Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Ron and Hermione: the great hall

"Neither do I," Hermione said, glancing around the Great Hall once more just to be certain. She saw neither a full head of dark hair nor the famous Weasley red either. Therefore, she assumed they were still doing whatever it was they had planned to do before the ball.

Gesturing towards one of the tables, she glanced up at Ron, finding it always awkward to not fully see his face though able to make out his eyes underneath his mask. "We should probably get a table to reserve for all of us," she suggested, shrugging her shoulders.

"Right, yeah. 'S'good idea." Ron said, agreeing and looking over the various tables set up in the Great Hall. Some were scattered with students and some empty and when Ron spotted one that was both near the stage and the dancefloor, he thought it was perfect. "How 'bout that one, yeah? Good spot." Lifting his hand he pointed at the table he was looking at and then looked at Hermione.

She was wearing her mask of course and he couldn't see most of her face but the fact that he could only see her eyes made them all the more bright and sparkling. She had very pretty eyes, he'd discovered that ages ago and now he knew, all night, he'd be trying not to stare into them.

Hermione followed his outstretched hand when he pointed to a table and nodded. Personally, she would have preferred to have been a bit farther away from the stage, but was willing to compromise. "We should get it before someone else does," she said, started to weave her way through the crowd to the table he had chosen. Sitting down, she looked at the decorations on the table and then around the Great Hall again. "I wouldn't have admitted this earlier, but I'm actually relieved that Professor Burbage took control of the decorations instead of leaving it for the prefects."

Ron sat down next to her, running a hand through his hair as he did so and scanning the room once more for his friends. He tried to keep his eyes moving around the room because if he didn't he'd find himself staring at Hermione all night. Really, she looked very pretty and it was difficult concentrating on anything else.

"Well, that way you get to enjoy the evening instead of worrying about the decorations staying in place and all that." He told her, smiling slightly at her and reaching up to scratch his cheek under the mask. He couldn't wait to take it off later on.

"I suppose," Hermione mused, relaxing back in her chair and actually feeling content. Though she was worried that something might happen at the ball, she wasn't going to worry about it. The Professors were keeping watch and everyone had been so excited about the ball in the first place that she sincerely doubted anything major would result from someone's lack of sense. Besides, she didn't doubt for a second that Ernie would worry more than enough for the best of it. Therefore, she intended to enjoy herself for once - a shock she was sure that would surprise most everyone outside her acquaintance.

Ron looked over at Hermione and even with the mask she was instantly recognizable. Well, at least to him. He could pick her out anywhere and in a millisecond.

"Did I mention that you look pretty?" He mumbled softly, not meeting her eye but completely meaning it with the sincerity in his voice.

Ginny gave Harry's hand a squeeze as they snaked through the crowds. "There's Mione and Ron," she said happily, tugging him in their direction. She and Harry had been battling through herds of people they wanted to avoid, finding friends--best friends--so quickly was a relief. She touched the diamond on the necklace Harry had given her, just to make sure it was still there, and then raised her hand up and waved eagerly. "Oi!" she called out to them as she and Harry approached. "Ron, Hermione!"

Harry felt like crying, he was so grateful to have this oasis of friends right away. He had nearly stumbled over the mountain of CrabbeandGoyle, that interchangable bloody lump of worthless, and now felt quite soiled. He practically propelled over to his friends, clutching hard to Ginny's hand.

"Cheers!" Harry said merrily as they got to the table. "Hey mate, nice robes," he told Ron, giving him a high-five. "Hermione, you look so lovely," he said, giving her a hug.

She didn't even have the opportunity to take a moment to blush and properly thank Ron for his compliment before Ginny called to the two of them and Harry enveloped her into a hug.

"Thank you, Harry," she said, a smile spreading gently across her lips as she pulled back and glanced at Ginny, giving her a smile. "Despite our previous reservations about Fleur, she knows how to pick out a dress for you, I think. I certainly hope Harry took notice." Hermione looked back at Harry, giving him a pointed look. Even with his mask on, she could easily recognise him. "Where are your glasses?" she asked when she realised they weren't hidden under the mask and frowned slightly.

Ron, who was thankful for the interuption as he had been extremely embarrassed by his little confession, grinned at his sister and his best mate.

"Probably chucked them for the night, eh, mate?" Ron said, clapping Harry happily on the back. The four of them, that was how it should always be. These were the people that meant most to him in the world and they were his family.

Harry laughed, sitting down in a chair with his friends, beaming at them. You three are my world. "I did notice, don't worry," Harry said simply.

He laughed again, reaching up and touching near his eyes. "I figured that the mask and the glasses would be a real bother, so I got contact lenses? Kingsley is so good with Muggles, he took care of getting them for me, but I feel so bad for putting him out - I hate them," he said flatly. "I just want to rub my eyes, but I can't, they'll bloody go flying."

"Score one for Fleur," Ginny remarked to Hermione, sitting down on Harry's lap and shooting Ron a look that clearly said, Do not overreact or I will have to hex you into 1998, you sodding git, this is my night! "That makes it...one for Phlegm."

She giggled, rubbing Harry's chin. "I think he looks rather dashing without his glasses, like he's Gilderoy Lockhart's more sexy, charming dark haired assistant." Ginny paused for a moment, pining for Gilderoy. What ever happened to him... Giving herself a shake, she asked in an overly bright tone, "So! How has your night been, exciting?" She glanced between the two, expectantly, as she fiddled with first the bracelet her mother lent her, then her new necklace, as she waited for one of them to make a sign that they had finally gotten together...

Hermione was trying to get a clear look at Harry and his contact lenses, but his mask was distracting and getting in the way. "I'm surprised he was able to procure them; usually you have to have a prescription from an optometrist beforehand. Either way, when we're not all wearing these ridiculous masks, I'd like to properly see," she said and then looked over at Ginny as she racked up a point for her.

Joining in on the laugh, Hermione shook her head. "It might very well be the only point she'll get this year." She, too, took a moment to think about Gilderoy Lockhart, only to quickly dismiss such childish thoughts; he had been a fraud and had very nearly gotten Ron and Harry killed.

When asked about their night, Hermione glanced over at Ron and shrugged her shoulders. "Pretty good, wouldn't you say, Ron?" she asked him. "We went for a walk before coming here not too long ago."

Ron turned slightly pink at the mention of their walk before the ball, immediately thinking of the few moments when they had held hands and hadn't let go until arriving at the Great Hall.

"Yeah, yeah, good. For sure." He said, slightly mumbled as he fiddled with the material of his robes. "You guys go for a walk before too? And please, spare me the details." He said with a grin.

Ginny noted the pink cheeks and raised an eyebrow. Surely Hermione could have communicated more, though, had something happened. Damn it, it was confirmed:

Ron was a cowardly prat. She was going to have some serious arse kicking later.

Ginny rolled her eyes, her mouth screwing up in a cheeky way. "Oh, yes, Ron, we went on a walk, if by walk you mean sha--" She squealed as Harry pinched her, and she turned back to glare at him. Sighing heavily, Ginny corrected, "We went up to the Astronomy Tower, just to enjoy the view," she said, a rueful smile tugging at her lips as she thought of Dumbledore's tomb. But it melted into something bright when she added, "And Harry gave me this," she said, touching the stone around her neck. "And then we came down here and nearly got crushed by Crabbe and/or Goyle. Lovely, graceful chaps," she said dryly.

Harry frowned in confusion as he looked from Ron to Hermione. It's so romantic around here, a walk in the garden? Not a single snog? Oi mates. I really think locking you both in a closet is the best way to resolve this.

He pinched Ginny just in time to stop her from her snide comment, and gave Hermione a pained expression at the usual sniping that Ginny just couldn't resist throwing at her brother. He blushed a bit as she pointed out the gift. "Yeah well, prezzies are nice. A lot nicer than getting squashed to death," he sdded with a wince.

Harry glanced around the dance floor. "So! Who's planning on not dancing with me!" Though I will show off my new moves. But not. Yet.

Though their bantering could border on being somewhat cruel, Hermione was very fond of the way Ginny and Ron seemed to go back and forth with one another. When Harry looked at her, she shook her head, smiling despite things. Over the years, she had grown used to it and was becoming quite skilled at ignoring it.

When Ginny nearly went to far, she hid her laugh behind her hand, her shoulders shaking with laughter as Ginny jumped when Harry pinched her. Clearing her throat, she tried to compose herself.

"Oh, Harry, it's really nice," she exclaimed when Ginny gave her the perfect opportunity to distract herself from her laughter. "It looks pretty on you, Ginny." And really, it did. It flattered her perfectly.

Hermione resisted the urge to glance at Ron when Harry mentioned dancing. She assumed that they would have a few turns around the dance floor, but she wanted him to ask her, not the other way around. She wasn't going to make the first move, even if he had asked her to the ball finally. "I think that would be everyone if you threaten to step on our toes."

Ron laughed at Harrys exclamation and he stood, clapping Harry on the shoulder. "Think I'll pass ont he dancing with you, mate." He said, grinning widely and thinking he may want to ask Hermione soon because it was a dance and he had promised her he'd dance with her.

"Er, 'Mione?" He said, turning and looking at her from his spot. "Want to dance?" He asked softly, bit of a blush to his cheeks as he held out his hand, feeling it shake a bit.

Hermione watched the interaction between Harry and Ron, giving a small smile between the two before glancing back at Ginny. She wanted to share what had happened on her and Ron's walk so badly, but now was hardly the most appropriate time. And it was hard to convey a look that said the two of them needed to talk soon with a mask on her face.

When Ron addressed her, she glanced up at him, only to blush a second later when he asked her to dance. She was touched by his outstretched hand and the fact that it was shaking; he was as nervous as she was. "I'd like that," she finally answered, realising she might have waited a few beats too many. Taking his hand, she stood and looked back at Ginny, not allowing herself to show more than a smile though she wanted desperately to bounce on her toes or exclaim, finally!

Ron led Hermione through the crowds of people to the middle of the dancefloor, holding onto Hermione's hand tightly the entire time. He hoped it wasn't sweaty, it wasn't exactly the impression he wanted to make.

When they reached an open spot on the dancefloor, he breathed a sigh of relief when it was a slow song that was playing. He knew this kind of dancing better than the fast stuff. Stepping forward, he placed a hand on her waist shakingly, and held out his other hand for her to hold.

With him leading the way, Hermione was able to glance quickly back at Ginny, biting her lip nervously. She saw the thumbs up, blushed, and gave a small laugh that she was grateful Ron wouldn't be able to hear over the music.

When he stopped and stepped closer to her, she let her intuition take over. It wasn't the first time she had danced with someone, but it was definitely the first time she had ever danced with Ron and, admittedly, she was nervous. His hand on her waist caused the butterflies in her stomach to make themselves known even more and she did her best to hold her composure as stoic as possible as he took her hand. Then, she let him take over, letting him lead as they danced together for the first time ever.

Ron nearly slipped and fell when Hermione put her hand in his and it took him a second to regain his footing and take a deep breath. Now was the time to impress her with his dance skills, not step on her or make her fall down.

Quickly he fell into step with the music and he was instantly dancing with her as he was taught. He hadn't been lying when he said he was good. He was. He guided her around the floor, biting his bottom lips as he was concentrating on not messing up the steps.

That first mishap had her worried. She worried that for the entire three minutes and some odd seconds, he was going to tread all over her feet and she would feel the bruises in the morning. But once he gathered his confidence (he always seemed to lack it, even when he excelled at something) and took control, even she had to admit that he surprised her by how well of a dancer he was than she had previously thought.

"Who was it that finally taught you how to dance?" she asked after a moment, deciding that since he was finally comfortable and confident, she could strike up a conversation.

Ron was momentarily startled, not expecting her to strike up a conversation as they were dancing, but he concentrated on the steps and had fallen into them easily and was able to maintain a talk with her quite well.

"Mum made us all learn. Gave us lessons and all that a while back. Said that everyone should know how. Didn't think it'd come in handy until now, actually." He responded with a slight shrug as he looked down at her, a half smile on his face.

Ginny, though, was unseen by Ron, and she gave Hermione a brilliant smile, holding up two thumbs in encouragement. The moment that Ron and Hermione disappeared into the crowd, she whipped her head around to look at Harry. "I don't know whether to be excited for that? Or so bloody annoyed that Ron's too banjaxed to tell her and show her that he fancies her!" she blustered.
