Kassi hated gym. Hated it with a passion, even more now that they were very near the end of the school year and it was hot outside. Heat didn't go well for a girl with a largely Atlantean physiology nor did it go well with those damn socks. The socks were the bane of her existence and so Kassi tried to time it just so that when she went in to dress out for gym she could be alone, allowing her to free her wings for a moment before stuffing back in their little elastic prisons.

She had just slipped off her shoes and sat down thinking she was alone when she heard a noise.

	It's a frustrated little whimper from another corner, where Anne Fields, the only 'out' mutant in the sophomore class, is finishing changing. There's dirt on her clothes. (Reply to this)(Thread)

	She got up and moved a bit towards the corner. "Anne? You okay?" It still messed with Kassi that Anne was a mutant. One day she'd been pink and human, the next green and scaly. Though it was a pretty shade of green. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Kassi frowned. "Are you kidding me?" She tried to think of which girls she had seen leaving the locker rooms and it didn't really surprise her. But it did make her sad. "Oh man, Anne, I'm sorry. "Someone put a dead lizard in your purse?" Kassi looked horrified and in truth she was. Not six weeks ago Anne had been a fairly ordinary, decently-liked girl. Now this bullshit?

"Anne, that's...that's just not okay."

Of course it wasn't okay. But what could she really do about it? Suddenly, she looked down at her feet. And had an idea.

"This shit isn't going to stand," she said "You aren't the only mutant in this school. And no one has the right to treat you like that." Sitting down on the bench, Kassi pulled off her socks.

There's a bit of cultural animosity towards me as a result so my father wants me to, at least, finish my education on the surface. "But you're okay now...right?" Ben asks, reaching out to take her hand, surreptitiously checking Kassi's head. He's glad he wasn't there to seek the jerk that hurt her, or Ben might have broken his face and few other body parts.

"So...what all can you do, being part-Atlantean? Can you really breathe underwater as long as you want? Do you have stay hydrated or can you stay on land indefinitely? Do your wings help you swim?" Ben asks, suddenly very interested in his girlfriend's abilities.

"I still have headaches, but both the Atlantean physicians and the neurologist my mom insisted I see when I got back say that is normal and will go away in time. I may always struggle with a few words here and there, but I should be fine." Kassi squeezes Ben's hand, the concern tracing over his face telling her that she shouldn't tell him that it was her father who accidentally hurt her.

When he asks about her Atlanteanness, she lights up.

"I can totally breathe underwater. It's just like breathing air for me. I don't have gills per se, but I suspect my lungs are built differently. Never tried to find out. I can tolerate the extreme undersea pressures and temperatures, too. It's really a lot like being part fish. My dad used to call me his little mermaid. I totally liked that.

"Um. I do need to hydrate. I get weak when I'm not hydrated and just drinking water won't do it--though it doesn't hurt. I take an actual bath every day, and three times a week I go for a dip in the ocean. The wings don't affect the swimming but they let me fly. I suck at landings."

She pauses.

"Oh and I can pick up a minivan like it were a sack of potatoes. I do not make a habit of this, but it was useful this one time when I tore up a Doombot."

It's always weird to know that your girlfriend can bench press ten of you, literally, but Ben is still curious about all of this. He's never met a real Atlantean before and he thinks this would make a great story, if he were a reporter.

"That's pretty awesome." he says, nodding as he thinks of what else he can ask her.

"Okay, I need to see this in action. Let's arm-wrestle." Ben suggests, shrugging off his coat.
