reagan said quietly. "Did you try and run? What's out there?"

That sounded a little more promising and that scared him. "I don't know if I want to be found," he said with a frown. It made him sick to admit it, but the uncertainty was true. Everything about this place was controlled. Parker had no decisions in this place, and nothing was his fault.

At the question about running, Parker rolled his eyes. "It's always the same, isn't it?" But he couldn't blame him. "There are trees everywhere. We're in a big farmhouse in a small clearing. I ran through the trees and there was a pasture, with a couple horses. I actually thought maybe I could ride one of them out but I don't know shit about horses and they weren't the nicest things so I just kept running. But the forest got worse and I got tired and he found me."

"That's understandable," Reagan offered honestly.

Parker would have to rebuild his entire life, and that was probably a very scary prospect. Reagan could understand why he and the others might not want to go back to their lives, at least to some degree, but deep down he really felt that everyone wanted their old life back. Of course, they could never really have it as it was, which would make things hard. He'd only been missing for two days, maybe even less, so it was easy for him to want to go back home.

"I'm not saying that I'll run," Reagan said, though it was definitely on his mind. But running out there blind, without a clue as to what he'd be up against wasn't smart, not when he had Parker and the others as resources. "Horses?" He ridden them before, quite a few times, especially when he went back home to visit his mother in Austin. But bareback was difficult, he'd only done it twice, and he wasn't the best at it. "What are you writing about?"

"Horses," he repeated and actually laughed because it had been the last thing he'd expected. "I asked him about them and he said they were his dad's. They might be dead by now. How long do horses even live?" He shrugged and closed his notebook. "I'm writing a story about lost gods. Kind of a children's book, just a little nothing story." He wrote notes about his experiences here, but he also wrote fantasy since it helped him escape.

"If taken care of, they can live for a long time," Reagan said, but there was no way of knowing if Adam had kept up with the horses or not. Reagan wasn't going to get his hopes up about it. He took a bite of his sandwich and listened to what Parker was writing about. "I was never good at writing," he smiled faintly. "I tried to write in high school, but intricate plots and character development - I was awful at it."

Parker was feeling a little less defensive, especially since he knew what Reagan had probably been through. "I tried to illustrate one of my children's books, but it was horrible. I didn't want anyone else drawing for my writing so I just ended up working on a novel instead." He loved writing children's stories though and always thought eventually he'd get one published. "You aren't planning on doing any painting in here, are you." He'd heard them talking before Adam had taken him. "It's funny, but I never thought about denying him my writing."

Reagan was a very strong individual, even if he didn't quite realize it. He'd just been raped, but he was eating a sandwich and making conversation with Parker as if it had never happened. A part of him was in denial, though, and his ordeal was something he'd have to deal with eventually. For now, he was keeping his resolve, though.

He shifted and winced a little bit before he twisted off the cap to the bottle of water and took a sip. His throat hurt, and it was bruising nicely now.

"I don't," Reagan replied honestly. "It's probably stupid, but what he's doing is wrong. We're not pets to keep and do tricks for him whenever he wants."

"No, but it might feel good to expunge some of the shit. Throwing paint at some of the canvases he gives you might not be the worst thing you're ever done. It doesn't have to be for him. Better than keeping it all in. Plus, it can be fun to fuck with him." He could be terribly hollow, having gotten so used to the horror of it all.

"Most of the time, he doesn't leave marks." In the dim light of the basement, he could still see te bruises forming on Reagan's throat. He felt like apologizing for Adam.

"Something tells me that no matter what, he'll think it's for him or find some way to make it so," Reagan said quietly. He wet his lips and took another sip of water before he lifted a hand to gently touch the front of his throat. "It's fine, it'll go away." Now if only what Adam had done to him could go away, too.

He lowered his gaze back down to his plate and was quiet for a few moments. It was a process, trying to pack everything bad away in one little area of his brain. He wondered how Liam managed such a thing, but he was going to do his best to try and master it.

"I suppose I could paint him portraits of Liam, I'm sure he'd love that," Reagan said after a moment.

Parker barked a surprised laugh. It was almost as if his voice had forgotten how to laugh genuinely and the sound was scratchy and awkward. The very image of Adam being faced with portraits of Liam instead of the art he was expecting. He laughed for a good long while before he stopped and realized he was crying too. But he did his best to hide that part. "I think you might test Adam's no kill method. He says he wants us all to live long healthy lives, but you do that and he might make an exception."

As Reagan heard Parker start to laugh, he couldn't help but laugh at what he'd said, too. Imagining Adam's face if he recieved portrait after portrait of Liam was priceless, but Reagan knew that there'd be a price to pay for it. A part of him felt it'd be worth it, though. As the laughing died down, he lifted a hand to wipe at his eyes and he shook his head as he caught his breath.

"God, I'm stubborn," he sighed. He took another sip of water and stared down at his bed. "It's always gotten me into trouble, and I guess here will be no different."

"Try not to lose that. It's what I miss the most about myself." It was the first bit of advice he'd given to a fellow captive that didn't feel like he was selling his soul to do it. It was the truth rather than just a way to get by. He bunched his legs up and glanced over at the others before looking back at Reagan. "You've already changed things, you know. You've given them more hope than they've seen in awhile."

"And what about you?" Reagan asked softly as he furrowed his brow. "You've been here the longest, I can't imagine what it must be like. I can understand why it might be scary to hope after so long, or to want to go back. Things are different now, but you have someone out there waiting for you. That's something, isn't it?"

"No, it just means that Adam has done double the damage. He's ruined Callaway's life, forced him to wait for someone who doesn't even exist anymore." Parker really believed that and there was no hope in him that things would be the same. But at the same time, Reagan had sparked something in him that said it might be okay even if it wasn't the same. "Callaway is really amzing. I never did deserve him. But I'm glad I had him. Have him."

"Nobody forced Callaway to wait for you," Reagan said as he put the cap back on his bottle of water. "He chose to wait for you." Reagan thought it was sad, but terribly sweet and romantic. It was loyalty beyond what most human beings were capable of, especially in this day and age. "And you're right, you do still have him. You do still have something out there that's yours."

"I'm not glad you're here, but I'm kind of glad you're here." He didn't know if his words would come across right, but he said them anyway. "It seems like he's choosing stronger ones now. Maybe that'll catch up with him." Didn't the bad guy always slip up sometimes? Maybe the authorities would finally catch the mistakes now.

Reagan understood what Parker meant, and honestly, if him being taken helped point Liam's team in the right direction it was almost worth what he was enduring. All of these men could go home, Parker could go back to Callaway, Elijah and Shay could be together, and Murphy could go back to his family or whoever else was waiting for him out there.

"I wish I could better explain the things that Liam and his team do," Reagan said as he rubbed at his arm idly. It was sore from where Adam had grabbed it, and from where he'd injected the sedative into him. "He works hard, and he's very good at it. They all are. Adam's right, Liam does love his job, but I love that about him. And I don't think he loves it more than he loves me, but that doesn't matter. I love him for who he is, and his job is a huge part of who he is. When I married him, I knew how demanding his work could be, but I promised myself that I would always be supportive of it. How could I not be supportive of something that helps people find loved ones, or have closure, or put people who hurt others behind bars where they belong?"

"You're a lot more understanding than i'd probably be." Parker ued to get jealous of Callaway's writing time when it grew to be what he deemed excessive. But he understood the creative process, he just didn't like sharing. It sounded like Reagan nobly shared Liam with a wide array of people, all in need.

"I have a little ice gel pack in my freezer. He gave it to me when I asked for it for my headaches. You could use it on your arm." He went to grab it and started rolling it up so it would slip through the holes in the chainlink.

"It's not always easy," Reagan admitted. "Sometimes I miss him terribly, but it always makes it so that when I see him it's even better, you know?"

When Parker got up to retrieve the icepack, Reagan put his plate and water aside so that he could scoot to the edge of the bed. He bit back a wince and reached out to grab a hold of the little icepack as Parker pushed it through the fence, and once he had a hol dof it he unrolled it to press it against his arm.

"Thanks," he said as he looked down at the bruise. He could hear Shay and Elijah whispering, and he smiled faintly. "Those two are pretty close, aren't they?"

"Yeah," he nodded. "It kind of freaks me out that people could get close in a place like this. I mean, if we ever get out of here are they really going to want to be reminded of it all the time?" It made him shudder to think. But he also felt close to the people here, so maybe he'd miss them if they weren't in his life. Great, now he was thinking about being free again like it was a possibility. He sighed and opened his notebook back up again.

"I don't know, I think it proves that no matter what, love is possible," Reagan said softly with a shrug of his shoulders as he looked down at the icepack pressed against his arm. "Maybe I'm a bit of a romantic," he added with a sad sort of laugh. He lifted the icepack up to the front of is neck and stared down at his wedding band. He couldn't help but wonder if Liam was doing the same thing at that exact same moment, and the thought made him smile in faint amusement.
