Link didn't come from a long line of magic. He was one of the few kids who had cropped up seemingly out of no where. The Ministry kept a look out for youngsters just like him, and there was a fun set up to help put such kids through school if they couldn't afford it. Everything had started to change when he was just thirteen. He started to notice things that he could do that he couldn't explain. It was always without intending to do them, too, which usually made for awkward situations. When he was fourteen and just about to go to high school, he was plucked up by a wizard and for the past year he'd been at Gorsemoor Academy. He'd hated returning home for the summer, and if he could have helped it he would have stayed at school. Both of his parents were alcoholics and they dabbled in illegal drugs quite often. The little trailer park Link had come from was a hell to the boy for many reasons, and this place? It was everything he'd ever wished for. Whenever the holidays came around, he was the one who always stayed, so it was no surprise that he'd stayed for spring break. It had been quiet, and he'd read a lot as well as wrote. He liked being on his own more than anything, and when the school started to fill up again he had to sigh in disappointment.

At the moment he was sitting outside beneath a tree, enjoying the weather while he listened to music and read over a book on herbology. He didn't see Apollo in the distance. He hadn't realized that Apollo and Ares had returned from break yet. The Avel twins were ruthless and he always tried to avoid them.

"Who cares if that's the only thing he's worth? Mudbloods shouldn't be worth anything," Ares muttered, a quiet laugh escaping him as he shrugged. "I heard he's all ready got a date to the dance anyhow, and he's too nice to ditch his date to go with you - especially since you and I torture him all of the time," he added as he stretched his arms over his head and let out a heavy sigh.

Now Apollo was pissed and he wasn't good at hiding his anger. But he was very good at redirecting it to make it look like he was mad about something else.

"Oh, whatever, Ares. I'm sitting here, trying to plan the prank of the century to put that little fucker in his place and you're sitting there thinking small. You're just like Dad." It was the worst possible insult and it came out of the blue. He got to his feet and stormed off in the direction of the journal, scooping it up without missing a beat and slipping it into his bag with slick hands.

That stung, and Ares laid there for a moment before he got to his feet and followed after Apollo angrily. He reached out to shove him hard from behind.

"You're a piece of shit, I can't believe you'd ever say something like that to me," he muttered. "You say things without thinking just like he does, too, you know."

The push made him stumble forward a little and he wheeled instantly, just aching to get some of his aggression out.

"So what? At least I take some initiative!" Ares did too, but Apollo was completely disregarding that fact to hold up his argument. He lurched forward and knocked the heels of his palms into his twin's chest. "I was just trying to make Spring Fling fun rather than the same old shit every year. But no, you have to point out that the mudblood is taking someone else. So yeah, I guess we should just cut up his face or something. Real original."

For a moment, Ares was fuming. He was so blinded from his own anger and the fact that his brother had said something so hurtful that it took a moment for his thoughts to clear enough for him to realize what they were fighting over. Link. A no good, dirty mudblood was coming between them, and why?

"I'll do it," he said, testing his brother as he turned to head off in the direction Link had skittered off to. "It'll be doing you a favor since you obviously like the way he looks a little too much," he shot back over his shoulder.

what would humiliate Link the most do you think?

Like a child chasing after a parent who had threatened to leave him behind, Apollo felt his heart race, terrified. He grabbed on to Ares' shirt hem and stopped him. "You'll get expelled. If you hurt him that bad, they'll kick you out of school and we'll never get away from them." By them he meant their parents. Apollo dreamed about being successful, making cash, and running away somewhere with Ares to carry on the Avel name.

His words were genuine, even though he was also trying to get Ares to not disfigure Link. The thought was awful to Apollo. Not that part of him didn't want it to happen through some natural occurence. Then maybe he wouldn't have kissed him. But ultimately, Ares was who mattered and he couldn't stand the thought of him getting kicked out. "I'm sorry. You're not like Dad. You're not like him at all, okay?"

that's a tough one... probably if he thought that apollo really liked him only to be proven wrong in

front of everyone maybe? ]

The whole point of storming off was only to get Apollo to run after him and stop him, and once he felt the tug on his shirt and heard his brothers voice he relaxed. Turning to look at him, he offered a little bit of a frown before he looked away and down at the ground. Crossing his arms over his chest he gave a shrug and then lifted his gaze back up to look at his brother.

"I'm sorry too," he admitted quietly. Apollo was the only person that could get an apology out of Ares.

He pulled Ares into a hug before he shoved him away playfully. "We'll move to Boston and run the mafia," he grinned. That had been their dream when they were little. Apollo had pretended to be the godfather, ordering neighborhood kids around to do petty crimes like stealing fruit or knocking over mailboxes. Ares was his main enforcer. They always worked seamlessly together.

Beckoning, he led Ares inside so they could go to the dorms. The place was still pretty empty and Apollo found he missed the way people cowered when they passed. Together they were invincible.

Ares smiled faintly as he trailed along after his brother, wishing that the hug had lasted a little longer. He was sure that no one could ever be as good of a friend to him as Apollo was - they were brothers, twins. They'd been created together and that was something infinitely special.

"Maybe you could convince Link to go to the dance with you," he said after a moment. "If he thought you really liked him," he added with a soft snicker.

The fact that Ares was conceding to his plan spoke volumes. Apollo grinned and reached out to grab Ares' hand like he used to when they were kids. He'd dragged him everywhere, towing him into trouble. Not that Ares wasn't the instigator in many many capers as well.

"Do you think? Maybe I could. You should corner him and accuse him of putting a love potion in my oatmeal." That would make Link think that Apollo was acting infatuated with him. Of course there would be no love potion, so Link would assume the emotions were real.

"That's actually a good idea," Ares agreed. "Mind games are always more effective," he added. It was something that he'd learned at a young age, and he'd pocketed away the information for future use. "Maybe you should kiss him - be nice to him first, well - not nice nice but a little nice. Then I can confront him and accuse him of putting a love potion in one of your drinks," he offered.

There was the need to lie again. Apollo looked away from Ares and nodded. "Yeah, I'll do that tomorrow maybe and then you can confront him later that day. It would still give us plenty of time to convince him to go to the dance with me." He hated lying to Ares. Sure, he would lie to anyone else, but it gave him pause when it was his brother.

When they got to their room, he shoved open the door. It was exactly as they'd left it and he heaved a sigh. School was starting back up and it was back to the grind. But at least he had Ares and together they would punish Link for making Apollo feel that way about him--even if Ares didn't know exactly that's what they were doing.

All of their things were all ready in the room. They'd bullied some other kids to taking everything up for them, and Ares kicked off his shoes before he plopped down onto his bed.

"And if he says yes to the dance? What'll we do to him when you guys get there?" he asked, tipping his head to the side. "It has to be good. Something really humiliating. In front of everyone."

Apollo thought of the journal and of reading it out loud at the dance. But he wanted to read it all to himself first so he didn't mention it. Instead, he sat down on his bed and leaned back so that his upper half was down and his lower half was still hanging off the end of it as if he was sitting.

"Don't know. We'll think of something good though. Maybe get him drunk and just let him make a fool out of himself. Or light his clothes on fire." With the sort of fire that didn't burn skin, just fabric. That would be attention grabbing, but wouldn't get them expelled.

"That'd be hilarious - he'd end up nearly naked before a teacher could put the fire out," Ares said with a soft laugh as he closed his eyes and let out a little yawn. "I think that one should definitely go on the list," he added as he rolled over onto his side and got comfortable. "This means you have to be nice to him until the dance, though - think you can fake being nice and liking a mudblood?" he asked with a smirk.

"I doubt I'm going to have to be too nice to him. He's probably just dying for any kind of kindness from us. If I just don't punch him in the face, I think I'll be in good with him. Hell, maybe even if I punch him in the face." He remembered hitting him after kissing him and he wondered if he'd just said he was sorry and kissed him again if all wouldn't have been forgiven. For some reason that thought made him feel sad.

"He's too stupid for any kind of self preservation."

"Yeah, I guess you're right," Ares agreed as he slipped beneath the covers and tugged them up over his head with a loud yawn. "M'tired," he added sleepily.

He didn't realize that him taking a nap would give Apollo the perfect oppurtunity to read Link's journal. That the things in that journal might soften his brother up a little bit towards the other boy. Link had been through a lot of terrible abuse growing up, and the only person who knew that was Christian who was hundres of miles away. Well, Christian and his parents - the one who subjected him to the abuse.

As soon as he was certain that Ares was dozing, Apollo slipped under his own covers and took out his wand to illuminate his reading. He opened the book and started to skim through the entries. It excited him far too much to be reading about Link's personal thoughts.

He found himself slowing down. Instead of just skimming for something good, he started to read each word, learning as much as he could about the object of his obsession.
