To--Anyone at this point :D
Gorsemoor Academy had the auspicious designation of being not only a preparatory academy for magical youngsters, but also a place that offered undergraduate programs for further wizarding education. That's what the brochure had said anyway. What it really meant to Archemedes was that he would have plenty of work during the summer (nearly a full course load of college level classes) so that no moment of his life could be called empty. Vacation was a terrible thing to him for it left his mind to wander and it always wandered back to very negative times.

Unfortunately, the academy still gave out breaks. Things like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the current nightmare of Spring break. Archemedes paced back and forth in the small--but sufficient--living room of his professor's apartment, wishing that he had any papers left to grade. He even had all of his curriculum for the rest of the quarter planned out thanks to the winter holiday break. The cat that his mother sent him meowed plantively. "You're not any help, Pox, so you may as well shut up." Archemedes liked the cat, but had resented the fact that his mother sent her to calm his nerves, as if he was nothing more than some nervous little old cat lady now. Then again, maybe that was the case. Regardless, Pox now reminded him of that fact and so he always spoke to her gruffly. Fortunately, Pox didn't seem to mind.

When he couldn't handle the small confines of his apartment anymore, Archemedes stormed to the door and flung it open, startled to see someone already on the other side of it. His Auror sensibilities mocked him as soon as he heard his own girlish cry of surprise and maybe a little terror.

Archemedes was prone to mood swings, bad thoughts that encroached on his brain and turned his emotions into a dismal tide. But when he focused on being bright and cheerful, he often managed. Right now he was doing that because it felt more appropriate to be congenial with a student and Jordy's calm, inquisitive nature was infectious.

"Entirely charming. I think he once called Professor Marshall a lily livered hornswaggler. I don't even know what that means. Consider this a test of your mental resistance. If you ever face a jarvey, you'll be fully prepared for all of his shinanigans."

"I have no idea what that means either," Jordy said with a warm laugh as he peered in at the creature. "It's funny - if he was smaller he'd be cute, but he just looks creepy at this size," he told Archemedes before he glanced over at him. "I actually have seen one before now that I remember. My Mom wanted her garden degnomed - it was kind of disturbing the way they do it," he added as he looked back at the animal.

"Douchebags!" The creature cried indignantly from his plush cage. All of the animals were well cared for here. They were all valuable specimens for educational purposes.

"This is the reason I'm glad Pox can't talk. I have the feeling she'd have some choice words for me." Archemedes stared down the jarvey and after a moment, the animal quieted. Maybe he still had some intimidation factor left. The thought puffed him up. "My mother never de-gnomed her garden. I think she was trying to start a little army."

Jordy kept his attention focused on Archemedes face while he stared the jarvey down, and he stared a bit afterwards in awe. He wanted to be able to do things like that with just a simple look. Wetting his lips, he forced himself to look away and he watched the animal as it stared back at them.

"I'm sure my cat would have some interesting things to say too, especially when I don't have time to feed him his favorite food," Jordy said with a faint smile.

"It's noble that you want to protect people," he mentioned as he drew his attention away from the creature. As soon as Archemedes wasn't glaring at him, he started to mutter a few expletives. Kneeling down, Archemedes reached into his pocket to pull out some cat kibble. He tossed a few bits into the cage and the jarvey came closer to them to sniff at the food. "Why didn't your father become an auror? Was he simply better at writing spellbooks?"

"I think a part of him was afraid that he'd disappoint everyone somehow, that he would fail at it - I'm not sure," Jordy said honestly as he looked down to watch as Archemedes drew the jarvey closer with treats. "He never really told me. My Grandfather says that some people just have it in them, and others just don't. You either do, or you don't."

"Do you think people can lose it? Can they have it and then suddenly not have it anymore?" It was too easy to ask that question; it slipped out before he could think better of it. Instead of looking over at Jordy, he kept his attention focused on the animal. It hopped closer and closer until it was right up against the chicken wire. Even if Archemedes could intimidate the thing, he could also treat it kindly.

The question seemed to perplex Jordy, and he was silent for a moment as he looked down at the jarvey. He chewed on his lower lip in thought as he tipped his head to the side and let out a quiet breath.

"Honestly, I'm not sure," he finally said. "I think that - if you have it, you have it. And that if you think it's lost, it probably it isn't - maybe you just need a break from it and it'll be there when you're really ready to get back to it."

The answer soothed Archemedes and he hadn't expected it to do so. It made his whole body go still as he reflected on what Jordy had said. Unfortunately, during that time his fingers were still poking through the chicken wire and as soon as Archemedes stopped paying attention, the big ferret-like animal struck. He took one of the man's fingers in his mouth and bit down hard.

Coming to life with the pain, Archemedes yanked his hand back, but that only made the wound worse because it forced the teeth to tear through his finger. A nasty rake of torn flesh came out of the jarvey's mouth and the man clutched the his hand to his chest as he bled. "Sonofa-"

Jordy hadn't been expecting that, and his eyes went a bit wide with surprise. Immediately he reached out to gently take Archemedis hand in both of his to examine the wound.

"You all right?" he asked before he looked up at the older man. "I mean - I know you are, of course you are. But I can do a healing spell if you'd like? It'd be great practice," he offered - in battle he'd have to aid other Auros and heal them when needed, as they would do the same for him. "What spell would be best for this?" he asked, as if Archemedes had meant for this to happen. "I was thinking Episkey, but this looks a little more deep than a moderate wound so maybe Vulnera Sanentur?"

At the sight of his own blood, Archemedes skin blanched to an even paler shade than it already was. He looked like he was going to be sick or faint. Before his experiences in Europe, he did not have a problem with blood, but now was a very different time in his life.

Seeing Jordy so eager to learn from this gave Archemedes some strength though and he focused on that rather than his pounding heart and his spinning head. "Um--" he tried to force some words but all he could do was stammer. Maybe spending time with students outside of the classroom was a bad idea if he was going to show them all of his problems. He must seem so weak to this boy. "Um--I--Vul--Vulnera--yes that one. Good eye."

Jordy was sure that someone as experiened as Archemedes could heal himself just fine since he had one hand that was completely uninjured, but as the man went pale and started to stammer he frowned. He'd heard whispers here and there of the things that may or may not have happened to the man overseas, and now he was beginning to wonder if some of the worst of them were true.

"All right," he said with a quick nod as he took his wand out of his back pocket and took a step back so that he could focus. It only took a matter of seconds before his attention was completely on par, and he gave a quick flick of his wand as he spoke, "Vulnera Sanentur!"

The power and efficiency of the spell surprised Archemedes enough to clear his thoughts and focus them back on reality rather than bad memories. There was a flash of heat and a brief sting, a perfectly executed spell.

Having caught his breath, Archemedes relaxed once more. "Very well done." Yes, it would be better to simply play this off as a learning exercise. "I've had mediwizards do it less efficiently than that."

There was no room for nerves, not until afterwards, and when Jordy was done he felt a flood of adenaline. He'd actually done it perfectly, and he smiled and looked a bit stunned as he stared at the healing work he'd done.

"Thank you," he said as he tucked his wand away and looked up at Archemedes. "I pay a lot of attention to healing spells, I think it's something that most Aurors kind of just gloss over and really it can be the most important in some situations. Mediwizards aren't always going to be around."

He stared down at his hands, turning the previously injured one back and forth. It was perfectly mended. For a brief moment, Archemedes had sworn that he'd caught a glimpse of white bone, always so stark against the red of blood.

When he'd finally caught his breath, Archemedes reached out and took Jordy's hand without it being offered. He helped himself up and brushed his clothing off. He had normal muggle clothes on but with a dramatic cloak thrown over the top. That was how he dressed most of the time. Even though Archemedes came from a very old wizarding family, they had all willingly embraced the modern world and the mixing of muggle customs into their lives. They had been far from elitists. "Thank you," he said again, keeping ahold of Jordy's hand to further steady himself.

Jordy was quite fond of the way Archemedes dressed, it seemed to suit the man. Archemedes seemed to have an odd and unique look about him, and Jordy was often drawn in by the planes of his face, though he'd been careful as to not stare for too terribly long.

When Archemedes took a hold of his hand, Jordy was surprised, but he helped the man up and offered a shy smile along with a bit of a nod.

"You're welcome, I'm glad I could help," he said. "I'm glad I did the spell right, too," he laughed with a grin.

"The wrong spell could have really put me in a pickle," he quipped. Finally, he let go of Jordy's hand. "Or put my finger in a pickle jar."

The jarvey trotted off, satisfied that it had gotten its revenge on Archemedes for the glare. It had been mostly embarassment rather than real pain, but Archemedes knew he should get home and take a few herbs to protect from infection. "What herb should I take to stave off blood poisoning?" He tested him as he headed back to his apartment.

Herbs. They were Jordy's weakness, and something Archemedes was probably well aware of. Chewing on the inside of his lower lip, the boy furrowed his brow as he turned to follow Archemedes back to his apartment. It was definitely something that he was going to have to work on.

"Um - Burdock, perhaps?" he asked timidly, and it was obvious that he was unsure of the answer as he hesitated with it a bit.

Archemedes smiled. For some reason he kind of liked seeing Jordy looking perplexed and uncertain. "Burdock would work, yes. Dandelion also and I happen to have some dried flowers for tea. Black radish will help protect the liver as well, though I don't relish it for the flavor it will add." He wrinkled his nose at the idea, but knew it was a necessary evil.

"I was never fond of herbology either. I was much more interested in wand work when I was younger. Casting spells at people rather than worrying about the subtler arts."

Jordy nodded his head a little in agreement with Archemedes words, while taking care to file the others away for future reference. It was relieving to hear that he wasn't the only one who wasn't a fan of herbology.

"I know it's something we need to learn, but my head is focused on more physical things I guess - I like to do more hands on things," he said with a little shrug.

"One would think that growing things would be the most physical thing you can do. But I understand what you mean. It's all memorization. Fortunately herbology isn't a major part of auror work. Hell, maybe that's why I really chose the profession."

The walk wasn't far and Archemedes was a little disappointed that their excursion hadn't lasted very long before disaster had struck. He made himself busy with the tea, brewing it up almost clumsily. He was terrible at potions and even worse at tea. "So how were the papers? Really terrible? That class isn't my best."

Jordy went to have a seat and he smiled as Pox came over to make herself comfortable on his lap once more. He pet the creature and let his attention flicker over to Archemedes.

"They weren't that bad, actually," he said honestly. "Most did pretty decently. I think you're a great teacher," he smiled.

Archemedes lifted a long, narrow finger and tutted. "Now, don't think that flattery will get you any kind of leniency on the final exams. I'll help you practice but that only means that I will be expecting that much more out of you." His words seemed so serious, but there was a lilting sense of kidding to his tone.

When he was done with the tea, he took a drink and wrinkled his nose. "Ugh, it tastes of bile."

"I don't blame you, I'd expect the same if the roles were reversed," Jordy said honestly as he sat there and watched Archemedes take a sip of his tea. Arching a brow, he smiled faintly. "Did you try putting some cinnamon in it? Sometimes that helps me when I don't like the taste of something," he offered.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Would you really?" Archemedes asked, bemused. "You are so very honest and hardworking. "If I told any other kid that, they'd be whining about how unfair that was." He called Jordy a kid because that's how he saw him, but it sounded a little disrespectful and he felt bad about it now that the word was out.

Looking down into his teacup, he tilted his head to the side to consider his suggestion. Getting up, he went to the kitchen and found some cinnamon. Pouring a bit in he retasted the tea and gave a nod. "Ah, yes. Much better."
